I absolutely LOVE the way you present "junk" journals. You bring a great deal of class to your teaching. I agree with you... it is absorbing and "a thing of joy!!!" I don't even want to call these anymore, "junk journals".... I see them as treasures. I love the passion as much as you do.... I think not seeking perfection is one of the most important things. This is what has been stopping me from getting started. I think that my work won't be good enough. I have realised in the past few weeks, I have been thinking that I need to just get started and lower my expectations. I have loved watching this tutorial. It's been a great help.

I'm stuck on the term "signature". What does that mean exactly??
A signature is a collection of papers which form a chapter in a book. It's a really old term dating back to the days here in England when individuals creating the pages of a book literally signed each page. In junk journaling we choose how many of these signatures we want, ie, how thick we want a journal to be.... Does that make sense??👍😀🥰

I love your take on giving a journal a name. I think it puts you in a box. I have just come to call all of my journals, journals. Whether they are truly junk journals, art journals, altered or deconstructed books, digital journals, or paper pack journals. I simply love creating all kinds of journals for all kinds of reasons. So, I stay out of the politics of what journals are. When people start labeling things, it causes division. They are all journals of one kind or another. So for me, I just call all of my works journals and am happy with that. If other people have a problem, that is on them.
With all of that being said, Joie, I love your style. It is very organic and very calming. :-)

I'm 26 and don't have mamy people around me and most videos about junk journal ,although really usefull, make me feel like i have to spend money to by lots of rints and tools and stuff to begin cause i really don't have "the old things already around" or post card or idk thrift shop or anything of this nature! I've been into junk/art/.. journaling for years and neber dared to start them as every video i watch, i don't have most things in them or they don't come out good as i'm bot really an artist or whatever but videos like yours give me courage to try again as you simplify it and don't make a strong niche about them, what they're called or what should be used specially as younger generations just began working so can't really spend much and don't have time on hand either i even have to journal on the go so yeah thank you and all the people like you who share your struggles and thoughts on the beginning and dont gate keep journaling !

I love love love how you talk about starting smaller, finishable projects!! As a creative, it's easy to get carried away will all my "inspirational" ideas, and I have a lot of projects I want to start.
Using a one signature journal is a great idea to get you started, but also not overwhelmed. We often feel we want to finish a project, but can get distracted by new ideas. Lol I'll be taking a page out of your book on that one 🥰

Nothing is wrong it is all about creating a space for myself where I just enjoy being creative. Friends ask my what the PURPOSE is of spending time making junk journals. I am SO happy I clicked on this video! I love the look of junk journals and I'm working on my first "real" junk journal. I've been so confused about what should and should not go in it and how it is supposed to look. Your simple definition of "made from lots of different otherwise discardable supplies" has given me an entirely new way to look at it! I'm so happy and inspired now to finish my first one and start another one. You've removed a lot of fear from my mind when it comes to junk journaling. I'm not a newbie but enjoy your videos. Especially the shorter videos.
Your J.U.N.K. mnemonic is great. Especially the 'K' - for Keep the momentum going - although I got off of FB, again...takes too much time away from my projects and fun artwork.
I DO think the names are important - especially for beginners.
In my mind: an Art Journal is not a Glue Book is not a Junk Journal is not an Altered book. All have different purposes (at least for me, as I sometimes teach and host workshops). But I agree with you that each book can have elements of the others. Glue book is my all time Fave thing to do - gluing is inspiring and relaxing - it's the easiest, too.
I've been on this journey since I started scrapbooking in 2001. Some of my 'art' journals have sold, too! One time, another artist looked at my chunky, mini-art journal and was immediately enamored of it - I was in a gallery admiring HIS artwork. Within seconds, it turned into a trade - he traded his $500 piece for my [not-yet-priced] mini-book without batting an eye.
I was in shock for a week :-)
I usually start my mini-journals (3"x4") by rounding the corners of each page, then binding with a 1" twin O-ring binding machine. [I use both brands: The Cinch, and the Bind It All]. Then I tie various 8" ribbons onto the binding. As I work on the book, I like to 'fondle' the ribbons?! I prefer the wire binding because I want all the ribbon chaos...
My fave papers to use as bases are maps, foreign dictionary pages, used notebook paper glued back to back [with YES! Paste], and pages from old paperback novels. Usually my next step is to put 3-5 different washi strips on EACH page.
I agree with you that this is a fun hobby! You've inspired me today (Saturday). I'm going to my studio right now!!!

You know the names have made me stumble for starting. I don't see myself as someone who journals in the traditional sense, I don't write or do a page regularly. I'm from an oil painter background and since developing a condition have moved more to cards and making albums. I'm now just playing and experimenting and happy I don't have to give my varied creativity a name as I feel it boxes me in which defeats the purpose. Thank you for this and for your tutorials 😁💖

I certainly did enjoy your video! I am a newbie on junk journaling and mixed media! We do tend to criticize our work at times. I am trying to break that habit. I love all your journals as they are beautiful! I will check out your other play lists. On a different note...the color of your craft room is so gorgeous! I had my dining room that color for 12 years and finally decided to let it go. It was hard as the light in there was so cozy and warm at the dinner table but now it is a neutral. Ok. Really inspiring video! I am just beginning to play around with junk journals, so this is really great timing. I like to use mostly "junk" papers to make mine, though a few new items to embellish still fit my take on junk journals. I don't think it really matters what they are called, as far as the creative aspect goes; just do what inspires, right? So I’ve bought 3 books that have a hard cover. Could I use these books? By maybe gluing new pages on top of the already existing pages? What about should I pull out the pages and just use the binder?

Very lovely journals. I cringe when I hear “junk” journal, junk takes away from handmade journals. They are far too nice for that term to be used. As another person who commented “handmade”, collage or ephemera journal would be more becoming and worthy.

Question kinda out of context, but do you or anyone else know the most efficient/ least expensive printer to use for digitalis? I’d love to use them in journaling, but it is so expensive to print them out!!

Great question... I'm not an expert but you are correct. I believe what I use isn't intended for super longevity, you might want to specifically find acid and lignin free papers and inks. It's a great question, I'm sorry I'm not much help. I'll do some research now you've asked it.....
I tried making a couple of journals for relatives but they really need embellishments.
I have one old book that I will NEVER use as an altered book due to its historical value

You are an inspiration to me. I have always been a paper / junk / tag / envelope collector but I never knew I could actually put those items somewhere. I have also loved to doodle, have always loved paint, but always felt so much anxiety because I can't draw a straight line, and I got bad marks in school in Art. But you have allowed me to develop and encouraged me to paint, and draw, and glue... thank you so much and a lot of love from Missouri.

Thank you for this video joie I love making tags n pockets and everything to do with paper. I love journals and stationary but I don’t use a journal to write in every day, I just really enjoy making them it might seem silly just to make it to give it away but it’s the creative part I enjoy. I don’t think it matters at all what they’re called maybe we should call them joy journals instead of junk journals ❤️

I like Joy Journal a lot ..a lot better than junk journal.. in fact that sounds like something others could grow in their own joy in life as they focus on what they find joyful. Possibly help with depression etc.
Definitely Suzy we could all do with some joy in our lives especially now. Maybe looking through pages we have made with things that bring us joy, will actually bring us joy in doing so. I really do prefer Joy journals to junk journals ❤️
