Of course at this point, I'm such a fan of you and your philosophy, you might be able to start shredding and playing drop C riffage and I'll totally jump on board, but your advice just hits me more than any other youtuber I watch. There really is just not many, if anybody saying hey, don't beat your self up, slow down, embrace the pentatonic box. I was stuck in it for 20+ years and then starting learning how to get out, but you helped me realize, I didn't need to abandon it. At this point, its still so much easier for me to sound vocal and melodic when I'm staying in key or just playing pentatonic, than if I play the changes. Maybe one day I can go in between all of it fluidly and stay melodic but for now, I'm happy with where I'm at and just enjoying the journey and making music!

I'm not very far into it yet, but it's fantastic so far. It's perfect for someone like me with gaps in their playing knowledge. I love the parts about slowing down and changing the way your brain works. This is exactly the approach I've seeking for 20+ years. Instructors who answer questions like, "Oh, you just do it like this: . See?" No, I don't see. Well-placed expletives are a core feature of my own teaching philosophy. But so everything in this lesson comes as a relief and makes me want to play. I'll stop worrying so much about developing a more intense vibrato! Thanks, Captain Eric.
Great point about too much emphasis on speed. Way too many young players equate high speed with skill. Then when they have a difficult time reaching whatever breakneck speed they envision, they give up. I have to always say to myself, "slow down!" It can make all the difference.

Dude! This is so helpful, I love thinking of the changes in a solo but sometimes it distracts me from my flow cuz a lot of the solos i dig don’t follow changes. It’s good to use them occasionally but not relying on them sounds like a happy medium ❤

Yeah, going to local blues jams, I often run into the idea of players hitting these lighting fast solos and licks and kinda making it a show about being the fastest player or the flashy player. I have to reminder myself that its about the vibe (the room, the song, and the overall purpose of the jam) and i'm hear to have fun. If the song requires a little quick lickage then I play fast but it's all about serving the song.
I should've specified - it's something only some students do, usually when they mean to do SRV vibrato. It's just that no one ever showed them the slow way.
This is a great video full of solid advice as always. At the risk of being pedantic, ahem, your solo example IS playing the changes, just not in an obvious way. Hitting extended chord tones is still playing the changes

In the 90's, the dreaded shreddy 90's in the middle of fan girling Holdsworth et al I made a decision to slow down, pick every note and deliberately choose notes in a bid to de sloppify my playing and a HUGE part of that was to slow my vibrato also and also to de-SRV it, so it's softer and less exaggerated. Not to diss Holdsworth (still love his stuff) or SRV or anything really, but yeah plus one for finding your own vibrato "voice". Currently fangirling over Chris Forsyth :)

Not playing fast is my badge of honor. I don't think I ever heard Gilmour, Richards, Lou Reed, Mike Campbell, George Harrison, or Phil Manzanara shred. The only guitarist I come across regularly that shreds is Marr and I won't even tackle Smiths music due to the string skipping repeating flurry of arpeggios by Johnny.
I think the sick of the box thing is legit when someone is sick of having less options, but you can do tones with nothing but major and minor pentatonics. And those are almost always going to be the most common note choices anyway even when folks are thinking about playing through the changes.
I Just listened to your album “Bundle Up”, it’s great stuff man!👌 And was thinking if you could talk about how to write cool and interesting parts for other instruments like drums, bass, or keys for us guitar players. Cheers, and happy new year!

Playing to the changes is just one method to get there or discover new "words and phrases" that can be part of satisfying melodies. That's what I've been finding of late while trying to play to the changes on the simplest of Blues songs. The pentatonic boxes, or even just little root-to-root pieces of them, are still my home base. Let that sh*t go! Ha!
Alternative opinion: skronk vibrato is a fantastique 👨🏻🍳 spice in more 'angular', expressionistic 👨🎨 styles. Think Tom Waits, surf music or, like, very angsty southern goth (or whatever you'd call that music in 90s independent films)

Improv (solo) isn't "All the ideas as fast as possible!" Improv (solo) is "One idea, expressed in very minute detail and explored on many sides" It should be approached like composing a song, but you do it on the fly...
That's actually a good idea! Sometimes student get worried that if they miss a few days they'll lose skills they gained. I think it's nice to take little breaks. Aaaand I do think any engagement/comments/likes/shares helps!

Not calling out the fret numbers!!! THANKS, that drives me bonkers. Hearing and seeing is plenty. When guys learned solos off an album, the song wasn't calling out fret numbers. Verbal tabs are junk!
