Volkswagen Passat Door Mirror Replacement

How to change remove the side door mirror on a Volkswagen Passat. Model seen is a B5.5, year 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005

It would seem that the rear view mirror mounting and connections could have been designed so that both could be accessible after removing the black triangular cover with the little tweeter, but NOOOOO.
