  • Something new and interesting to open with you today - it’s a little bit different, a little bit special, and it’s inspired by Australian native flora 🌸. I’ve bought a monthly yarn club box from Birdhouse Fibre, an Australian independent yarn dyer. What do you think? Would you be interested in a monthly box like this instead of a traditional crochet box? It’s expensive but it offers something a little different from the crochet boxes I’ve seen. I wouldn’t keep something like this going all the time but it’s lovely to try something new. I held off on publishing this video because the little green sheep was peeking out from the background and after confusing people once already on their hunt for the green sheep, I thought I’d better hold this one back until the give away ended. I have some other boxes on the way as well, so if this myster yarn buying method doesn’t appeal, there will be other new options for you to choose from.

    Hi Wheelie I’m so pleased you gave this the thumbs up 👍🏻. I’ve been purchasing this since January and thoroughly love is colours and uniqueness. I’m a sock maker at heart and thoroughly love it. Can’t wait to see what is on offer for next year.

      Hi Amanda - I’m glad you like it too!! 🥰The yarn is just so beautiful and soft isn’t it? I totally get that it’s not everyone’s price range but if you can justify the expense it’s like discovering something a little bit magical and precious. To me the colours feel so Australian, she captured the swamp bottlebrush perfectly. I buy a lot of budget yarn, I loved that this was so different. I hope we’ll find out soon what next year’s theme will be!

    The yarn is stunning, expensive but stunning. However the dyer probably spent a lot of time and effort on it and it’s nice to see crafters getting decent money for their work. So often people will only pay a pittance for something you have spent weeks making. I’ve seen a lot of crochet you tubers buying the hand dyed mini skeins and rarely do I see them do anything with them. They all ask “what will I make with these” and no one seems to have the answers. WA has the best wildflowers. I went on a wildflower trip with my totally blind cousin and I kept exclaiming and ooing and ahh ing and he stood there with all that beauty around him unable to see anything. When we got back to Perth he said he had had the best time talking to the other people on the tour and he thanked me for taking him. So I really appreciate the beauty of nature and what we humans can do with it.

      I wish I’d known you when you came over to WA! If you come again maybe we could have a coffee and crochet?
      I love wildflowers. Everlastings are one of my favourite springtime flowers. And native orchids. I don’t get out to wildflowers in situ anymore but my mum brings me little twigs and leaves, blossom from trees, gumnuts, grevillea, even jacaranda blossom - the kind of random flora you don’t often put in a vase because it doesn’t last long, and I get to have that bit of nature inside.
      It was lovely to read about your trip with your cousin. We all experience the world in such subjective ways, it doesn’t surprise me that he enjoyed it, there’s more to it than just seeing the flowers. The feel of being outside and the space around you, the people and companionship… all that good stuff. I’ve gone on a few family holidays where I travel to the place we’re going and then I stay in the room at our accomodation, maybe managing to come into the main room for meals once a day. And I have still loved those holidays because it’s about the people I’m with and they bring the joy back to share with me. Yet for someone else that could be a nightmare. So subjective!
      But RE: this yarn, couldn’t agree more. An individual has spent time making it, bought all the equipment needed, plus all their hours of learning, experimenting, experience. If you want something like this, you need to be able and willing to pay for it. I wish we lived in a world where quality was affordable but that would require a completely different economic system 🤷‍♀️
      With crochet I’m always a little amused when friends want me to go into business. I made a little ‘donut cat’ toy for a friend’s daughter recently and she was super excited at the thought of me making and selling them. Until I explained it had taken me most of a day 😂
      And back to yarn - I think I’m going to use these mini skeins because they’ll match the big one but I’m with you on them in general. I just decided not to get one of the yarn advent calendars for that reason, I just can’t think of a project that I want to make with them. I get that it’s fun to open things… but I want a usable quantity of yarn. Even a single 100g skein can be difficult to use as it’s not enough for much other than a beanie!
      Keep an eye out for the postal echidna… 👩🏻‍🦼

      I’m going to wind it up into a cake and do some experimenting - the colours are so interesting!! Maybe a shawl?? Or even a soft beanie? 🤔 I think I’ll just have to try a few different ideas until something looks right. It’s so special I want to make something that shows off the colours, and sometimes that means using fancy yarn for a very simple pattern, so it’s all about the yarn. It’ll be fun regardless, it’s nice to have decision with no wrong answers 😉❤️👩🏻‍🦼

    It’s a interesting box, colours are nice unusual to get soap in a crochet box, usually it’s always something to do with crochet, so that’s a plus I would try it once but undecided if I would buy more than once. ❤

    • @wheeliemadeitcrochet
      @wheeliemadeitcrochet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Susan 😊 I rather like that you can just buy this one occasionally rather than having to sign up. It definitely helped me decide to buy it, I hate having to pay for the next one before I’ve decided I liked the first!! The colour is so vibrant and interesting which is a plus but it also is limiting, you wouldn’t want too much like this - picking the right project for it will take a bit of time and thought. I wouldn’t want to have it every month, perhaps a couple of times a year would be perfect for me.
      I last three boxes I’ve opened have included soap!! Clearly it’s the new thing?? 🤨👩🏻‍🦼

    Beautiful yarn but it's not much yarn for the price. I would like to know what can you create with such a small amount of yarn. Would you be able to order more of the same color if needed ,thank you for sharing this.

    • @wheeliemadeitcrochet
      @wheeliemadeitcrochet  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Arnice - I don’t think I’ve ever paid this much money for such a small amount of yarn before… but I can see that the yarn is priced at its value, it’s hand made and high quality. But I definitely couldn’t justify buying much of something like this!! I’m intending to make a beanie and matching fingerless mitts. I suspect I’ll make quite a simple pattern, because the yarn itself is so beautiful. Sometimes with really interesting yarn it actually looks better with a really plain stitch. But even as I’m typing that, I know I’ll find it difficult: I *want* to use a complex stitch pattern because having spent all the money, I feel like I should also make something complicated with it - so we’ll see. I think that some of the dyers market their yarn clubs at knitters - I think that a lot of knitters use the yarn to make socks… I’d rather wear something this pretty on my head though 😉
      In terms of getting more of it, different dyers set different rules. This particular one, Birdhouse Fibre, has said that it’s a one off, you can’t get this colour again and it was never available outside of the mystery club. I’ve looked at quite a few similar yarn clubs run by other dyers and some of them sell some extra of that colour yarn after the yarn club has been distributed, so you could get more if you liked it. Some are more flexible with quantities, so you can order up to 600g of yarn if you know you’d like to make something bigger (of course the price tag is rather scary at that point) - and that particular club also puts up an image ‘mood board’ so you have an idea of what the colour will be. 😊Wheelie

      @@wheeliemadeitcrochet I’m pretty sure there would be gemstone and crystal subscription boxes, and with the rock tumbling fans out there, it’s only 1 step more to gravel!
      But I’ll stick to my yarn boxes… omg there are some amazing mystery and advent yarn boxes out right now from all the Aussie indie dyers… I was just looking at one tonight that has 12 mini skeins … and there is a My Little Pony mystery box…

    • @aditurtle
      @aditurtle ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wheeliemadeitcrochet 😭 No, I just can’t justify… both the price when I don’t have a project in mind (I already have too many in my mental queue!), and I don’t have the space for a larger yarn stash.
      I feel that some projects are about the pattern, others are about the yarn and I would need to find the right project within my skill level to show off the beautiful colours.
      And the My Little Pony mystery box is at rainbowsandsprinkles.com.au but do with that link what you will… 🤣

    • @wheeliemadeitcrochet
      @wheeliemadeitcrochet  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aditurtle Thanks for the link! 😃 I can’t believe they do a ‘gin and yarn’ club!! That’s a different combo. I hadn’t realised there was enough variety in gin to send a different one each month 😮🍸. I’ve been browsing different advent sets on and off today… and finally, like you, my commonsense vetoed it for so many reasons. All those tiny skeins. What on earth would I make with them anyway? And all the winding… 😬. When I actually thought about what I’d do with the yarn after opening all those gorgeous little parcels, I couldn’t come up with much that appealed. There are pattern ideas around but nothing leapt out that I want to add to my (overly long) project list. I’d rather buy a full skein or two (or better… a cake or ball, save me from winding) and make something I actually want to make. Maybe next Christmas 🤷‍♀️ It’s a lot of fun to browse anyway… and window shopping is free 😊👩🏻‍🦼
