I was police for 10 years before I got fed up with it all and resigned in 2005. These types of confrontations with the public would have lasted 30 seconds before smartphones were common. Recording police in any form within the confines of public spaces (such as in public/street/towns/cities/police/fire stations (outside)) is a legal right to all citizens. Police have no power whatsoever to force you to cease any filming activity. When police use their power (in any form) then they are considered ON DUTY and thus the filming of police personnel IS legal.

Recording police in any form within the confines of public spaces (such as in public/street/towns/cities/police/fire stations (outside)) is a legal right to all citizens. Police have no power whatsoever to force you to cease any filming activity. When police use their power (in any form) then they are considered ON DUTY and thus the filming of police personnel IS legal.
