  • In this video, I demonstrate how to do the two-point touch white cane technique. This is one of two basic white cane techniques for people who are blind or visually impaired.
This video is meant to be a review of the technique and not a replacement for meeting with an O&M Specialist.

At first it sounds funny to have a visual tutorial for the visually impaired, but it’s a good resource for the aids for blind people who are helping them figure out their new condition (like after an accident) and as awareness for the sighted

As a 10 year blindy, I disagree with a lot of this. First, whenever possible keep your tip on the ground (and use a roller tip, those pencil eraser ones are worthless) so you know what the surface in front of you is. The exception would be in grass, sand or other loose ground. Second, longer cane (mine is 6' and I'm 6'3") is the way to go. I keep mine at my side after getting jabbed in the gut a couple times. With a longer cane you also don't have to sweep as wide to cover your space. Let the tool do the work. I was also taught to step the cane away from each side. As you start a step, your cane is on that leg side but by the time you complete the step it is on the other side. Repeat. Thanks for the instruction and yes, I've had this debate with my O&M instructors too.

I was also taught to keep the handle off center cause if you don't you'll get a cane in the nuts which I've seen firsthand and hilarious as hell.

I actually was taught the old school way which was to keep it off center so as not to jab yourself in the nuts or stomach. I've seen that happen where someone jabbed themselves in the nuts.

Why does my hand hurt when I do this 2 point touch?
