I just went to my Volvo dealer about this yesterday with my 2009 S40. My bulb went out in my trunk about three months ago. Then, two weeks before Christmas, I went to the mall, and put all my Christmas presents in the trunk. Got home, went to open the trunk, and it would not open, and just made a whirring sound. Christmas Eve, I thought I would try to open it, because I had a bottle of wine in there for a party, and it had rolled too far for me to reach it from the back seat. The trunk opened, and worked up until yesterday, January 7th, when I took it to the dealer. They told me there has to be a wiring issue, and that they charge $110 an hour to figure it out. I said never mind, I'll keep going through the back seat....ha ha. I will show them this video, and ask them how much they will charge to do this. Thanks for sharing this.
This was perfect thank you. Have volvo S40 2008 and the trunk would not open, no motor sounds when pushing the button. I ordered a new switch thinking it was that, delivered cost of $25, and that didnt solve the problem. Watching your video with the broken wires was the key. I had 3 broken wires inside the black rubber protector. I trimmed and soldered them, taped individually, then together. Also to get room have to cut a relief slice in the rubber protector, then just put it back and taped that up as well - all working. Thank you.
THANK YOU IT WORKED I REPLACE MY WIRING HARNESS EVEN THOUGH IT LOOKS BRAND NEW I WAS SKEPTICAL ON BUYING NEW HERNESS BUT I DID ANYWAYS AND INSTALLED IT TOOK ME 15 TO 20 MIN VERY EASY AFTER PUTTING EVERYTHING BACK TO GATHER I STARTED THE CAR AND THE LIGHT WAS GONE .....I FELT LIKE A MILLION BUCKS IT WAS DRIVING ME CRAZY SEEING THIS LIGHT CONSTANTLY ON MY DASHBOARD)))))))
This worked well. Great video. The trunk switch is also a known problem point. I'd replaced that a year ago on my 2004 S40 and was shocked when it again refused to open. The new harness was about $50 from a dealer. Thanks again!
Thank you Robert, very informative and helpful. your step by step instruction is some of the best I've reviewed. And you saved me several hundred dollars.
Great video ... common fault on Volvo S40 ... Mine said "Boot Lid Open" ...when shut .... go to the wiring loom as shown in video .... peel back the rubber and re-join the broken wire ... sorted ............ Note .. make sure the rubber grommet is secured as water will get in and you will have a wet patch behind passenger seat.
You're the best, thanks for sharing! Fixed my 2010 s40 that would open the trunk when I turned on the lights. The double screwdriver clip removal tip made this go smoothly. Much appreciated.
On the 2010 S40, the only thing I'd add is that the rubber bumper knobs turn a quarter turn and then slip out. I did break one of the guide pin clips holding the license plate light housing on, but the screws line up just fine. Thanks a lot for the excellent video!
Really useful, thanks. Just experienced the same issues with my S40, going to try and fix it today whilst we have a little sunshine left here in the UK!
Great video, very simple instructions, I'm having same issue with my daughter's 2007 s40 2.4i. I'll be disassembling trunk to do evaluation. I'll give you an update when I finish . Thanks
Thank you for sharing this information. Had similar issue and found 4 wires torn. Had no lock, trunk light, license plate lights and trunk lid sensor was mulfunctioning.
Great video just purchased a harness for the 2009 Volvo S40. Just curious did you happen to make a video of how you put the harness back in the car? I know everything gets reversed. Thanks
Here's another version of the trunk malfunction, that happened to me, and it is pure weirdness: Trunk won't usually open, occasionally worked. but when you hit the key on the remote to unlock it, the rear lights flash (As they are supposed to). Dismantle everything, can't find the problem. Try jumping the wires, works fine. Take the switch out of the vehicle, (momentary type), seems to work OK on continuity test, press it, multitester gives continuity. Assemble everything, no good again. What happened?... Well, the switch got some water in it. So when it's 'off' (Normally 'open type switch') it shows about 300 ohms of resistance- should be infinite-sooo… apparently, that's enough conduction to give a little amperage to trip the relay circuit board, (Located under the glove compartment.) The car literally did not 'know' that the trunk was locked- no way it the relays could 'cycle' correctly. Replaced a 'functioning' switch, everything OK.
I had to crawl into trunk from behind seats, remove the carpet covering to trunk lid then disconnect the plug and supply power to the latch. Furthest left pin is power, second one next to its right is ground.
That was one of the most well done instructions videos I have ever seen on TH-cam. Thank you very much!

Thankyou for your post. I now know how to fit my new harness before I'm laid in the back of my car

Very good info! I will try that on my S40-06! Thanks!
Good descriptive video. Thank you.
This video is amazing! Great job!
You're a life saver! 👍
2:01 your “molding” is actually called a trunk lining. Good video.
If you wait too long, the trunk might not latch either. I had to use a bungie cord to hold it shut the day before my new harness arrived.
Thanks bro. Great video🙏✌
In similar case I had a problem with wires from cabin to trunk button. The wires were broken in particular points. after renovation problem has gone
This is great video...thanks!

What is the part number? I need it to stop by my dealer and buy it.
Very good thanks
TY 🤠
How did you open a trunk. Since it is not an american model and it does not have a child safety string ? Great video btw.
Mine is also without child safety string, did you solve this?
I had to crawl into trunk from behind seats, remove the carpet covering to trunk lid then disconnect the plug and supply power to the latch. Furthest left pin is power, second one next to its right is ground.
Great video
Do you have the parts number?
Bring your car's VIN to the dealer to make sure you get the correct part---good luck!
thanks you
HOW DO I OPEN THE TRUNK WITHOUT THE CHILD SAFETY STRING?😔😔
thx
Try unlocking the glove compartment ... it's an anti theft feature .. there electronicly synced.. so if its locked the truck won't unlock
I wish I could get mine open no emergency pull on the inside 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
I hate this car.
