      I get your motivation regarding permanently housing homeless people, but :
      1) Start giving away free housing to people, and other people are going to start asking " why do I have to work for my housing while other people don't "
      2) You will incentivize not working to have a place to live, same with food. If you can get all of your life sustaining goods free, MANY people will not work for them.
      Broadly disincentivize self sustainable (work to live) living, and your society will end up a wreck.

      so management needs to be pro bono, and all projects by legislation need to be a bid. you need to bid, i offer this for that much. and theres need to be at least 2 applications. AFAIK thats how it is in hungary government projects (hungary has a whole lot of other problems tho).

      @Ass Ketchup Having all volunteer workers for non-profits worked prior to the 1970's when the cost of living increases forced many stay at home moms to get jobs that paid them money. Who do you think did all of that volunteer work previously? It was women who weren't in the workforce. The number stay at home moms/dads isn't great enough to meet the demands of work needed to run even non-profit organizations if they had to count on them as volunteers. Plus, many in those positions have the same student debt loads that their peers in the corporate world do. They can't afford to work as volunteers, nor should they be expected to, unless we as a society are willing to compensate them in some way with more than a few lines on their resume. You seem to think that these organizations can successfully run on a high turnover of unpaid staff. There are many positions that require knowledge of non-profits and job specific knowledge and skills. You won't get that from a summer intern or a recent college graduate.

      When people say essential work, they do not mean essential to the person, but essential to society. If the job doesn't provide value to the society, then it is deemed non essential. E.g. a healthcare worker is essential and a data entry analyst is not

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 3 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      @@difference018 I'm well aware of what they mean, but the fact of the matter is still unchanged. There is no law that states what is essential to society, nor is there even a law that gives them the right to state what is essential to society. The free market determines what is essential. Employee's determine what is essential, based on what work they are willing to take at what pay. Society naturally determines what is essential. On top of that, the federal government can only regulate interstate commerce. Not in-state employment. And no legislative body has actually passed any laws defining nor granting powers in regards to "essential workers". And the reason they haven't is because it would be in violation of numerous laws, both state and federal, along with the constitution itself. The "essential worker" scheme was made up out of whole cloth, and is being exerted by people who don't even have the authority, and would never have the authority, due to the principle conflicts with existing laws and rights. If you believe they should be allowed to do this, that's your belief. But that belief has no authority under laws and rights, which means it does not meet the legal standards for application, which is just another way of saying it's an abuse of power....and it's not even just an abuse of power, it's a creation of power that doesn't even exist. It is lawless and unlawful.

      But do you know what else they are? Very difficult to corrupt. You don't see relatives of governors working in the welfare department getting paid $500k per year. You don't see tax-dodging wealthy people dumping money into welfare that also happens to contribute to a politician's campaign fund.

    I work at a small nyc shelter for the chronically homeless and it's actually one of the nicest and most pleasant places. The amount of waste is legendary though, and while I don't know how much the organization spends per resident, there's no doubt that it would be cheaper to give them all a regular apartment somewhere in brooklyn. Homelessness isn't about economics at the end of the day: it's about scaring people into jobs they don't want to do under threat of a hostile 3rd world lifestyle, and there are shelter systems who simultaneously profit from the existence of this situation while also improving the lives of people who were previously isolated and unhoused.

Lets see, what would it cost to provide homes for the homeless, food for the hungry, education to the ignorant, money to the poor, health to the sick, retirement to the aged, and freedom to the imprisoned? I guess every country in the world would like to know the answer to that one. I think an issue with the US college system might be that everyone expects to be able to attend it on their own terms - I am from a Central European country which has much cheaper tuition for national-grade Unis (I pay about 300€ per semestre) than American colleges. On the other hand, dorms are pretty much nonexistent, and if you fail an exam for the third time, you are banned from studying that subject again at any uni in the country (in theory, usually unis don't talk to each other enough to prevent you changing universities to avoid this). I have not heard a thing about a similarly rigid exmatriculation system from my US friends (it may exist - I just might not be aware of this). I find many of the comparisons between US and EU colleges asinine - yes, US college is quite obviously too expensive, but blindly transitioning to the EU model is not going to be as painless as US college students think, I imagine.

    • @tomcapon4447

      The price of both has simply expanded to consume all the money made available. Consumers aren't able to comparison shop, and the government isn't allowed to negotiate drug prices, so they go up. Students are neither vetted nor allowed to default on loans, so colleges demand they take more and more from the bank for tuition.

    Health insurance IS the reason that hospital visits cost so much money. If nobody had insurance, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies would be forced to charge a fee that people can afford. But when you have the government or massive institutions who everyone has to use a middle man, who often get kickbacks from the drugs they cover in order to make the drugs unaffordable, then the natural progression is going to be unaffordable health care. Couple that with hospitals being forced to take anyone that comes into the ER, no matter how minuscule their "problem" at the ridiculous prices, then the costs are passed on to people who do pay.

I have seen some new small campers selling for less than 15 grand. Or 60 grand suitable for a family of four or five. Many counties in America have a RV park with rentals for less than a half grand per month with hookup for basic utilities. Used campers tend to drop in value as well if brand new is too expensive. Many living off the grid have converted shipping containers which can be stacked on top of another up to a certain height. How anyone can charge 4 grand per month for a filthy jail cell is pure GREEDY CORRUPTION... Urban America nonsense... Hey Louis, I've been watching your vids for a while and only just stumbled upon this one. Your persistence with Right to Repair was very admirable.
    This video really resonates with me as my mother has been in and out of homeless shelters in NYC for the better part of the last three years. I'm not in a situation to house her myself, and with her mental health issues, it's been difficult for me to gauge the reality of the situation at her shelter as I'm not able to physically enter it. I've been calling constantly trying to help her figure out a more permanent situation and have booked several meetings with the shelter's "housing specialist". She's been telling me for ages that she thinks they want to keep her there forever.
    At first I thought she was overreacting and maybe not doing her part in trying to get the paperwork done to get out of there. I never considered that they might actually be incentivized to keep her in there until seeing this video. It's infuriating, I'm right behind you on anything to get this fixed.

    • @Ash-Hash
      @Ash-Hash 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      UPDATE: Now that my mother has finally received a CITHYFHEPS voucher, it's nigh impossible to find a landlord that is willing to accept it, despite it being stated that it is illegal for a broker or landlord to decline the voucher.
      I've tried getting in contact with the shelter or with any CITYFHEPS office and they have done nothing but make me run in circles. Whenever I call the shelter I'm answered rudely as if I'm interrogating the person who answers the phone.
      When I called and asked to speak to the housing specialist I was given the run around and was told that they can "Neither confirm nor deny that the housing specialist is in today". After asking again I was told they would be in later in the day. It's near impossible to get any answers out of these people who don't seem to want to even give 1% effort at their jobs.

    When I was younger, my family told me to stay away from politics and to never watch news everyday. As I became an adult, I see why... I study political science in college and regret it all to a certain point. Everything political doesn’t always mean political in a government sense. I can never see life again as i did when I was 17...

      Your family was wrong. It is to your benefit to understand politics, know your environment and what is going on around you.

    I have an issue with any system that incentivizes the promotion and exploitation of homelessness.

    "Incestuous Relationship" I did a double take on this one. Never thougt I'd hear that in this context. But it is in fact an accurate description of what happens in politics.

    I'm in Canada and in my city, I'm trying to do the same as you, awareness and calling out the BS, It's hard, but I will say you're a good man and an inspiration. THANK YOU for being a caring human. you have my full support. Thank you for trying because it's better than not doing anthing at all.
    When the senate was asking her to go and get an essential job, she should have said, sure, no problem, where do we find these so called essential jobs? and keep saying it until he gets it.
    hats off to you brother.

    You didn’t think they planned all this BS? The building owners knew they were getting bailed out. why you think they never dropped their asking prices

      It’s like when companies do illegal moves, they already calculated the fines into their ROI and decided it was worth doing it and pay a fine than not doing it at all. It’s a different game, different rules for them

    I definitely think part of why the bills are insane is lack of price transparency, and also the artificial limitation of certain residency slots to keep certain specialty doctor slots commanding a premium

    As a Canadian, visiting cities in the United States was a bad experience. There were so many homeless people asking for money, I needed to rent an electric scooter to avoid them because I got tired of running away. For that reason I have decided not to visit cities like New York or Austin Texas for business. It's really a shame, other countries look at this as a turn off, no one wants to do business there. Clean it up, help your fellow neighbors for shit sakes.

    People.should look out for each other when they can and then interests of those in their community. It isnt the government's job to tell people how to live their lives OR if they can. The number one issue we are facing right now, is the media and the government, have convinced people that they actually care about them, and these people believe it so much, that they will attack their own neighbors because their neighbors don't believe what the media and government has told them to believe
