    A paint thickness gauge isn't a luxury.. it is a necessity! I had a brand new Mazda CX5 that I was doing a coating on. It had paint thickness of 51 to 90 microns!

    The issue with paint thickness gauges is that they give a reading for the total film build including e-coat,sealer,primer,basecoat and clearcoat.However,they are unable to differentiate how thick each layer is.
    When it comes to the level and type of cars being worked on at Esoteric, I believe they are a must to establish what they have to work with.Any way to minimize risk on those high end cars must be taken.Imagine having to tell the owner of a Ferrari that you burned through a fender edge,,yikes!For the average weekend warriors they are a bit overkill.Good vid as usual.👌

      DeFelsko PosiTector 200 can measure and show you the thickness of each individual layer of the paint. It can also measure on non-metallic surfaces. But it runs about 2500 USD so few detaliers can afford it.

      @@Twiztid_Metal To be perfectly honest you don't need that expensive of a tool. Rarely you will need to know a thickness on non-metallic surface. I highly doubt there are 5 detailers in my country that own one. I've done some couple Ferraris, a Lamborghini and even a first generation Dodge Viper which body is almost entirely made of composite materials, and even considering the rarity and price of that car in my country - I didn't feel the need to upgrade to a gauge that can measure it's paint.

    I hate to be a buzz kill here, but these guages can be helpful in what Todd talks about, but they cannot tell the actual layer thickness of the single stage or the clear layer, only the total depth, in order to do that you would need the Defelsko 200 Advanced, which is over 2000.00. I don’t know of any others that read individual layers .

    • @Esotericdetail
      @Esotericdetail  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That machine doesn't measure individual layers on metal substrates though. This is why we refer to them as "insurance policies" because it's simply providing you with an overall picture of what's going on.

    I use it but it's not necessary for the average detailer, I survived 40 years without one and thousands of cars many of them high dollar show and drag racing cars with very expensive paint jobs...

      @Esotericdetail  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If by average detailer you mean people who don't use a machine to polish, then you are correct. But if you're doing paint correction at a higher level, then it's an absolute must to make sure you know exactly what you're dealing with before you start correcting.

      no but knowing clear coat is around 1/3 of the total thickness you can sort of estimate, also take measurements of the door jambs cause they have the thinnest paint/clearcoat.

    Why would a detailer need to know how thick the paint is it should be clear coat thickness that matters to know if doing a high buff on the car your not going to burn through the clear coat makes sense I looked it up it details coat measuring not paint.paint is a underlayment not a coat like clear coat exactly what it says...😂😂😂

    When you feature a product, it seems to me to post a link for that product would be helpful.
    At least mention if you sell it or direct you to that company's website. After searching for it on their website, shows no USA distributors and they want to email you a quote for the price. I can only assume this is a very expensive high end item and not for the average detailer. Love Esoteric but the lack of details on this video is way less than 5 stars.
