It’s been many years since I last visited Carlsbad Caverns. We were close a couple of weeks ago. We stayed in nearby Whites City before we climbed Guadalupe Peak. I remember really enjoying the tour but not enjoying the cold, box lunch at the bottom. In the early 1950s my late father was an Explorer Scout troop leader and took the troop to the caverns. He actually discovered a new entrance and his name is on a plaque there somewhere.

My recommendation is to take the natural entrance. You really get a feel for the massiveness of the cavern. The sheer size of it and formations astonish at every turn.

Great video, my 2 cents is to 100% take the natural entrance

I grew up in Carlsbad and did the natural entrance . This was in the 50s and 60s you always had to take the elevator back up to the surface . The 80 foot climb up then decend down to the lunch room would make you hungry for the box lunches . that they had made up . There were numerous souvenir stands in that area too. The last time l went through the Caverns was in 1985 ,l took my nine year old daughter through them . It's great

Thank you, this was really helpful. I’m planning a trip there in April so I’m doing a little research now. I think taking the trail down and the elevator up is a great idea.

I was there last week and a few things need to be updated. The cafe down at the bottom is CLOSED. There were no signs at the top to indicate this and I was surprised after I hiked down from the natural entrance. I only took one bottle of water with me since no food or other drinks are allowed. The hike down is very steep and I wished I had more water or a snack. I assumed I could get something once I reached the big room but I was mistaken. I would have to stood in a long line for the elevator to get food/drink back up in the visitor center, and by the time I would have gotten back down I would have missed exploring the big room. So I toughed it out and still did the big room hike, but I felt like I was about to pass out near the end of it from the lack of water. I recommend eating a big meal before you go in and take a lot of water if you are going to hike in. Some people were carrying gallon jugs of water and I can see why.

My son and I will be there in the early evening on Dec 26th 2022, too late to visit the caverns. We will do the tour starting in the early AM on the 27th.
What can u recommend we do on the night of the 26th in Whites City? Thank you!

Honesty white city is small and we have no clue as to what will be open the day after Christmas

You really miss A LOT not going through the natural entrance. There’s way more than the big room that I like arguably better than the big room. The natural entrance is this giant almost perfect circle and it feels like you’re descending into Mordor. It’s otherworldly

I’m a few days we’ll be at the caverns again, my 4th trip. We’ve always done the natural enterance, I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way, unless you’re physically unable to.

At the time they park rangers lead a large group through the cavern . Along the way they would come to rest areas and talk about the cave and turn the lights off for a few minutes . I'm not sure if they do that , because even in November of 85 no one walked out . You took a receiver that picked up recordings at main points of interest .

Hi, I am curious where the sign is at 3:00 about Carlsbad with facts about the town? Is that at the Caverns or further in the city? Thanks!

You’re free to double check the news and their NPS website but I don’t see anything that indicates that
