I wish Oda writes a prequel to One Piece, with Roger as the main protagonist. It will definitely show us the strength of the old generation pirates like Whitebeard and Gecko Moria in full and in their prime.
His backstory his awesome and offers a way to see what could have happened to luffy if he went unprepared in the new world. He is surely one of my favorite characters in One piece
In thriller bark he said to Luffy that he won't survive the new world, not only he said it out of spite but as a genuine warning. If pre-timeskip Luffy barely defeated villains stronger than him (and couldn't even scratch the admirals), his crew would've been wiped out in the New World if they went there before timeskip.

He took so many L's, it's incredible he is still standing. Totally destroyed by Kaido Defeated by Luffy again Defeated by Jinbei. Seemingly killed by Doffy. Backstabbed by Shiriu. And he is still alive and even escaped
At his prime, Gecko was near equal to a young Kaido who hadn’t mastered his devil fruit. If he was still at prime level, he still would have lost to current Kaido.

Its interesting to think about how the writer said that dreams make you beautiful in One Piece. Koby grew taller and completely changed his image because he was actually working and trying to chase that dream. Moria is the exact opposite, he used to be bro of Giga-Chad proportions until he met Kaido. Kaido didnt just kill his crew and nearly destroy his body, he completely shattered Moria's dreams and took away any hope he had of chasing them.
Thing is: In a world where willpower is the source for the primary most powerful abilities, once your will is broken, you're done. I bet prime Moria and Crocodile both at least had powerful armament and observation haki, but after their defeats at the hands of Kaido and Whitebeard they lost that ability. I bet Crocodile has regained it by now though. Would explain that almost 2 billion bounty.

He seems to be the only character in the setting who actually let himself go instead of working to stay in shape as he got older. White Beard in particular stayed a monster even when he got whammed by both old age and generic shonen illness.

I'm hoping he eventually joins Cross Guild, and we get to see if Moria has regained some of the fire of his youth and motivated to grow again in strength to protect those he still has left, maybe even reuniting with Perona would be nice too.
Can’t express how much I like moria and adore his love for his friends. He went by himself to yonko lair knowing what he won’t be able to defeat not him, not his powerful commanders, just to save his friend. I really hope what perona saves him and he will return to his former glory

in his weakest form, and while being severely injured, he could hold in 1000 shadows...imagine his prime with haki strong enough to go 1 vs 1 against Kaido, and a whole city worth of shadows...with 1000 in his weak form without haki he could split an island in two with a punch..peak form, haki, 100.000 shadows, he could cause an atomic explosion with a punch.

Moria is underrated, he wasn't scared of kuma and telling kuma he knows about his powers suggesting he knows how to fight him, plus during thriller bark arc he was just toying with the whole sh crew and luffy before nightmare luffy appeared, i think that's what really beat moria the rest was just him barely standing up.
I wouldn't go that far since he lost to Kaido. Prime Moria for sure was stronger than every other Warlord in their prime excluding Mihawk because no other Warlord was ever strong as Mihawk.
It was confirmed that kaido was a beast since he was a kid, so gecko moria clashing with him as an adult shows how strong he was. Something must have happened for him to lose his strong will, I can imagine that losing your will may weaken or even make you lose your haki. Someone needs to ask Oda in a SBS. Depression could be the biggest killer of your own Haki.
Kaido slaughtered Moria's entire crew in front of him. Since Haki is your willpower, Moria lost all of his. So he likely lost all his haki when this happened. Moria is literally living the worst case story of himself, which is unfortunate. He could have been a Yonko with a zombie army or a boosted strength army capable of clashing with big moms and Kaidos armies.
Moriar is still one of if not almost my favorite character. He's just so strong, full of theme, and was such a badass before losing his OG crew to Kaido. Everyone calls him a walking L but that wasn't by far the case before. My guy was a Warlord for a reason, and had the world's largest ship for a reason. Aside from Dofi, I feel like with his motivation, maybe even beyond Dofi, like he had before Kaido, he could've been a 5th Emperor, like Luffy was.

Thinking about it makes it seem like Moria may have gotten weaker or just stayed at the level he was at before. If he was weak then kaido would have just blown him away but he had an even clash. The outcome may have been different if moria had a stronger team.

well haki is explained to be ones willpower. After losing everyone he loved, his willpower was shattered into tiny specs. leaving him no willpower, no haki.
When you stop following your dreams, that’s what happens, I’m not saying this as something motivational or anything like that, you straight up become physically weaker and less attractive in the One Piece world because you stopped following your dreams, just like Moriah did

I wouldnt say Moria was unprepared, he lost to one of the strongest caracters in one piece and it is described as a "battle" so he was pretty strong.

At his prime, Gecko was near equal to a young Kaido who hadn’t mastered his devil fruit. If he was still at prime level, he still would have lost to current Kaido.

Its interesting to think about how the writer said that dreams make you beautiful in One Piece. Koby grew taller and completely changed his image because he was actually working and trying to chase that dream. Moria is the exact opposite, he used to be bro of Giga-Chad proportions until he met Kaido. Kaido didnt just kill his crew and nearly destroy his body, he completely shattered Moria's dreams and took away any hope he had of chasing them.
In another timeline where his crew didn’t die, Moria is an emperor whose direct rival is Kaido-at least in my head.

He seems to be the only character in the setting who actually let himself go instead of working to stay in shape as he got older. White Beard in particular stayed a monster even when he got whammed by both old age and generic shonen illness.

Can’t express how much I like moria and adore his love for his friends. He went by himself to yonko lair knowing what he won’t be able to defeat not him, not his powerful commanders, just to save his friend. I really hope what perona saves him and he will return to his former glory
Moria is one of the most overpowered people in the series if they gave him any sort of redemption. His power are actually insane, imagine the possibility of awakening with such insane DF. He could probably be a god of death
in his weakest form, and while being severely injured, he could hold in 1000 shadows...imagine his prime with haki strong enough to go 1 vs 1 against Kaido, and a whole city worth of shadows...with 1000 in his weak form without haki he could split an island in two with a punch..peak form, haki, 100.000 shadows, he could cause an atomic explosion with a punch.

I wouldn't go that far since he lost to Kaido. Prime Moria for sure was stronger than every other Warlord in their prime excluding Mihawk because no other Warlord was ever strong as Mihawk.
It was confirmed that kaido was a beast since he was a kid, so gecko moria clashing with him as an adult shows how strong he was. Something must have happened for him to lose his strong will, I can imagine that losing your will may weaken or even make you lose your haki. Someone needs to ask Oda in a SBS. Depression could be the biggest killer of your own Haki.
Kaido slaughtered Moria's entire crew in front of him. Since Haki is your willpower, Moria lost all of his. So he likely lost all his haki when this happened. Moria is literally living the worst case story of himself, which is unfortunate. He could have been a Yonko with a zombie army or a boosted strength army capable of clashing with big moms and Kaidos armies.
Incredible how one loss can shatter a man forever. At least crocodile recovered from his losses to whitebeard and luffy.

Moriar is still one of if not almost my favorite character. He's just so strong, full of theme, and was such a badass before losing his OG crew to Kaido. Everyone calls him a walking L but that wasn't by far the case before. My guy was a Warlord for a reason, and had the world's largest ship for a reason. Aside from Dofi, I feel like with his motivation, maybe even beyond Dofi, like he had before Kaido, he could've been a 5th Emperor, like Luffy was.

50 Year Later
A group of young boys and girls were playing pirates on an island. Suddenly one of the boys stop.
"Hey, you guys hear that?"
"Hear what?" says another kid from the group.
"Shhhh...listen"
They all pause and listen. They hear a faint but clear violin echoing from the top of a hill near the shore. It is a familiar tune that Pirates used to sing long ago.
"C'mon let's go!" says the first boy and everyone else starts running towards the direction where the music was coming from.
They finally reach the top of the cliff and they find a tall skeleton with an afro sitting alone and playing violin in front of some tombstones. The kids walk towards him when they saw the tombstones clearly. There were no names.
Upon looking closer, they saw there were some items placed on each on the individual tombstones.
One had three swords, one had books, one had a long slingshot, one had a metallic rod, and so on.
The kids came quietly and stood behind the skeleton who was sitting in front of a tombstone which was bigger than the others and placed right at the center.
That tombstone was also unmarked but there was an old straw-hat on top of it with a jolly roger of a skull and cross-bones with the skull wearing a straw hat.
One of the kids who a bit older than the others, gasps.
"Mugiwara no Luffy..." he mumbles.
The skeleton stops playing and turns around.
"Oh hello there" the skeleton speaks with a gentle tone raising his hat with his hand to greet them.
"Did you know him? The P...Pirate King?" gasps the kid.
The skeleton becomes silent for a few seconds and lets out a gentle yohoho.
"Yes, he was my Captain" smiles the skeleton.
All of them gasps astonished. Their eyes widen and smiles.
"Did you really sail with the Pirate King!?" one of them exclaims.
"Well of course I did little one, I was blessed with the honor to be the ship musician because every pirate crew needs music you see!"
"What were they like? The Pirate King and his crew?" exclaims another, all excited.
"Oh where to begin! Well for starters, our shipwright was an eccentric yet brilliant cyborg who only ever drank cola. Our archeologist was a young lady who was troubled by her past yet found friendship with all of us. Our ship’s doctor was a tiny raccoon-dog, reindeer fellow. The marksman of the ship was a coward, but also noble and good-hearted. Our navigator was a foxy young woman with a nasty habit of stealing. The cook was a hothead and constantly tried to one-up with our first mate, who became the World's Greatest Swordsman and...."
"And the captain? The Pirate King?!" interrupts the older kid.
"Our Captain was the glue that held us all together, or should I say the rubber band? Yohoho! He was a spirit as free as the breeze that filled our sails and pushed all of us from the East Blue to the Grand Line, and on to Raftel where he found the One Piece."
A gentle wind blew across the cliff tousling their hair. They were all speechless.
"And if I were to say any more, I would say they were my family, and I miss them very much" smiles the skeleton.
Suddenly they hear a sound coming from the ocean. The kind of sound whales make. The kids looked from the edge of the cliff and saw a huge whale with scars all over its forehead crests, and shooting water through its blowhole.
The skeleton looks at the kids and laughs.
"Yohoho! How about a song? This one is Laboon's favorite..
