the first time I saw this episode my parents were in the middle of a divorce and it tore me open because my dad always called me his buddy. my dad has become an alcoholic and we had a fight today because he was drunk. I had to rewatch it after that today and it still hurts
Wow, I know you commented a year ago but I hope you & your Dad have sutured both of your wounds. Perhaps that was the only way your Dad could bare the brunt of pain he had to live through? I listen to hundreds of NDEs and they all agree that when we leave this world, all that means anything is God's love & our ability to do that through forgiveness. Nothing else matters. I have 2 lads I've been separated from (but we talk every day & visit when possible) and this story never fails to break my heart open. A story with a dose of realness, gritty and beautifully portrayed, casted, directed and the acting incredibly compelling. Klugman and Mummy were sensational and I'm so glad Netflix has the entire TZ series as this is one of my all time faves. Peace.
Just watched this tonight and I couldn't hold back the tears. Watching Klugman's grief over his son dying made me think of my brother's grief when his 4 year old son died. And not quite a year ago, my brother died (covid) and I have seen my mother's grief of losing her son.
Saw this when it first aired; just watched it again. It's just as powerful. So many of the images and the lines were firmly fixed in my mind. At the time, the line that there wasn't even supposed to be a war in Vietnam seemed poignant but we had no idea of what the war was to become. Jack Klugman was a great actor. I remember many of his performances including one on The Defenders. I met him once when he owned a popcorn store in Westwood. The lines I still remembered work the gun not the jaw, who's your best friend, hey god, I'll make a deal.
One of my all-time favorite episodes of any show ever. I so love my sons & every time I see this episode my heart breaks open. I wish someone could upload this show in it's entirety, but thanks for this little taste.
Jack Klugman, once again, proves to be a versatile actor. Incredible performance added to his long list of performances. AT 90 he's still going strong! G-d Bless...
A noteworthy episode from The Twilight Zone and starring Jack Klugman ( now deceased). An interesting note on the background in creating the episode is noted where a military casualty is mentioned as occurring in Vietnam. Rod Serling originally did not have that as happening there but in another Asian country. A script critic suggested Vietnam to Rod and, if not the 1st, it was one of the 1st tv mentionings of a military casaulty in Vietnam.
Yes, all good choices. Lately I've been watching reruns of One Step Beyond & have gotten a lot more out of it than I did when I was young. It's so cool that they bring in the actual people that the stories were directly relating to at the end of many shows, some of which episodes were mind blowing.
100% agree. All four of Klugman's TZ episodes ("A Game of Pool," "A Passage for Trumpet," "Death Ship," and this one) were top shelf, especially this one. It's so good to know that he's still active, and long may he be.
Yep, it's the late great Jack Klugman, of "Odd Couple" and "Quincy" fame. He starred in four TZ episodes, tying Burgess Meredith in that category. Unlike Meredith, all four of Klugman's episodes were top shelf. The other two episodes were "A Passage for Trumpet," "Death Ship" and "A Game of Pool."
This episode reminds me of my relationship with my father, as I didn't see him a lot when I was young...except that we never went to an amusement park and he didn't hug me or tell me he loved me and didn't make any sacrifices for me...he DID die though....who was my best buddy? Batman reruns on a 9" b & w set....
This episode really hit me in my heart today for some reason I decided to watch this episode I seen almost every episode and I been avoiding this episode because it never cought my attention but I wanted to watch new epesoide short story is that before I watch this episode I was watching ww2 videos and I said wow if my son decides to join the army or marines I would be so proud of him I always wanted to join but because I don't have a high school diploma I cant join and now seeing this video just made me tear up my only son I wouldn't want to see my son dead and I don't know but for some reason It was ment for me to see this video.
Yes< it was the first time .Before this episode I did not know where Viet Nam WAS. It was one of THE top 5 for me. The others being : Walking Distance,The 16 mm Shrine, The trouble With Templeton and Going My Way?
It is called "A Passage for Trumpet." It's from the first season. All four of the TZ episodes that featured Klugman were top shelf, especially this one.
My second 5 Would be :Stop at Willoughby, A Game of Pool. The one with the late Diana Hyland chasing a younger version of herself, Time enough at last and The Ventriloquist.
Yes, Nothing In The Dark is an incredible effort: storyline, casting, & acting. One of my favorites, that's for sure!! Since I'm a Dad, In Praise of Pip never fails to bring me to tears, as well as the family scene in Death Ship & Walking Distance. My other faves: The After Hours, The Ventrioquist, The Trouble With Templeton was epic as well & I loved A Stop At Willoughby. Ring-a-ding Girl, The Howling Man, And When The Sky Was Opened, & Kick The Can. And yours?
The episode you are talking about with Klugman as an astronaut was from the fourth season and called "Death Ship," the only season with one-hour episodes. Actually, Klugman was in FOUR episodes, tying with Burgess Meredith for the most episodes. Unlike with Meredith, all four of his were top shelf, given that "Mr. Dingle, the Strong" was so lame. The other two episodes with Klugman were "A Game of Pool" and "A Passage for Trumpet." And yes, I have all five seasons on DVD. :)
No, I'm pretty sure the one I meant is called The Ventriloquist, although there is another TZ with that same evil looking dummy with an altogether different storyline which was so-so, & who knows?.....that might've been called The Dummy.
Sept. 27th, 1963. This may have been the first mention of Vietnam on national TV. The irony is Pip died there and would have been one of only 100 US soldiers that year, vs. the final count of 58,000. And of course millions of Vietnamese due to JFK, LBJ, and worst of all tricky dicky.
1963 this aired, very strange because only around 200-250 American advisors/civilians had died in Vietnam which is quite a lot before the war started. So I guess that was enough to cause this episodes story. If only they would know what would happen in the years to come. In 1968 every half an hour an American was killed in Vietnam.
My brothers, imo, always hated me... tho I'm not an actor, me n jack klugman, were THE SAME EXACT PERSON, about 3 minutes ago 🥺... I wouldn't want it any other way😉✌🏾💌🙃
THE GREATEST TV PERFORMANCE EVER. RIP JACK KLUGMAN
When I first saw this episode, I couldn't help but bawl my eyes out. Rod Serling really knew how to write a moving story.
This episode broke my heart.
Incredibly moving episode, excellent performance by Jack Klugman.
Jack Klugman, a true television icon! Rest in Peace, good Sir.
You're ten years old again, Pip. Howcome you're ten years old? I always liked that line.
the first time I saw this episode my parents were in the middle of a divorce and it tore me open because my dad always called me his buddy. my dad has become an alcoholic and we had a fight today because he was drunk. I had to rewatch it after that today and it still hurts

I understand. I hope you and he found solace.
Just watched this tonight and I couldn't hold back the tears. Watching Klugman's grief over his son dying made me think of my brother's grief when his 4 year old son died. And not quite a year ago, my brother died (covid) and I have seen my mother's grief of losing her son.
very strong performance by Klugman in this one.
This episode was a very early reference to the Vietnam War when few in the viewing audience really knew much about what was happening there.
I lost my 20 year old son 7 years ago and it hurts to watch this now.
Tim Cobos, I’m sorry for your loss. No parent should ever have to feel that anguish.
I'm so sorry.
Saw this when it first aired; just watched it again. It's just as powerful. So many of the images and the lines were firmly fixed in my mind. This is Jack Klugman's best performance ever.
RIP
A child is smiling today.
Indeed your prayer

Love this episode!
One of my all-time favorite episodes of any show ever. I so love my sons & every time I see this episode my heart breaks open. I wish someone could upload this show in it's entirety, but thanks for this little taste.
The Character of Max was one of his most enduring roles and the most supreme form of acting. A great talent and the most of a wonderful men
"The heart of a father is the masterpiece of nature."

Correction: The heart of our Father is the masterpiece and author of selfless love. - a dad.
This hit me in the feels...
This epp makes me cry everytime
Lond distance call makes me 😭😿
Same here, friend. Same here.
@@Scripturegirl. Ditto
The father's plea over his boy's toy telephone destroys me in that one.
This episode was on MeTV, 4-8-24. The story still makes me emotional as I am a father with one son.
This episode broke me

RIP, Jack.
I will always remember you in the role of Max here, the man sacrifices himself for his son out of love.
Wait a minute! This Pip kid is the same little kid that turned a man into a Jack in the Box in the Twilight Zone episode: It's a Good Life.!!!
Yep,it's Bill Mumy.
He also plaid the boy in another very moving TZ episode, "Long Distance Call."
Great child actor
@@sidv192 He is, and by all accounts he's a very nice guy now that he's well into late middle age.
As you'll note, when I wrote that comment 6 months ago he was alive and well. He was and always will be a fine actor.

turns out my kid remembers watching this in the TZ marathons...

RIP Mr Klugman
Is Pip supposed to be the same character with the supernatural power from the episode It's a good life?
I say so. I noticed too
He’s the same actor.
The episode you are talking about with Klugman as an astronaut was from the fourth season and called "Death Ship," the only season with one-hour episodes.

Just do what I did and get the entire series on DVD.
It's also now available on Blu-Ray.
This may be the greatest tv performance ever. RIP Klugman.

Would you mind providing the year!! What is it with people these days. Details are unimportant.
... and they forgot to mention Jack Klugman's passing at the Emmys last year!
They don't make shows like this anymore. They don't make people like Jack Klugman anymore-MAsh
This one was ok. It didn’t affect me like others. I give credit to Serling, however, for bringing attention to the coming disaster that was Vietnam

sounds like aing off of last airbender
I think u mean the dummy.
this first aired, before the President was murdered, before the War escalated.(no one knew where this chapter in history was headed.)
The secret societies (JFK tried to warn us about) did.
