We have friends who did this same thing, although they are pulling it with their Gladiator. We bought a class C motorhome last year to pull our Jeep. We have taken a ton of trips with it already to hit off-road trails. Maybe we'll see you on the trails someday.
Awesome camper! What brand is the trailer? How did you get to custom order it? The ones I'm looking at don't seem to be as high quality as yours. I really want one like yours but I can't seem to find one.
Guys that's awesome! I am going to do that as well, currently researching which trailer company to use, what trailer company did you use for your customization? Chris
Nicely Done! How are you finding your Jeep is towing the trailer? Jeeps are not the greatest tow vehicles. What gearing do you have in the Jeep? I have a 2021 Jeep Wrangler JL 2 door
Thank you so much for watching! I created the Rescue Wagon to be towed by my 2007 Jeep Wrangler 2dr 3.8 liter with 4:10 gears and 33 inch tires. Obviously, going up steep inclines in the mountains takes patience and a keen eye on your temperature gauge. Flat and gently rolling hills are no problem. One quick tip: We installed decorative grill inserts on the front grill. This vastly restricts air flow and will cause you jeep to run hotter than normal. Once I removed the inserts it was back to normal or just slightly above.
The air conditioner keeps it from fitting into a standard garage. It has held up well. I try to keep it clean, and I use a clay bar and ceramic on it every spring. Also, I haven't taken it on anything crazy. Thanks so much for watching!!!
It sounds like you were referring to butyl tape...I used a lot of that installing my solar rig and my side portal windows on our cargo trailer conversion.
Really! What type did you purchase? What type of solar system? We are getting ready to do another build and that sounds like a great option. Thanks so much!
Yes the roof is reinforced. Luckily this model only weighs 75 pounds. I definitely wanted to make sure it could handle being off road. Thanks so much for watching!
Note for self - 5x8 - thanks. Planning the details of mine, but it will be 5x10. Does your total cost include the discount for the trailer? What was that? $1400? I'm having one built of aluminum to cut down on weight. I'm towing with a Grand Caravan, weight limit is 3600#, but I want to keep it to under 3K. I think I'm going to be imitating the tire step and your awning.
Hey! Yes- the total cost did include the discount. The discount was $1144. Sounds awesome...you will love it! Let us know if you post any pictures or videos of your build, we would love to see it! Happy camping!
It is a standard full size bed length of 75 inches. It does cover into the area of the door when deployed. It hasn't been a big deal, although I wouldn't mind another foot or two. LOL. Thanks for watching!!!
Hello. What a great video. I just sold my camper van. I am planning to get started on a 5x10. To tow behind my Jeep TJ. Great suggestion on ordering the trailer with options. Where did you order from? I am just starting to contact dealers in Texas where I live. Maybe it is less expensive where you bought yours. Thanks and I hope to use many of your options. Also. Do you have a “shopping list” of your first build options? If so I would like to download. Please keep making the videos. They are the best on the internet. Thank you.
We don’t have a list, but southern trailer depot has options on their site. If you google the website or call Clay you can see all the options available. Thanks
What a great build. Thanks for sharing. Knowing that Jeeps do not have the best towing capabilities it looks like you found a great work around. Do you know the weight by chance? Just found you channel.
Since it is setup for a Jeep, how does it handle off road? Not rock crawling but forest service roads that can have ruts a water crossing. I have heard that spacers can be a problem.
It works great! We have not had any problems with the spacers. I used blue threadlock when I first put them on. I’ve got about 7000 miles with no issues.
This is a Lightning all aluminum trailer by Keystone. We purchased it in north east Georgia. If you go to the lightning website you can locate a dealer in your area. Thanks for watching!!!
Very nicely done. Looking for the same size trailer but with aluminum frame and seamless walls .. won’t need the air conditioner as I’m from Alberta but will be installing a propane Dickinson heater
is there a difference in the durability of the trailer with aluminum? I'm not quite sure what my trailer is made of but I know it's some type of metal and is quite strong. I took down most of the plywood to insulate it, never got help to finish it. Us women can't do everything regardless of what we think 🤣 but yes just wondering about the weight and if the material used is durable enough to hold it up especially during storms or windy situations like at the beach!
@@primordialgodis3290 aluminum is very strong and won’t rust . It’s lighter and therefore can be towed by smaller vehicles . It’s more costly by prob 25%
At the time we were just happy to get it small and light weight. I am eventually going to do one that is 6’3” on the inside before adding a ceiling. Thanks for watching!!!
Thanks! We really wanted something that had hard sides so we could easily stay anywhere- even a Walmart parking lot! It is also quicker and easier to pull in and out of places with minimal set up if we choose to not really get anything out. Yet we can open everything up and still get that breeze if we want to do that too.
Thanks so much! We ordered it from Southern Trailer Depot- Clay Rhode. The AC was an additional charge, but if they install it they run the wiring and put additional bracing in the roof.
The Jeep has a 5x5 bolt pattern, the trailer has a 4.5x5 pattern. I had to get spacers that converted 4.5x5 to 5x5. It was a good thing that I got the spacers, because my Jeep wheels were wider than the trailer factory wheels. This provided the offset I needed to keep the Jeep wheels from rubbing on the trailer. This is exactly why I don't understand why people pay $30,000 for those teardrop trailers. This is a much better idea then a lot of the overpriced new trailers. But I guess their is a ass for every seat.
@@befreebensondiy very nice job. An that was a very through breakdown. You have everything I could think of covered. That only comes from going out and using it. Which is another thing I see with these expensive trailers. Most it seems were designed by people that never went camping. I’ve been around motorhomes since the 70s, my parents owned a coachmen, pace arrow dealership. I’ve watched things change but floor plans always seem out of touch with what people really use. The biggest example is most trailers have a dinette yet a big always set up bed would be much more useful. They always put small beds when the first thing in a upgrade or remodel is a queen bed. Maybe it’s just my opinion!

Thanks so much for watching! I had a 6x12 that was only used as a cargo trailer and I could stand up. I’m 6’0”.
We have friends who did this same thing, although they are pulling it with their Gladiator. We bought a class C motorhome last year to pull our Jeep. We have taken a ton of trips with it already to hit off-road trails. Maybe we'll see you on the trails someday.
Yes! Happy adventures!
Really nice job. Well done.
Thank-you so much!!
My brother ordered two of his with checker board floors.
Love it! They remind me of a soda shop! Thanks for watching!
Nice work and great ideas!
Thank-you so much! It is a lot of fun!
Awesome camper! What brand is the trailer? How did you get to custom order it? The ones I'm looking at don't seem to be as high quality as yours. I really want one like yours but I can't seem to find one.
Rock Solid Cargo Trailer. We ordered it from Southern Trailer Depot in Douglas Georgia. Clay Rhode 912-253-0850. Thanks for watching!!!
Aaayyy! Pedro's!!!
We had a great time! Thanks for watching!
you clever people!!!!
Great job! I’m curious how many times two people can say “actually” in a 20 minute video?
Thanks! Apparently we say it a ton! 😂 Thanks for watching!
Did you have to change the fenders when you changed the wheel size?
No, I was happy that they still worked fine!!! Thanks so much for watching!!!
well done...
Thanks so much for watching! We really appreciate it!
Great job thanks for sharing = )
Thanks so much for watching!
Guys that's awesome! I am going to do that as well, currently researching which trailer company to use, what trailer company did you use for your customization? Chris
Rock Solid Trailers at Southern Trailer Depot in Douglas Georgia. Clay Rhode 912-253-0850. Thanks so much for watching!!!
Are you able to put this Into a standard garage? How well has the trailer stood up to overlanding and dirt roads?
The air conditioner keeps it from fitting into a standard garage. It has held up well. I try to keep it clean, and I use a clay bar and ceramic on it every spring. Also, I haven't taken it on anything crazy. Thanks so much for watching!!!
Awesome
Thank you much! It’s a lot of fun!
It sounds like you were referring to butyl tape...I used a lot of that installing my solar rig and my side portal windows on our cargo trailer conversion.
Yep! That would be the correct name...I could not remember that while I was filming. Thanks for adding that info!
In the old days we called that goo Dumdum. It was extensively used in the car industry. Where's the Sat Com system??
Thanks for watching... No SatCom system here.
Should of installed a mini split, mine was 500 bucks and will easily run on solar, and uoi can’t heat it running
Really! What type did you purchase? What type of solar system? We are getting ready to do another build and that sounds like a great option. Thanks so much!
If you went to the OBX I’m guessing you are east coasters. Can you tell me where you ordered the trailer from. Thanks
Yes- we are from Georgia. We ordered the trailer from Southern Trailer Depot- Clay Rhode- 912-253-0850.
Very nice work, hope you reinforced the roof if you slaped a 200 lbs AC unit on it and are going to go off road! 😬
Can you use the porta potty when the bed is fully set up?
No…you have to slide at least one side in.
Very nice rig.
Thanks for watching!
Could you please tell me the trailer brand you purchased to start the process?
Solid Rock Cargo Trailer purchased through Southern Trailer Depot- Clay Rhode 912-253-0580. Thanks for watching!
Whats the bed length and does it cover door when its deployed?
Thank you.
We ordered it from Southern Trailer Depot in Douglas Georgia. Clay Rhode ((912) 253-0850) was our salesman. Thanks so much for watching!!!
We don’t have a list, but southern trailer depot has options on their site. If you google the website or call Clay you can see all the options available. Thanks
How big is your bed? Is it a Full mattress? Great video 🙏
Thanks for watching. It is a full size mattress. It leaves about an inch and a half on each side of the bed between the walls.
I like the build! Do you have alink to that box you put the water heater in?
Thanks! Here is the link - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ELK93IK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
Hi where did you guys order your trailer from? I see it’s not easy to find a place that will install ac units and electrical
Southern Trailer Depot in Douglas, GA (ask for Clay Rhode)
Thank you!
What a great build. Thanks for sharing. Knowing that Jeeps do not have the best towing capabilities it looks like you found a great work around. Do you know the weight by chance?
Just found you channel.
Thanks so much! It's right at 1900 pounds fully loaded.
@@befreebensondiy Thanks you definitely have it dialed in
You did a beautiful job. Can you tell me where you sourched the wheel spacers?
Thanks for watching!
Tire Spacers- amzn.to/3eN2wtQ
Very impressive 👍
Thank-you!
How tall is the trailer to the roof?
What brand name cargo trailer is this ?
Where did you
Buy it ?
This is a Lightning all aluminum trailer by Keystone. We purchased it in north east Georgia. If you go to the lightning website you can locate a dealer in your area. Thanks for watching!!!
Where did u Order it from?
Southern Trailer Depot- Clay Rhode 912-253-0850
Who is the trailer manufactured by?
Rock Solid Cargo Trailer. I bought it from Clay Rhode 912-253-0850 with Southern Trailer Depot in Douglas Georgia. Thanks for watching!
Nice built!! I want to do my cargo conversion as well. What is your MPG towing that camper?
With the Jeep the MPG are about 13. Happy building and camping!
You should have optioned for the bigger AC unit 🤣
Manufactures are so hell bent on keeping things the same.
Cheers
We could operate like a portable freezer! 😂
Very nicely done. Looking for the same size trailer but with aluminum frame and seamless walls .. won’t need the air conditioner as I’m from Alberta but will be installing a propane Dickinson heater
Sounds great! Aluminum framing would be awesome and light weight. It's a lot of fun. We have really enjoy our camper!
is there a difference in the durability of the trailer with aluminum? I'm not quite sure what my trailer is made of but I know it's some type of metal and is quite strong. I took down most of the plywood to insulate it, never got help to finish it. Us women can't do everything regardless of what we think 🤣 but yes just wondering about the weight and if the material used is durable enough to hold it up especially during storms or windy situations like at the beach!
@@primordialgodis3290 aluminum is very strong and won’t rust . It’s lighter and therefore can be towed by smaller vehicles . It’s more costly by prob 25%
Aluminum is lighter, but very strong and will hold up in all weather. Good luck on getting yours complete. It is so much fun to travel with!
Very cool! Who built up and did the add ons for the original cargo trailer?
Nevermind, read thru the comments and found it. Not too far down the road from me. Very cool trailer. 😎
Thanks so much!
why didn't you add that extra foot in height so you could stand up?
At the time we were just happy to get it small and light weight. I am eventually going to do one that is 6’3” on the inside before adding a ceiling. Thanks for watching!!!
Just wondering if you considered a popup camper? And why you didn't go that route. This looks great!
Thanks! We really wanted something that had hard sides so we could easily stay anywhere- even a Walmart parking lot! It is also quicker and easier to pull in and out of places with minimal set up if we choose to not really get anything out. Yet we can open everything up and still get that breeze if we want to do that too.
Love your camper, where did you order it from? Did you mean the ac/heater cost more or or was it included into the base price?
Thanks so much! We ordered it from Southern Trailer Depot- Clay Rhode. The AC was an additional charge, but if they install it they run the wiring and put additional bracing in the roof.
Thanks for your response 👍
Great video tour! Who make the trailer and who did you purchase through? We are jeepers as well and this beats the manufactured by about 30K.
Thanks so much! It is a Rock Solid Cargo Trailer. We bought it through Southern Trailer Depot- Clay Rhode. Happy jeeping!!

Where did that solar light come from?
We purchased one from Harbor Freight and two from Home Depot. They also have them on Amazon- amzn.to/3bIQIXZ. Hope that helps!
Such a nice minimal build! How much did it weigh when finished?
Fully loaded with food and all we are at approximately 1900 pounds. Thanks for watching!!!
What brand is the trailer?
Rock Solid Cargo. I purchased it from Southern Trailer Depot (Clay Rhode 912-253-0850) in Douglas, Georgia. Thanks so much for watching!!!
Were your Jeep wheels on the camper a direct fit. I tried to put Jeep wheels on our 6x10 and they wouldn’t fit over the hub.
Lots!
Those solor light dont lard very long ...
We have had good luck with ours. They usually last through the night. We will see how it goes after we have had them for some time. Thanks for watching!
poplar isn't hard. nice build!
Yes, it is considered a hardwood, it's used in the furniture industry a lot.
Thanks so much Richard! The poplar is smoother and nicer than the pine thats available. Oak is just way too expensive.
Poplar is weird! Is it a soft hardwood, or a hard softwood? It is very strong for its weight/density, is very clear and free of knots, takes finishes well, and is usually quite cheap.
Oh yes, a hair dryer and a curling iron, ...the essentials.
Exactly!!! LOL. Thanks so much for watching!!!
Wr did you get the trailer ...??? Thanks

This is exactly why I don't understand why people pay $30,000 for those teardrop trailers.
This is a much better idea then a lot of the overpriced new trailers. But I guess their is a ass for every seat.
That's why we went this route. Much more cost effective and customized to our needs.
My brother has a similar cargo trailer. 😂😂
Love it!
