Woolf is so much more than Elizabeth Taylor - looking forward to re-reading Mrs Dalloway - been a long time. Right now doing some Booker wins, “the Bee Sting” - and others - no interest in Lady Chatterley’s Lover -Im of the age that feels - if you want sex, (and I had a wonderful marriage) go in the bedroom and close the door, I don’😅t need to watch you, so a book like Chatterley is the bedroom door open, Im not interested, too many wonderful books I havent gotten to yet, - redoing a lot of the classics 😊

Woolf's techniques that you describe are referred to as time and space montage: stopping time and moving in space or stopping space and moving in time. When Mrs. Dalloway is out that first morning, everyone is looking at the plane flying overhead, which is what allows Woolf to shift to different characters having the same observational experience. While Katherine Mansfield was the first to use them, Woolf perfected these techniques, I think, more than any other writer of the period.

I totally loved your descriptions of Boulder. I lived on Mapleton Ave for three very special years. We spent so much time in those beautiful mountains although I was always afraid of the wildlife on hikes. I worked at The Dairy Center for the Arts. At the time, The Naropa Center offered some classes in our facility and so I met their staff and learned a lot about their organization and history. Anne Waldman is incredible. Is the Beat Bookstore still on East Pearl St? Sounds like you had a great time out there. Presently, I'm reading "The Slip" by Prudence Peiffer about Coenties Slip at the southern tip of Manhattan, where several important artists had lofts between 1956 and 1967 (E Kelly, J Rosenquist, J Youngerman, A Martin, R Indiana, etc.) I'm totally digging it but I really love the setting, subject matter and NF genre. marjorieapple.substack.com

Thank you for the shout out! I enjoyed Lolly Willowes so much, and I wouldn't have picked it up without your recommendation. What a great list--I can second the McCullers and Kincaid recommendations, and the Hayes, West and Nelson are all going on the TBR.

It’s my pleasure! Oh you’ve read the McCullers? I really need to dip into it. Lolly Willowes was such a gem when I read it…how it unfolds.

@@thelefthandedreader6632 Yes, I first read it when I was 11 or 12 (probably too young--I got it for Christmas), and then several times through my teens. I just recently read it again a few years ago. It's beautiful but quite sad.

Love your lists. I've never heard of the first two, sound interesting! Have read all the others except Happening & Aftermath, which I've been hoping to find soon from the book gods in my town :) I like the small quick books when I feel restless, like Woolgatherings by Patti Smith. My daughter is a yoga teacher, and I look forward to listening to your journey! Her fave book that they read in training, which she often rereads is: The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring yoga's ethical practice, by Deborah Adele if you haven't already read it!

Thank you so much! I love having the yoga book recommendations! That’s a good point about a small quick book feeding the reading bug when one feels restless. I do feel that way too. 🥰🥰

totally forgot it was shortie september! need to find a quick one to squeeze into the month. been meaning to do McCullers as it's been a while since i've read The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. had no idea Members At The Wedding was on the shorter side!

It caught my attention on my shelf because I recalled it had a younger main character. And thankfully, I’ve really enjoyed some fiction I’ve read over the last couple yrs with young female characters like OCaledonia. 🤓

Great recommendations, lots of intriguing things to add to my wishlist. Carson McCullers is the only one I’ve read, but it’s been a decade and I barely remember it now, I should reread her too.
