  • Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Steam Railway Cotswold Festival of Steam 2023. Filmed Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th May 2023, released Sunday 14th May 2023.
The GWSR held their annual Cotswold Festival of Steam on the 12-14th May 2023 with the theme 'Cheltenham and Gloucester Steam Days' which featured a variety of visiting locos that would have worked along the line in BR days.
The first visitor, 75014 "Braveheart" was visiting from the Dartmouth Steam Railway & Riverboat Company for a period of a few months to cover a lack of steam locomotives on the GWSR. The class were a common sight on the line in BR days working goods and semi-fast services, making "Braveheart" a suitable visitor for the gala.
The second visitor, "Pendennis Castle" was making it's third visit to a preserved line since returning from a major overhaul in 2022, the engine has quite a claim to fame as it starred in the 1925 British Empire Exhibition with Flying Scotsman. It then, later that year, went to to beat the Scotsman on trials on ECML and even toured Australia where it again met up with the Scotsman in 1989 for Australia's bicentennial celebrations. It since returned to the UK in 2000 and has been restored by the Didcot Railway Centre. "Pendennis Castle" would have worked named trains such as 'The Cornishman' and 'The Cheltenham Flyer' over the line in BR days. As well as being allocated to Gloucester between November 1948 and October 1952, which made it a suitable visitor for the Gala.
Although, the third visitor, Pug 11243 never actually would have ventured as far south as Gloucester, it represents 0-4-0 wheelbase locomotives that would have been seen working at Gloucester docks and beyond. 11243 was often found at Winchcombe on shunting duties during the gala, as well as a few short passenger trains.
The forth & fifth visitors, 78019 and 31806, both classes would have been seen working freight and light passenger duties at Gloucester and Cheltenham respectively.
The timetable featured intensive services with goods trains, local stopping services including Hayles Abbey Halt and non-stop expresses, as well as 'Pug' 11243 on passenger and goods shuttles between Toddington and Winchcombe.

My parents and I went on the Warwickshire and Gloucestershire Steam Railway last year.
One day later we went to Broadway Tower.

Does anyone know why they were top and tailed on some trains ? Was a run round loop out of action at one end ? Thanks

Thank you 👍. So, some trains between Toddington and Broadway were top an tailed to speed up run around times because they only needed to spend 5 minutes at Broadway whilst trains with one engine would have to spend at least 15+ minutes at Broadway running around their train. And yes, Broadway does have an operational run round loop.
