Weird. Seemed to me that we had known for a long time that temperature change is a major factor. But thinking about it, that might just be in high in the mountains where you got lots of water stored as ice, less so in lower terrain.
when I worked in deep underground mines, we observed a sharp increase in ground movement and subsequent falls of ground at the change of seasons . I wonder if they have a similar correlation with those formations .
I was on a cliff here in Minnesota the other day and suddenly froze with fear thinking it could break off into the falls. Now I have even more reason to be a wuss.
Seaweed Witch yes and dont walk under trees because they somtimes drop branches, and better not walk near any building incase someone drops a tool from the roof, honestly listen to yourself. how many people have died from rock falls. you are looking at 16 people dead since 1857, in yosimite from falling rocks, so you may as well stand near cliffs
I lived on Odda, Norway for 8 months, surrounded by cliffs with never melting Folgefonna glacier. Once in a very heavy rain few small rocks fell from the top and that's it. You can see giant stones laying around, but they are more than 1000 years old. During the explosions of dynamite I thought it's the end, but nothing happened. With heavy snow, wild streams when it rains and snow melts, giant waterfalls and severe hurricane winds, just a few trees fall sometimes. why? Norwegian rocks are much stronger than ones from Yosemite.
Its like a piece of an iceberg that breaks off over the water making a huge wave. However we know why icebergs do it. Maybe these rocks are constantly getting pushed upwards or getting pushed around by tectonic forces and that's causing rocks to fall.

The granite in Yosemite is exfoliating. It is under stress just sitting there from the stress of the rock formation. Weathering also cause rock fracture, freeze thaw.....
Oh my god, This makes me so happy that me and my buddies couldn't push this vw bug sized rock off a ledge while we were hiking in Yosemite... That could have ended terribly.
They don't "suddenly" fall. They are in the process of breaking loose to fall for up to thousands of years from primarily freezing and thawing of water in the cracks and expansion and contraction due to temperature changes.

Absolute speed limit through spacetime is the speed of light. On Earth, however, falling objects reach what's called a terminal velocity - when force of gravity is counterbalanced by air resistance. Terminal velocity of a person falling through Earth's atmosphere is ~ 53m/s = 195km/h = 122mph.
Nothing with mass can go as fast as light, but you will get very very close to the speed of light if the mass is light enough and there is enough, as Jeremy Clarkson would say: POWEEEEERRRRRR!

I wish I could convince Yosemite Park to hire me to watch rocks fall from cliffs and carry a crack-o-meter. Kudos to those scientists.

It's crazy how mountains, sand, water, the oceans.and air are not living things yet they can still change Earth and how it looks.
