I know of one person who did this for cross stitching. I, myself, have never used a grid in the over 40 years I've been stitching but I think it would be helpful for new stitchers.

I always gird my fabric with thread. It was an aha moment years ago 41 years ago and now it's a habit. Plus, it uses up old sewing threads.

There are also heat soluble that disappear with a warm iron. I have used this on the back of the fabric.
