Masterclass di Rudy Royston

Un estratto (10' circa) della masterclass che il batterista Rudy Royston ha tenuto lo scorso novembre presso la Milestone School of Music di Piacenza.

It’s cool hearing Rudy talk about heavy metal and country here.
I’ve seen a lot of Jazz, seen legends from Tony Williams and Al Foster to Lenny White and many more.
Without a doubt though some of the all time greatest music I’ve ever seen was in the basement of the West End in Boulder and Ron Miles Band with Rudy, Arty, Todd and Farrell .
The band would go from a soft ballad to full on heavy metal, tearing the faces off everyone in the room.
A Jazz band with a heavy metal guitarist (Todd Ayers) and a noise guitarist (Farrell Lowe) sounds crazy, and it is, but it was so crazy good, so perfect and non contrived.
I remember Max Roach came to town and my friend ran into him, startled, “Max, what are you doing in Boulder?”
“I’m here to see that cat Rudy ! He’s the greatest! “
And he is, in my mind easily as great a musician as anyone I’ve ever seen.
Swinging, tasteful, brutal, dynamic, thoughtful, aggressive, lyrical…all in one package!
Wish there was some tapes of those West End Gigs!
