Chris Davidson Don't be sure, Microsoft still owns Rareware, the company that made the original games. Unless Nintendo does something weird, they're probably not going to be on the system.

I don't think anybody would be happy with an N64 classic edition that didn't have GoldenEye on it.

I would be completely fine with it. I owned Goldeneye like everyone else back in the day and I personally prefer multiple shooters on the console over it. Turok 1,2,3 and 007 World Is Not Enough for example.

I know that Goldeneye will hardly be present (because of licensing issues), but if Nintendo can get it included, it would be wonderful. This game is a milestone, it is impossible to think of the N64 without remembering Goldeneye alongside Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time.
Yeah there are on good terms with Microsoft now they just need bond company in on it I mean even if they both agreed to have it released on Xbox and switch same time with online cross play
I didn't have an N64 but I knew several people who did, and the staple games were always Super Mario World, Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Star Wars Pod Racer, & Goldeneye...If those were the only games included, I would buy it.
I think it’s way more likely than most people realize. After they paid up for Super FX so they could surprise everyone with Star Fox 2, it’s clear they’re willing to work out licensing in a way they’ve never done in the past. I think they’ll make it happen.
or you can just hack it and install any game you want in 30 minutes you know

It Unfortunately Wont Be Included One Of The reasons (at least for me) I liked seeing MY Pokemon in 3D (the ones from my GB games) so.. all you have is rental Pokemon.... yeah it wont be fun without having your Pokemon from a GB game.

Miles Away How are little kids the target demographic? Nintendo is capitalizing on nostalgia with its "classics" series. Target demographic for the N64 classic is 90's kids and earlier.
And there's more to stadium than just connecting your gameboy lol.
I don't think Nintendo will do the N64 next year. They'll probably do the Game Boy Classic since it's gonna be less complex to manufacture.

Actually Gameboy Classic is far more likely. They could use the exact same hardware as the nes classic like the snes classic did and not have many issues emulating it with said hardware. They don't have to make it portable and they likely wouldn't want to, rather, they'd likely just make it like the other classics. Furthermore the gameboy used essentially the same buttons as the nes(d-pad, start, select, a, b).
In comparison, an n64 classic would require more beefy hardware since the snes classic had to make many sacrifices to avoid too many slowdowns and it's comparable to a raspberry pi 2. They would need something better than the pi 3 to emulate n64 games well enough. The N64 controller is entirely different from the nes and snes controllers. While I wouldn't say that it's out of the question to do that as opposed to just using classic controllers, it's just a lot less standard compared to how they could essentially just stick nes classic controllers into a new shell.

The will make smaller N64 controllers for the N64 Mini, and about emulation - it's already possible to play N64 games on the SNES Mini using Retroarch ;)
Sure possible. It's not like Retroarch is going to stop you from trying, and it will do it's best software wise. But you do realize that just because you can use retroarch that that doesn't mean that everything retroarch has will work well right? For instance, take a look at this video here:th-cam.com/video/d1wXHumS1gw/w-d-xo.html Notice how poorly things run. It's using the mupen64plus core which is a good n64 core. The software is there. Retroarch is a good piece of software and mupen64plus is a good emulator and core. The problem is that the hardware just isn't really there. Some things can be done sure to make the game run better, but these changes would generally entail making things less accurate. Consider how Nintendo released snes vc games on the n3ds, and if you try to run these vc titles on an old 3ds, they run at a low speed.
Some people did make a competent fork of snes9x that runs games well on an o3ds, but there are always going to be sacrifices to accuracy in order to gain performance. For snes it's one thing, but if you've ever used project64, you would know that while it wsa made to run on pretty much any toaster, that there are very clear sacrifices and these aren't always as simple as something like a missing shadow or a sound effect sounding a bit off. Very often, games had very glaring issues. I'm talking things like polygons glitching and stretching everywhere.
At the end of the day, you start figuring out what emulator devs and users mean when they refer to games in their compatibility as perfect, almost perfect, playable, runs, and things like that. Because while you may be able to eventually get something to a playable state, do you really think Nintendo can just sell a game running like in that video?
Perfect Dark, Conkers Bad Fur Day, and Golden Eye absolutely need to be on this system. We’ve seen Sony put out a couple M for Mature games on the psx classic and I think Nintendo needs to include at the very least perfect dark and golden eye. Conkers Bad Fur Day is a pipe dream but it’s still my favorite game to this day

Pilotwings 64 was one of the first games released for N64. It truly showed what the N64 was capable of. Pilotwings 64 needs to be on the classic!!!!!! Wave Race needs to be for sure too!

25 games? the count definitely won't go up from the SNES. I honestly don't expect to see this system any time soon TBH. The state of N64 emulation is not as flawless as 8 and 16 bit systems. The chips required to run the N64 games smoothly will be a little pricier than the other consoles and might narrow margins too much for Nintendo to put out the system for a while. Also, the whole unit will require more than the 10 or so watts put out via USB, particularly if each controller has rumble, so expect those to have batteries. The elephant in the room though is Rare games; without them the N64 library is simply not as good.
Another problem are the controllers. The NES and SNES controllers are fairly cheap to make and small. The N64 controllers are much bigger and more expensive. With how heavily reliant the N64 was on multiplayer games they need to include at least 2 controllers and those would likely cost at least 30 dollars if not more.

The plus mode is a nice idea, but it's a dream.
They're not going to release upgraded N64 games but rather just true-to-form N64 games.
They might add 1 never released (at least not worldwide) game, but just 1 at most.
I would love to see GoldenEye, Perfect Dark and Conker's Bad Fur Day, but those likely won't happen since they were made by Rare and Microsoft bought them back in 2002 :(

Cowntsikin Uhh If it has blood then it probably won't be there. There is nothing preventing kids playing this from playing m rated games. This is why they are careful with what games they use. It was only ok in street fighter because it was tame and it just comes to show how fucked up your opponent is after the battle.
Game Guy there's no blood in Goldeneye. It's the second best selling game on Nintendo 64 I believe, it should be on the system.

I know this won’t get much attention, but that ad placement was perfect! Right after the top 10 list.
I wish that Nintendo would use USB input rather than the Wii inputs for these controllers. They should be future-proof with the Switch since it's eventually going to get the Virtual Console. Either that, or use the original inputs and make them backwards compatable with the original consoles.
But why would they do USB or Original inputs when they can use a different one (Wii) and milk users with more controller sales? :/

Yaywalter the remasters of 1 and 2 on steam are a much nicer experience with all the framerates and controls fixed.
That is true (I own and have beaten both PC remasters), but the same logic could be used against some of the other entries on this list... like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Star Fox 64. And hoping for the N64 Classic to have the enhanced visuals of the 3DS ports of those games is a pipe dream.
Besides, not everybody has a PC or is interested in PC gaming. And if it's to satisfy nostalgia, some people might prefer to experience the games in their original form regardless of what benefits a subsequent port or remaster might have.
Those games have a decent amount of blood and gore, right? It's been a while since I've played them, but I'm pretty sure they do and Nintendo has been trying to keep these Classic re-releases kid friendly. Otherwise, I'm sure we would have had Mortal Kombat II or Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on the SNES Classic.
I think they should implement the system of using old game cartridges as well, just so that there will be a guarantee that people would be able to play their personal favourite games on the system. Only if they implement it.

After the inclusion of Super FX games on the SNES Classic, I think Goldeneye is a lot more likely than you make it out to be. Nintendo is willing to pay up for licenses in a way they never have before for this series, and Goldeneye would be a huge deal exactly because it’s never been re-released.

I have the original NES Classic, and te original Sega Genesis Minny. Both have a great selection of games. If they ever actually release this, I'd be all over it!
Sorry, but Goldeneye 007 will not happen because it’s a contractually licensed game (which is why it never hit Virtual Console, and why games based on outside brands are rarely re-released, especially if that brand uses the face of a celebrity like Piece Bronson or in the case of Punch Out, Mike Tyson). As for Waverace, I really hope it’s there, but if it is, I’d be willing to bet the Kawasaki brand will be absent.

Licensing is a poor excuse for not including it imo. If Nintendo wanted it, they would have it. I'd say it's more likely it won't be included due to age rating. They will want to include games that are age appropriate/family friendly. Same reason there would be no Quake II or Doom 64.

Though Diddy Kong Racing is in a legal minefield like the other Rare games, this is still a great list you put together!
Donkey Kong Country says hello.
The issue that Diddy Kong Racing faces that Donkey Kong Country does not is that DKR features characters owned exclusively by Rare (and thus Microsoft as well). Conker and Banjo would be the prime examples.
Not sure if Rare/MS maintained rights to other original characters like Timber and such as well, but the reality is that MS would need to play ball for DKR to make an appearance on the system.
Ultimately without the inclusion of any Rare titles featuring original IPs, I feel like a "Nintendo 64 Classic Edition" is going to feel lacking. Rare's games were some of the very best made for the system.

Nintendo owns donkey Kong country, but not DK64, and maybe not Diddy Kong racing... But they made a remake of DKR for the DS, so there's hope.

I'm guessing the entire board will need to be remade for the N64, and they'll use the current hardware to release a GB+GBC Classic system. That'll give them time to continue developing the hardware. That said, I think most of the games on the Classic N64 would be the things already on the e-shops, since those games are already known to be emulator friendly for the Devs. That said, I'd love to see a bunch of Japanese only games. Oh, and Quest 64.

actually Earthbound 64 was scraped for the DD, but got reworked into a game called mother 3. Mother 3 was a Japan only game and was the sequel to Earthbound, Earthbound in Japan is Mother. So there is an Earthbound 64, just on the GBA. You can play it thanks to a fan translation too.

Lagless is impossible through emulation. You will always have at least 2 frames of lag plus what ever your tv adds to that.

crts don't have hdmi ports, and alot of converters add display lag.
i think this might sound weird but nintendo might not make this for the next decade or may never, because they have made the n64 classic for the switch so they don't really have to make a physical n64 classic. but this is just what i think they could release n64 classic

Personally, I think the N64 Classic will only have 20 games.
I also think Nintendo will go with Mario Party 2 over the original simply because of the stick rotation mini-games.
Also, I seriously, seriously doubt ANY licensed title will be on the system, so no Rogue Squadron.
I don't think Diddy Kong Racing will be on there because of Conker and Banjo. Even if Rare was still under the purview of Nintendo, Conker is no longer kid-friendly.
Same thing with Beetle Adventure Racing. Nintendo's not gonna pay Volkswagen for the rights to the VW Beetle.
To replace those three games, I would put on Harvest Moon 64, Mario Tennis 64, and Mario Golf 64.

I say only 15 games... We went from 30+ games down to 21 games, and now N64 has larger games that need more power and storage...
I doubt the storage would be a concern, as I remember the largest games were 512 mbit = 64 mbyte.
Maybe a few of rares titles will be in there since Microsoft and Nintendo seem to be buddies now

Here's a prediction: they won't make them because N64 emulation takes actual work and they can only get away with so much stealing from other people's emulators and fixed ROMs. They couldn't even be bothered to put the effort into the $60 Super Mario 3 pack.
Being unlikely to see Golden Eye or Perfect Dark I believe Turok II: Seeds of Evil should be on the list over Doom 64

My bro is HOPEFULLY will give me his old N64 for Christmas.
I just cant wait to not only replay my earliest childhold memories, but the memories of my brother who passed recently. My snes classic arrives in 1 day, i remember some of the games, and have a feeling he played some of the other games before he bought an nes controller and the system actually caught fire.
An n64 classic will actually make me cry... i beat all of those games with him. Til i turned 10, all of em were with him. I was born in 95 but these games made me confused cuz of the graphics when i was a kid.
Nontheless, ill love playing my snes in his memory and if a n64 classic is made, ill cry a few times but love it as well.
Thought instead of Pokemon Snap Pokemon stadium
you'd be losing a majority of the experience without the Game Boy transfer pack.

And it won't happen anytime soon, as the N64 emulation is still pretty far from perfect after all these years. That's also why there's no Saturn or Dreamcast mini.

what's funny is I have both the snes classic and original 1994 model of snes hooked up to a modern tv, of course they are on different tv's because I couldn't fit my snes classic with the original for not enough hdmi ports

Aw man, Diddy Kong Racing was the one of the first games I ever played as a kid, and I really hope it's on the N64 classic. Such a fun game that still holds up today quite well.
Unless the Disney company is feeling ultra generous, don't count on the Star Wars game coming to the retro console. Their license fee for the one game will likely boost the price of each console by $10. Great video, though. I'm a yuge fan of Mario Kart 64!

Rountree1985 I’m not sure what indicates that about him or if you are just trolling/flaming, but he’s right in one sense, Disney is a very big and powerful company, and they want to make their returns on Star Wars, and so far they haven’t done as well as they had hoped regardless on how you feel about the new films, that being said, Disney has a history with Nintendo, and are probably more likely to work with them than other companies, and there may be a simple solution to this, namely not actually including the games on the console, and taking a different approach of having some sort of virtual store, some sort of proprietary memory cards (maybe they could look like cartridges and go in the fake cartridge slot), and maybe like a royalty deal or something on the actual game itself that you would get from the VS and store on your memory card.
(Edit: the console could include one of these cartridge memory cards with like 10 or 20 games on it.)

Great video and pretty good list of games. Although some of the selection is questionable in my opinion and that is besides the Dark Horse list. And yes I am one of those who would love to be able to play Harvest Moon 64 since its not as easy to get, the only (huge) issue I have with is the timer going way too fast and giving you too little time to do task each day in the game, would not mind that gets changed to have more time.
Also like to see some Rareware games like Banjo-Kazooie, but sadly hard with copyright/license issues even though Microsoft lets it go to waste...

Wow! I own most of the games on this list. I just started playing Mischief Makers. Only because I've never been in the game before. The games that I don't already have are Pokemon Snap, Mario Party, (only because the games didn't look fun at the time they came out and still don't don't catch my eye today.) And OgreBattle 64, only because I never heard of it. And finally the games that didn't come to the States. So if an N64 classic does come out I might have to pass on it. But it'll look good next to my NES classic and SNES classic.

We actually don't know all that much about where Mother 64 was left. The last we saw of it was mostly just from the demos at Space World 2000. It was in development from 1994 to 2000, so it could've been pretty far along. Though it was cancelled at the same time as Space World, that was only a demo, and no one really knows how far the full game was finished before being cancelled.
But here's the issue: Star Fox 2 was completely finished long before the SNES Classic released. Earthbound 64 on the other hand wasn't finished until its GBA release.

From 2021, the only thing that we got that's close to an N64 Classic is the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion pack that features an N64 Emulator for the modest price of $49.99 for individual memberships and for a steeper price of $79.99 for family memberships.
