Oh, don't you know it! I try to get friends to listen to his stuff, but I dunno.. I guess I pick friends with mediocre musical taste.. they don't seem to care much for Mr. Tobin's work.. a shame, but there it is.. I guess that leaves more for us! ;-)
Those familiar with Solid Steel live in Melbourne, 2004, can appreciate the genius that is Amon Tobin. He copped flack for being the first producer to use Final Scratch in a live recorded set. Hearing unfinished work mixed live into existing tracks was mind blowing then and still holds up as one of the greatest live sets ever recorded.
I was one of those people that had a slight problem with him going automix/digital. Doing a set without having to beatmatch is arguably just hitting autoplay and aggressively moving faders/knobs while dancing around pretending to do more than is really happening. I've seem him do 2-3 deck vinyl sets going back to 1996 or so and as someone who has been spinning vinyl since around 1995 I just can't get into automated sets all that much... I still spin almost exclusively 2-3 deck vinyl to this day and my fans seem to appreciate the effort and the massive variance from show to show. Since 2004 Amon has done a ton more of his analog vinyl sets that I've seen so it's not like he subscribed to a single format, and quite honestly it's cool that he was willing to try out something new that gave him the ability to mix more tracks at the sacrifice of the fine art of beatmatching. All his sets are great but the tours where he's gone digital/vinyl seem to sound exactly the same from city to city, night to night... exactly the same. I'd love a true live P.A. set from him. Obviously he can do it but in the 10-20 times I've seem him it's never been a full analog/digital keyboard/drum machine grand live P.A. experience. I'm talking tons of gear, bring the whole studio Prodigy style. I'd pay extra for that if I had to. No problem. Thats the Amon Tobin we all deserve. I want to seem him have to sweat the whole set juggling multiple keyboards, ect, big time :)
@@milesdysonsphere752 It's a great debate and worth talking about even months later :) The shift is in focus. From a focus on beat matching to a focus on blending tracks in ways you can only do digitally because of key tuning for example. It comes down to what you appreciate more, the ability to make two tracks run at the same time or the ability to turn two tracks into something completely different. The sweat and work is the same it's just directed to a different skillset. Watch and ask yourself how many DJ's could pull this off th-cam.com/video/jP0A9mzR3pM/w-d-xo.html

I am a popular eseist these days, so I want to state my opinion about Amon Tobin. I think he is a genius, comparable to AFX, Basic Channel and such. The Gas dude:) The reason I forgot about Gas is that he is much different than Amon Tobin. The latter goes insane with the drum machine, just like AFX, they both are ahead of our times in terms of making machine sound more human than actual people on the drum set and bass. He is the master of open hi hat, it sounds just awesome, and the idea is awesome, such a mayhem on them open hihats that it's in front of kick and snare!! The open hihats just slam forward, and kickdrums try to follow:) I love it:)
Somewhere in tropics, the crispy air of summer nights, as the stars engulf the night skies you sip your favorite pineapple mangoe shake, the soft powdery sand tickles your toes as you wade in the water. Life is beautiful, the palm trees are swaying and the music fills the air!
60 % of Amon Tobin I don't find remarkable. BUT the 20 % that I do ....Is absolutely incredible. some of the tracks here fall directly into that category.
super to hear these tunes again, back in 1999 2000 .. Supermodify blew the mind and the drum programming... Super sample mangling madness.. now one can hear the sounds of the baja brazil mutated...
All of the comments are beautiful, the selection is too! I've loved his style since the first time I heard it, and most of these are tracks that I'm less familiar with. Enjoying the next hour, a happy listener.
I didn't get turned onto this stuff until about 10 years after I stopped smoking, but I still love this stuff. It's just good music. Not for everyone, I don't think.
This is purely wicked. Thank you so much for your vision, Amon Tobin, somewhere out there! A treasure indeed and crafted with such loving & soulful care. Bless you, man!
amon tobin u got ya boy dj kontrol..smoke a lot..i love smoke cannons and was expecting some smoke blowing everywhere..dig the music tho..u need to bring that to jackson mississippi..i have a venue.. not as big as ones ur use to but def big enough to make u lots of money..and of course me to..people would freak out here if they say that 3d mapping bro..
Gute Zeit...y
I think I hurt him, I just didn't write a single word about him during my music eseist career. I have an excuse, but it's somehow weak, or even pathetic. I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE THE FOLEY ROOM ALBUM. But! 1) All the other albums are just blasting! No bullshit. Live virtuoso on programmed buttons! Check him out! 2) The only reason the Foley Room Album is not as stonking as others, is that he wanted to be not one era ahead, but like 2000 years ahead!! and he didn't succeed! He made strange songs with sounds from the kitchen and garage, like falling spoons, crashing cups, what not, how you call that shit that you smash into hamburger with a knife? VIDELEC is the polish name. nevermind, the album is just erratic, but it's still moral victory, and a good try as a formal art! So please Amon Tobin forgive me and do some tutorial about a storming mayhem on the open hihats!! Sometimes I lay on bed and try to solve the principles and schema of your open hihat riddims!! they cool!
Thanks for me music, but please, DON'T SMOKE at all. Cigarettes are deadly and weed creates dumb and lazy couch potatoes. Breath air, thats the only high you need.
Tobin is definitely one of the most underrated musicians of our generation

Alan Kirby Dude, this has NOTHING to do with Amon Tobin. This is a mix made from his music, but he isn't regulating this youtube channel.

I feel a really similar vibe in Funky Porcini's oldschool prods if you are looking for another artist
I feel like Funki Porcini is really unknow don't you?
Incredible fact when you think he made a deeply psychedelic jazz music :)
I bougth Hed phone sex in 1995. Hippies and stoners know him very well. Squares and hipsters not so much... But most stuff from Ninja tune is awesome.
