    Ive had an Eastman E1D for 7 months. Pickwd it up at a going out of bus sale for $390 _all solid wood. Blows sub $1200 Martins out of the water in my opinion. I have an E1 00 Ltd 12 fret on the way. Your review has increased my eager anticipation. Thank you.

    Thanks for inspiring me! I was lucky, my guitar dealer next door received the E20P and I was so delighted when I played it today. Now it‘s in my possession!! Wonderful piece.
    Keep on presenting us your TH-cam pieces. Thomas from Germany 🤗

    I just bought one and have no idea why you say it’s not a performance guitar. Mine is a wonderfully well made guitar. It plays beautifully and sounds amazing. It strums like a much larger guitar. I have several more expensive guitars and would put my E20P up against any of them. This will be one of my go to guitars when I start gigging again. I highly recommend buying one.

      Well you are correct of course! For my playing style in performance I'd feel "safer" with one of my dreads. So that was a personal statement. However, if we ever get back to having jams - -a group of five or six folk around a table, I'd probably choose it over my Waterloo! thanks for watching and I always welcome comments and queries.

    Nice review, Andy. Great looking guitar, and it sounds clear and well-balanced. FYI, Eastman's "OM" is a 000 b/c it has a shorter 24.9" scale (not a 25.5" like a typical OM).

    • @SillyMoustache

      Hi, Yes it is. 000/OM seems that there is an ongoing confusion between the two like there is beteeen dreadnought and jumbo. don't know why.

    Just thought I’d let you know how I got on, seeing Robert Plant in a small venue in my hometown of Colne, Lancashire. He didn’t play any Zep songs at all, probably feels like Rock n Roll is the preserve of the young? What we got, was really special! Doc Watson stuff and old folk songs he’d discovered. Said he went to Nashville and came back home as he didn’t look old enough lol. He stayed in a local inn, and gave the lady owner, whom we know £40 tip and said he’s not like your average “star”. I’m also going to see Gordon Giltrap in February, should be good for the guitar geeks lol.

    • @SillyMoustache

      He still get around our ol' Robert! He even had the great Darrell scott in his team at one time. Gordon Giltrap? alive? still? Must be older than Nicholas Parsons (whoops!) Just checked on GG - he's younger than me!! (by about four weeks!)

    I’ve got the E10P-SB and I love it. Just like you said, the action was high, but my luthier was able to fix that quickly. I also installed a K&K Pure Mini so I can play it live.
    It’s a nice little guitar.

    Damn you Andy; you've got my GAS gurgling away again! I've pretty much had it with dreads and jumbos (shoulder issues), and have been exploring the world of 'affordable' small bodies. I found the Faith Mercury Classic Burst worked well for getting a big sound from a small box and bought one. I have to say that Eastman is tempting...

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andy, great to hear from you again. I discovered the Faith Mercury some time ago, sweet little guitar, but the fretboard width far too narrow for me. You may know that I have long ago migrated from Martin to Collings as Martin have deserted their own pre-war designs for strange new designs that hold no interest for me. I've hardly played my dreads since March last year - no club, no gear, so for giving zoom lessons I've used my smaller guitars, and got an "itch" or a 00 and 0. hoping to find a Martin VS as Collings are too rich for me now. I got the E20-P in Ivor Mairants'closing down sale, and was delighted, and since bought a custom 00 from the Netherlands before Brexit hit us.
      They are superb instruments.

    Sounds wonderful, and I like your playing. On the basis of this video, I bought one yesterday on eBay. The seller offered a free set-up to fit my playing style, so I also had him install a K&K Sound Pure Mini pickup to the bridge plate, as he had the strings off anyway and has installed many of them. Thanks.

    I feel, well, silly referring to you as Silly Moustache, but there they you are. I bought an E20P back in October from infamous Rudy's Music in NYC (Rudy himself recommended it while we were having a pint waiting for Mark Knopfler to go on at the Beacon Theater last August). At any rate, your review is spot on, accurate and very objective. Well done. I love the guitar, especially for the price ($1,400.00 USD; was looking at vintage-design parlors from Waterloo, Collings, Santa Cruz, etc., costing far more $ than I have). I bought it primarily for fingerstyle and it excels at that task. It even -- as you pointed out -- sounds quite acceptable when picked, which I occasionally do as well. My biggest complaint is buzzing barre chords from about the 4th fret up. I have had a setup done and it improved slightly, but still not where I want it. I can form clean barre chords on my other guitars as I have been playing for a few years. How does your E20P perform in the context of barres? Any thoughts?

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Clark, honestly, I don't do barres much, and when do it's mostly the "thumb over" style. Mine seems fairly good action wise, I did have my tech take it down a little but I usually go for about .095" bass and .080" treble. BTW - most call me "Ol' Andy"

  • @andybowen1249

    I’m told that the care and attention, that goes into Eastman guitars, is way more, than a standard Taylor or Martin guitar? If that’s the case, then we shouldn’t really be pleasantly surprised at finding that, these Chinese made guitars, sound really good?
    Love how you pick out a tune, would love to have the speed on those hammer ons and pull offs and the timing. You make it look so easy, as if anyone could do it lol.

      Thanks Andy. I cant speak of the in factory work in Eastman vs Martin, but I have seen the workmanship on Eastman archtops, and a couple of guys that have turned up to play at my club, and been impressed at their Eastmans. So, I took the rsk (I had a week or so to accept/reject. It is staying with me - probably in my lounge.

    I bought a second hand one online. Low price, so I took the chance. It has taken me about a year to get used to it (I have always played 14 fretters). Now I love it. It is not for all styles though. Strumming on it feels wrong in my opinion. Blues, Ragtime, certain delicate fingerstyle playing. I also play Flamenco. This guitar is better than my 14 fretters for some of those (nylon string) techniques.

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, no it really isn't a rhythm guitar is it? Many will say it hasn't got enough bass et., but this was not the intention when this design was developed back in 1895 (I think) Martin went for balance across the strings, and people didn't have such an obsession with dreadnought style bass.

    Hi! I have had my E20P since 2103 and always had a problem with the frets as they felt like speedbumps. Tried crowning to no positive effect and after 6 years I got new frets (Stewmac Mediums) and wow what difference in play ability and perhaps the sound ( I always like the sound). So this one is my couch guitar and frankly competes very well with my J40, D18Retro, HD35 and my 1975 D28. I now find how much I like the neck and width etc on the E20P and the short scale etc I now want a mahogany Eastman parlor or perhaps the OM or 00. So my question to you is if your tried the E10Parlor with mahogany or the 00 etc and your thoughts on them. Thanks for this video and all you do. Cheers!

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi EL, sorry to hear about your fret issue. I tend to prefer highish frets, ad rarely like them dressed down. I've had no such issues with my E20P. Whilst I have more hog gutars than rosewood currently, I definitely wanted rosewood for my smallest guitar. (and my 00 and 000 - not Eastmans) looking for the bass and treble complexity rather than the brute power of hog. I have not tried an Eastman 00 which was what I initial wanted to buy until my wife reminded me that she spent all she had to have my current 00 built back in '98.
      I actually believe that the 00 style is "special" in some way.
      Hope that answers your question.

Wondering if you have any thoughts on this. I go back and forth if I should as I already have other guitars etc. This is the one I am currently looking at. It's almost time to celebrate your E20 P's third birthday. Sadly, Eastman has yet to build your dream 000 or dreadnought 12 fret guitars. If you have money to burn, there is always; Martin, Collings, Santa Cruz, Froggy Bottom, etc.
    What brought me back to this review, I found a used E20OO selling for $1,000 (US). However, it is over 400 mile (644 kilometers) round trip to get it. At half that distance there is an E10P for $1050 asking. Still a bit distant. I do love the sound of mahogany in a dreadnought but not sure how it compares to rosewood in a parlor size. In a few weeks we're visiting my daughter, who lives not far from that E10P, so just maybe...
    I realize you prefer 12 fret guitars but if you get a chance to pick up a PCH series guitar, you should give one a strum just for curiosity's sake. I picked up a PCH3-GACE for a beach guitar. Although it has laminate sides and back, in a blindfold test, I'm willing to bet most guitar players would say it is solid wood.

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Patrick, you are keeping and old Englishman from his bed! I am committed to Collings, and have three 12 fret dreads, and also my 0002h. I have to say that I still enjoy my two Eastmans. Thanks for reminding me of my E20-P's Birthday" but I did give it a clean, polish and new set of strings yesterday. I can't speak of the E10-P but I'd have confidence in either. Can you not get either one shipped? Thanks for watching my videos - I've had some difficulties making videos lately and of course we're all having issues with TH-cam and their attack on ad blocker users.

      @@SillyMoustache And just as you start to nod off, another response. I'm currently designing a title page for my very first TH-cam video, just as TH-cam has started playing games with their program. I'm guessing I'll go live in about two weeks. From private sellers, I need to try before I buy. I bought an Eastman DT30-GACE (double top) from the East coast, and the frets needed replacing. Not due to wear but because they were so short that the outer strings would slip off. Instead of extending over the maple binding the frets stopped at the edge of the ebony. With new frets it is now one of my favorites, so worth the expense but still, frustrating. It's getting dark here and if I guess correctly, a seven hour difference so, nighty night.

    Silly, looking up your E20P, it has a (huge) string spacing at the saddle of 2 3/8". My guitar has 2 5/32". So the E20P has 0.22" more spacing - which seems like a lot. Do you notice it? Do you prefer large string spacing at the saddle? The reason I'm asking: I often pick the wrong string (frustrating). I'm wondering if that is just because I'm not that experienced (yet) or is it because 2 5/32 is really for strumming - and I'm flatpicking it. Hmm. Maybe I should try something larger.

    I’m only just getting to grips with how quality guitars are finished. I believe the nitrocellulose finish is an expensive process. Interesting thing re Julian Lange and his signature Collins model guitar, in that he opted to have no nitrocellulose finish and go with the Waterloo style, which looks like a very thin Matt to my eye?
    I know signature guitars can be a bit gimmicky, but, after seeing Lange describe his guitar and foregoing all the flash stuff, you just know it must be a real, players instrument.

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andy, Nitro is pretty much the standard finish - that most makers use across th/e price range. You might be thinking of the thinner lacquer finish that is reputed to allow the tonewoods to resonate more. I believe that Waterloos are also nitro finished, just not high glossed.

      Thanks, I think. I'm too old for those picture things.

    Are you going to re-string your guitar with light gauge strings?

    • @SillyMoustache
      @SillyMoustache  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, all my guitars smaller than dreads wear light gauge - either D'addario EJ16s or Martin MA540.

      @@SillyMoustache I normally use extra light strings. It's time to give lights a try.

      @@rong648 I think that would be a good idea. I can't use lighter than lights and Eastman supply them with 12-53 anyway.

      @@SillyMoustache I haven't changed my strings yet but I did get a set of EJ16's.

      Silly Moustache ...sorry mate...here in Canada...one of our huge hockey heroes was / is the enigmatic Lanny Macdonald who sported a mustache just like yours...while looking like you...for his entire 20 odd year career with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Calgary Flames. My brother had a privilege to play with him in Toronto for a spell....he is a class act and would now be about your age...honestly the image is really almost a dead ringer....apologies for the lack of context...I literally just blurted it out....cheers.

    To my surprise that was one of the most disappointing guitars i ever played, especially considering the price, if it was something in the sigma/epiphone league it might be ok.
    Packed it for return after a few minutes.

      Didn't know Sigma or Epiphone do an "0" design guitar. What guitars are you comparing it to?
