This is the best tasting gau you will ever eat. All commercial gaus are just plain and bland. This gau that I make in the instant pot only takes 2 hours. Some people cook it for 30 minutes but that's because its a real small bowl/dish. So it's up to you! To see if the gau is done and if it's firm, poke it with a cake tester and if it comes out clean then its done. This recipe uses coconut milk and coconut to give it more texture and richness. Once you try this, you'll never go back any other recipe. This is a secret that I've been perfecting for over 40 years.

I haven't had gau since I was a teenager and we moved away from Hawaii to California. So glad I found your channel so I can make it for my kids all the way out here in Columbia, Missouri :) Mahalo!

Great, I make it every year, the family loves it. My sister-in-law used to send it to nieces in the east coast. Sometimes it molds but they just cut it away.

Aloha, gonna try this again, this time will line the pot with 3 layers of ti leaves (I didn't follow instructions last time, what a mess) and mix up half of the batter to 3/4 to fill the container- wish me luck! Thanks again for the recipe!
update: So I didn't use ti leaves as mine were all muddy and I didn't want to wash them all so I used a sheet of parchment paper and it worked great - it didn't have the ti/banana leaf scent but it worked just fine, no leaks, nothing stuck and it released easily. It weighed 3lbs 15.6ozs...

I just made your recipe. I cut it in half but still there’s so much batter to cook! I am cooking one in the pot (using my stainless steel rice pot!) and one in the instant pot. Thank goodness I decided to watch this video. I forgot to cover the gau in the instant pot and sure enough when I ran over to put foil on it there was a puddle of water sitting on top!! I was able to take it off with paper towel and cover before it was ruined. 😅

Thank you so much for this recipe. As a Filipino, I love anything rice related desserts, especially with sweet rice flour, and this version is definitely faster than your 6 hour steam version. LOL, Don't worry, your secret is safe with me! I won't tell a soul. 😉

I tried and it came out pretty good. I used a 7" diameter by 1 3/4" deep aluminum pan (couldn't find a deeper pan) and filled it to the inner lip. I put boiling water in the slow cooker, put the pan in and filled the water to the level of the batter. I let it cook on high for about 4 1/2 hours. I also wrapped the lid in an old T-shirt to create a better seal and to prevent any water from dripping into the gau. I also didn't have to add any water.
I also did one in a streamer and this one was a little soft on top because I didn't cover the gau and the condensation from the cover dropped into the gau. I had to spoon out the water and then covered it with foil. It was still edible.
I consider this a success as I've always wanted to make after watching and helping my mother for years many moons ago. The steaming method is more labor intensive as you have to keep checking the water level.
My next endeavor - making jai.
      Kung hee fat choy! 🐲
