      Thank you Tim… yeah, when I see one more CGI suite or make up I will go berserk ;-) Practicals look so much better. My next (long term) project will be practical, too. Combining stop motion, scaled miniatures, and rear projection to recreate something like the "Terminator (1) in the factory" scene.

    Effectively you are recreating what compact photo cameras do when they flash. You know, those red eye pictures. Strong light on the same axis as the lens. The difference is mainly in light intensity and getting the light in the actual optical path instead of very close to it.
    Cool tutorial, thank you. :)

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Christian……Yes, same principal physics… but this is the way to "maintain" that effect in film (you couldn't with just sticking a bright light on your cam) even with closed iris.

    Glad to see this. I was amazed when I read in Cinefex #155 about BR 2049 that "In designing replicant characters, the production abandoned the telltale metallic eye-glimmer that signified synthetic humans in the previous film. 'The metallic lenses used on the first Blade Runner are no longer available,' noted makeup designer department head Donald Mowat. 'Those lenses were hard, they were uncomfortable and the dangers associated with them were severe.'"
    I wonder if they ever printed a correction.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That is such a bullshit... they should be ashamed! One google search reveals all tricks stated by the original film crew. There is really no excuse. Thanks for exposing this blunder Max.

    That was awesome! That's by far the best way to do it without too much hassle or ton's of editing! Really quite simple and it costs very little to setup. I also liked the overlay, maybe you could do a step by step on how you created that and wish you would do more like these!

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you Richard... the overlay is very basic... just using a couple of masks to blend fitting images.
      Simply use a background that fits your foreground and dissolve the foreground slowly into the background. Duplicate foreground on 3 layers. 1st just 20% transparency (gets some atmosphere in). 2nd very wide feathered mask around your subject. 3rd a narrow fathered mask around your subject. This is not a "works all the time" thing... just work it out for any given task, the human eye is easily fooled. Good luck

I knew nothing about "Replicants" or "incept dates" or anything like that. But I was so mesmerized by the movie. The visuals, the music, the sounds. I own the soundtrack. I played the Westwood game. Thx for this vid, very helpful. Yesterday for my final in lighting class, I attempted to recreate the Rachel Meets Deckard scene with a model friend. I got everything but the eye reflection.Nice to know how to do it for later though.

      Pleasure Dan… Sorry that you got it to late… I heard they did the original lighting with just one light and a bounce (plus the glow light)… did you do it the same way?
