I would like to know how the team made the original decision on what size the expansion card system was going to be, what were the options and how it landed on this size. Seeing as that is what ultimately caused the size constraints, creating the design difficulties and delay on the SD card expansion module. Looking forward to more vids from you! Can't wait to receive my AMD Framework 13 :D
I'm pretty sure the width of the expansion card makes it too narrow for two USB A ports, which would otherwise be a pretty handy card.
@@phtown I totally agree. It would be pretty nice to have 2 USB A ports on one card, but I think if it was that wide, some smaller things that you wouldn't have multiple of (like the 3.5mm sound card) would be kind of weird with all that extra space.
@@natec1I dunno, I'm sure some people would appreciate a surround DAC. Though it'd be kinda weird on a laptop.
Edit: The other alternative would be to combine the 3.5mm jack with a USB-C port or have separated headphone/microphone jacks or something.
@@natec1 could have the form factor allow for a smaller card, two of which can fit in an adapter the size of a normal card, attaching with pogo pins to save space
you could add another generic useful port, like a USB-A or USB-C port on the side@@natec1
WOW im blown away this is what im talking about! this single video is has taken me from skeptical to interested
This is a fantastic idea! It is mind-blowing and encouraging to see how Framework companies are truly leading the way towards repairable, durable, modular and environmentally friendly consumer devices.
As soon as my current laptop can't take it anymore, it's clear to me that I'm getting a Framework 13" - same with my iPhone 12, which I'll replace with a Fairphone 5.
Love this kind of transparency into the engineering process. More please!
@framework A thing most videos fail to do is include links to any websites / forums referenced in the video in the description section. Moving forwards in the series, if you show a screenshot of a website (especially a framework forum page!), would you mind including a link to it in the video description section? This greatly helps with transparency and makes it easier for us to learn too. Thanks.
I am a big fan of your efforts to become even more transparent and consumer friendly!
The pressure you put on the industry as a whole is much needed and I love to whitness true innovation with all its trouble and tribulation.
Loving the Framework Laptop’s modular design - 16 parts in a 13-inch form is seriously impressive! Eco-friendly, cost-effective, and a tinkerer’s dream. The community support is super solid as well!
I really like how much Framework talks about their design process and the manufacturing partners they work with. I really like that.
If you do a proper DB-9 serial port, datacenter techs will love you forever and ever.
I absolutely love the consistent level of transparency with this company, planning to grab myself a framework this holiday season! if this company continues to see success, it may be the last laptop I'll ever have buy.
I cant imagine how much time and effort goes into designing and manufacturing these products. The existence of the GPU module for the 16 inch framework laptops is something we dreamt of for years, but just sounded impossible.
Still looking forward to the full size SD card, big respect for all the work!
this is best series of videos in the history of videos that explain how to start computer laptop business. gonna watch everything. thanks a zillion time. You are greatest presenter ever.
as a small consumer electronics manufacturer myself, this very exciting to see the big guys share their experience on what is a very inaccessible and confusing filled for anyone without a huge team and funding
The painful moment you realized you need something nobody makes. very relatable, great work!
It's going to be a long up-hill battle but I hope you guys make it
like in general, as a company and as a trend for electronics as a whole
Right to repair is just getting started, nice work guys ;)
Transparency all the way! Love to see it.
I will definitely buy an SD-Card-Extension!
Next Thing I would like to see is an 4 to 8 Slot Extension-Card-Dock.
You all do an great job and I really love my Framework Laptop!
I'm a customer and huge fan of the company and what it's doing. Love the idea of this series and I'll be following eagerly!
This is so great to see the transparency of what it actually takes, Framework continues to be a brand like no other.
My biggest gripe with Framework expansion card system is how restrictive it is. Having 4 bays to play with (realistically 3 or 2) It's a hard to chose between a headphone jack or a lone USB port / Ethernet. It would be great to see some combo modules. Like 3.5mm jack + USB A/C or Ethernet + USB-C.
Even if they came at a premium, I'd still love to see them come to market
Just wanted anyone reading your comment to know that you don't *need* to use an expansion slot to get an audio jack, there is already one built in separate from the expansion slots. That being said I've also wanted dual cards, especially a dual USB-C card since I got mine from pre-order.
I want combo ports as much as the next guy, but I never found the expansion bays to be very restrictive without them. I usually go with two USB-C and two USB-A, one of each on either side. I have Ethernet and HDMI cards in my backpack, both of which I have only needed to use a handful of times when out and about in over a year of university. You also have to keep in mind that virtually all laptops comparable to the Framework 13 have no video output without a USB-C dock or dongle.
They fixed this issue with Framework 16. You get 6 in total, and everything is swappable.
@@RemziCavdar that's not a fix. It's a workaround. One port per slot is still really limiting
Awesome idea!
I would love to follow the!
About the SD Expansion card:
I hope it will also support SD Express, so it can read the new upcoming generation of SD cards
I love the communication! This and many other reasons are why I'm glad to have a Framework. Good luck on the card!
Awesome video! I'd love to know the juicy details of the design and manufacturing process for the connector itself; designing one from scratch sounds both fascinating and difficult!
Awesome, as a hobbyist photographer, one of the worst parts of my workflow was having to use a USB card reader. It was just unreliable enough to put me off exporting my work until the SD card was filled to the brim, rather at the end of each shoot.
so excited for this, i am needing a full sided one
Amazing idea for the video series!! Thank you for this, Framework team!
So excited to get an exclusive look behind the scenes, and it's so cool to see another face from the Framework team! This is such a fun first video, and I can't wait to see more about what Hyelim learns about this process!
Yup I’m buying a frame work.
ive got to say this is really well produced i dont know why but i was was half expecting something somewhat amateurish bit this is on par or even better than some full time youtube creators
They COULD have gotten Linus to give them pointers, but also they could have a really good videomaker in house
@@Anankin12if they asked Linus it would have blown up too far in scope. This sort of thing is better in-house.
clearly an inlfuencer. Though she kinda makes a mistake. Building a latop is hard... i guess she meant to say; designing and producing a laptop
simple google search. She is/was a ceramic and korean designer, if that is something. has her own website the soul search. No offense to her, she is very energetic, will do much better job done a techy who is camera shy
@@RomboutVersluijs "building" is a close enough stand in for "designing and producing" in this context. Don't be a diva.
yes! bringing full sized sd cards back
wow i am so here for this series. Framework just keeps getting better and better in every way! Hope these continue. Hyelim is great, and has a very listenable to voice! Hope this keeps up for all kinds of products in the future, and good luck on the expansion card process! Thanks for bringing us along.
Thanks FW Team. following
As for consumers - I think we should expect the next generation of expansion cards to be wider to accommodate the myriad of current requests that cannot fit in the existing footprint. Dual USBA for example.
Backwards compatibility with all released expansion cards would be easy, just create a plastic housing matched to that new, wider dimension(s) where older cards can slot into.
Not just wider, also higher. That way an ethernet jack will actually fit. But I doubt we will see a big EC form factor any time soon.
this is a fantastic video, really well done and I love the presentation. Framework is doing a great job communicating to its customers. Keep it up!
Framework 16 only have one extra expansion port when you count in headphone jack takes one slot. Is it possible to combine a USB-C for charging and data (Thunderbolt 4/USB4, Displayport... Everything.) and the headphone jack. This will free up one slot.
I've got another idea. Wireless mice come with tiny usb type-A dongles, and i wish that there exists an expansion card that can enclose the dongle flush within the chassis of the laptop, so the dongle doesn't protrude out of the laptop like the current type-A expansion card.
Wait till you find out about this thing called Bluetooth lol,
@@Gatorz_GamingYeah, but gaming laptop radio dongles.
@@Gatorz_Gaming Bluetooth can be more hassle to connect to. Plugging in a dongle of a device is generally recognized by the computer in the exact same way as a wired device because the dongle introduces itself a mouse (instead of a connection device) and the dongle handles the connection part.
With bluetooth, the connection part is handled by the operating system (if the device has bluetooth support in the first place). That often comes with pairing issues, devices connecting to the wrong device (because it's paired to multiple devices) and more. Bluetooth connections also generally have more latency, which can become very noticeably. All in all, the experience itself with bluetooth is often worse and inconsistent. With a dongle, it works consistently and is plug-and-play.
Bluetooth has it's obvious advantage as well of course. It's a widely supported standard and is used on many devices that don't have (m)any USB ports. You're also not tied to a dongle, so when you loose that dongle you can still use it. Personally, when I buy wireless peripherals I try to look for a device that supports both: I use the dongle most off the time, but when I loose the dongle or I forget to take it with me, I can fall back on bluetooth.
@@jarnobotit's because the Bluetooth stack on Windows is a piece of sh*t. I've heard that is not the case with GNU/Linux, but I haven't tested myself (I don't have Bluetooth devices).
@@LinuxIsNotAnOperatingSystem I know, but you'll always keep having certain issues or even just simple inconveniences with Bluetooth.
I actually bought a Bluetooth dongle for my (Linux) PC very recently and so far it worked very well. That is compared to my experiences with Bluetooth + Windows (which has been 5+ years ago tbh). But even on Linux you'll keep having issues & inconveniences with Bluetooth, although it's far less. A plug-and-play dedicated dongle is just more straight forward and easy to me.
This should be the only way to do marketing.
Wow. Don't think most companies can do it.
But wish more did.
I love that companies are finally figuring out building in public is great publicity!
Some day, I'd love to see an expansion card dock a la the Lexar Workflow dock. Would be great to have the ability to use n-number of expansion cards through one TB/USB4 expansion port.
At worst it can stick out like the ethernet, lol.
At times I wonder if it would have been better to have a bit wider expansion bays so there could be space for 2 ports instead of 1 in the expansion. You don't always need the full speed of the thunderbolt 3/USB 4 so you could fairly easily have 2x USB A 2.0 for just plug in things that don't need speed like mouse and keyboard. Maybe also easier to have space for small M.2 so one can swap in new M.2 SSD in the expansion pay instead of having to buy a whole new expansion bay.
I really want my next laptop to be a Framework. I hope you guys keep making awesome stuff!!
I love this company and everyone in it so much!
Thank you for doing the right things and improving the consumer electronics industry!
Can't wait for the next episode of this series. You guys are showing the whole industry how to market and make a product the right way.
they should enter the handheld PC business
This series seems like it could be awesome!
Framework’s expansion cards are my favorite adapters to hook up to a Mac, because I don’t need to carry them as dongles.
its good to see that frame work is not sending out the laptops before testing them fully: In the past computers and laptops were sold with some faults and when the customer found them and reported the fault some companies did not do anything about for years: Going back in time when i brought an acorn model B computer the os. rom was 0.1 with a lot of errors in the eprom and if you wanted to have lastest version which was 1.2 os system rom: you had to pay for it overwise they would not give it to you: I know you will find faults when the frist batch goes out some people might find a few problems but is always the case: Anyway i ordered the 16" version in the second batch: only 2 hours after the email was sent out: I noticed on you tube there was a very slight fault with a 3v backup battery not doing something right on cmos and the person could not believe how easy it was to the upgrade mod which you sent him with instructions in how to fix the fault: All done in 30 minutes also he did not read how to do right:
Great to hear! Thanks! It will definitely be on my purchase list (so long as the development cost doesn't inflate the price unreasonably).
Can't wait to see the new developments! I would like to ask how the size of the expansion slots came to pass since things like ethernet and the SD card seem to have trouble fitting inside the constraints. Were these not planned when the system was first designed?
Very excited for this, when my current device fails, I will be looking to pick up a framework device. I'm hope this modular and repairable design takes off and I am fully behind it!
very cool that it's finally being done, but that we also get accountability in the form of these videos, while learning something along the way!
Thank you for being such a great example for other companies
I think it would be interesting to see an “empty” expansion slot. Like just an empty housing, but includes a usb c connector and an open front. That way the community can tinker much more easily with custom expansion cards.
Wonderful idea for a series! I'm curious what the criteria is for whether something becomes a prototype revision. What never makes it past being a bullet point on a white board vs what gets sketched out vs what gets Frankenstein'd into a prototype?
If you put her whole upper body in the image, then the reading from the teleprompter become far less obvious (y) Btw it is amazing how small the framework team is and what they are bringing to the table.
excited to get a look behind the curtain!
Here is hoping for a dual-USB-A port for peripherals in the future!
Go ahead 👏🏻 The world needs you 💟
Love the video! It's always great to see more transparency in consumer electronics :)
This is going to be fantastically interesting, can't wait for more!
Really looking forward to the series, feel like it's the perfect answer to the many requests.
I Like the concept of the Video and the whole process it is about seems to be very interesting and the Host is doing a great Job.
Love this kind of videos. From a new person perspective. More please!!
Thanks for taking us with you!
I think that being open about development processes has so many positive sides!
Switching from my MacBook M1 to the Framework AMD will be some sort of compromise, but I can not longer make Advertisement for Apple and stand for their cause. And I think Fedora is so much more beautiful and simple than MacOS :)
I would love to see how the process of getting a tech product idea all the way to production is done, and I'm looking forward to this series. 😄
Can't wait for that first batch of the 16s to ship...
Cant wait to buy 16+ inch framework
I had love and hate relationship with Lenovo as laptop provider (main tool for my passion, craft and job) now a company I can fully commit and say you are the one....
Kind of a different Seoul Search vlog style but I like it
Absolutely love this!! Hope we can see some interviews with the engineers/a bit of a behind the scenes in the background alongside your takeaways :)
if the cards were being designed at the same time as the original laptop, why wasn't the form factor just made a few mm wider??
Hi Framework, I currently use UHS-ii cards, and do very much hope you will support the higher speeds available with them!
sdexpress could be nice eventually, but there arent any cameras with them yet :/
Please let us know early on if we should get our hopes up for higher speeds with this adapter!
I cherish your new video! I am looking forward to exploring the process of the expansion card creation. Besides I enjoy your video style, Hyelim Choi. I assume that you are as eager to learn more about the amazing tech during the video process as we are as a community.
So versatile, Love it!
This is a really really nice idea. I really hope after this onse series we get to see how the laptop was made as well!
I'm excited for when I need a new laptop so I can grab a Framework!
It would be great, if you could make it an Full Size SD / Micro SD Combo Extension.
(Maybe just wired in parallel, with just one port usable at a a time.)
(And the same for USB-C / A wired in parallel, maybe with the ports very close together so no one accidentally uses both ports at the same time.)
I am trying to convince my department to buy Framework laptops for the next refresh.... for our internal IT dept lol. We love the philosophy and design. But we have ONE big thing we all love...
... we love 2-in-1 designs. Gotta have that touch screen for lots of tedious check boxes and demonstrations. If there was, perhaps... some kind of ... foldable hinge add-on and a screen half that had a digitizer... my god. you would have it all. there would be no downside to this wonderful machine.
and if it served us well, I would be delighted to try and push that product onto our much larger base of users. 2 in 1's are the only thing keeping users in our org actually using windows machines instead of macbooks, unfortunately, so that feature's a huge deal to people on the precipice of choosing an unrepairable, touchscreenless, IO-lacking macbook.
High quality audio outputs / inputs (1/4 connectors?) would be great for DJ's and musicians!
Great video! Keep these coming, what a way to "light the fire" of all of us out here... most well done, indeed.
Will we ever see dual IO cards (for instance a dual 3.5 card for mics and audio) also USB A slot colors? Tbh that’s probably expensive and not worth it but worth a shot
Why not combine multiple functions into one card? Why only 1 USB-C, why not 2, maybe 1 mini hdmi and 1 usb in one card slot? What about a docking station? I would rather wants cords out the back than from the sides.
Great Video! Love content like this.
I'd like to know how the material for the metal fingers that connect to the pads on the SD card is chosen, and what temper properties were applied to keep it "springy".
I would have loved to see a hub option: use one or two USB-C ports, and get a full mini-hub or docking station along one side of the laptop
This series is a great idea!
a full size SD card reader would be very usefull!
Make one with two USB A ports; take out some of the plastic at the edge if you have to.
looking forward to OLED display someday
So cool behind the scenes!
Can you folks look into building a Framework Surface Pro competitor? I'd love to support such a transparent and right-to-repair supportive organization, but I simply can't rely on ANY mono form-factor PC having experienced the Surface Pro line.
This should be an interesting series. Thanks!
Really well-made video! Looking forward to following along.
Good deal! I use both SD and microSD often, so this would be helpful to have my SD card adapter for my microSD cards, as well as the SD cards I use in my camera (or something like that. Too many SD adapters!)
Personally, that particular Thunderbolt HUB with SD Card reader, can handle over 2TB SD Card with very high read/write speed.
If it's just a bit too wide can it live at the very top? Like an open face sandwich where the missing top bun is the SD card. So it's above the alignment slot instead of centered.
This is such a great idea for a series!
framework 16": would be nice a module with oculink port(s) taking advantage of pcie lanes of the gpu expansion Bay System....or a expansion Bay System for a full desktop pcie riser card slot (/slots with bifurcation tables would be even more than amazing) or additional m.2 expansion Bay System.
or also a second battery bay.
Like I would buy them all.
ps you are doing an amazing job! love your modular and upgradability approach. "Save us" and save the market from short use and not reparable products!
Respect the product manager! Haha
you know what would be cool, a “pro” version of the computer, one with 8 expansion slots, for ALL THE MODULARITY!!!
You could even make a pair of the expansion slots have a detachable (with a scredriver) section between them. Leave the center section in for two normal expansion slots. Take it out for a single triple wide slot.
Amazing video production quality!
