Great review, common sense and informed and explained critical thinking is very welcome! Panasonic seem to be a**holes regarding their relationship to TH-cam reviewers that won't kiss their a*s in the reviews, according to the recent very good of Gerald Undone, on the hype regarding the photo-crippled S9. If that camera had at least an electronic first-curtain shutter (like Sony a7C, Canon R8), and a flash, it would also have been a great photo camera. Now it's a video camera that is also crippled on the video side - the Sony a7C can do 2h50mins of 4k video without overheating in many situations! - and critically crippled on the photo side, despite having some standout features that would have made it a strong competitor even on the photo side, despite lack of EVF.
Great Video as always! Keep bringing it! I'm too entrenched in Sony to buy another brand, but do enjoy seeing what other brands bring. This would be a pass for me if I was in the market for a new camera.
Great design, looks like a photo camera without being one. Acts like a video camera without being one too. Too low res sensor and no EVF is the deal breaker for me.
What are the benefits? Feel like people have a small 1500 camera already... in their pocket. I was hoping for a better designed, and slightly smaller S5. We'll see what happens next year.
This looks like a fun camera step up from smart phone photos and maybe even an EDC camera. Like you, I kinda like it, even with all the flaws... I'll. wait a while
Yeah but as an S5ii owner I will get this as an EDC camera to take out and use for youtube and Instagram. This camera is a great camera for non camera junkies.
This one could have been great with basically no compromises if it had a m43 sensor. But stuffing a FF sensor into something that is desperate to be compact is absurd. Put a reasonable lens on it and it will be as big as any other FF camera. And just look at their G9M2 - fabulous m43 camera - ironically in a FF housing!
I don't think their are enough creators that will even buy it. It should have a viewfinder and a mechanical shutter with a hotshoe. Then creators might buy it. Some creators will want a flash at times.
same thought here. I was so exciting with this camera until the day the camera released. I sold fp-l for this and now I'm thinking about getting the fp-l back again. lol.
I totally agree with your assessment. This is a great camera for some people. But for me is a disappointment, because it is only a few additional features short of being absolutely amazing. It is so frustrating because I can’t see myself buying it ‘as is’. My wish list: - Remove the artificial video time limits - Weather sealing (my concern is mainly sand at the windy beaches that surround me and the inevitable dirt and dust experienced during travel) - Hot shoe - I agree with your comments about the missed opportunity - Hot shoe EVF accessory -Headphone Jack - I could probably live without this though. I’m OK with no mechanical shutter. I’ll cop that for the size trade off. The grip accessories will address the ergonomics. The 28mm lens is bizarre but oh well. The 18-40mm will be cool though. I’d actually like a feature packed MFT version. Love your ‘smoking’ gown! So cool!
Panasonic has been on of my favorite camera manufacturers since the early M43 days. I really question them after this stupid move. The G9ii and S5ii are solid. This is straight junk. Please don't continue to go in the wring direction Panasonic.
Why is it junk? Its a stripped down S5II in a compact body, if you add all the complaints back, its just another S5II in the same big body. Why would they launch the same camera? People want smaller cameras, thats the trend nowadays. They want something better than their smartphones, but not too expensive and big as the Sony A7 series. Smartphones are getting better and expensive as well so another MFT or APSC won't do it. I don't understand why people want this to have everything, when clearly they want a flagship or mid-tier camera. This is at most an entry-level full frame camera. Its like wanting a motorcycle to have airconditioning, rain wipers, sunroof, and a reverse camera.
The biggest mistake of Lumix S9 is that it should be 12 million pixels instead of the useless 24 million pixels. The current cameras body design are good for photo only. If you need to take good video, buy yourself a DJI Pocket 3.
So you want to travel to Mars in a bike? To have a FF camera so small you need to have good thermal management simply a question physics. You are making a video where all the points you are discussing were covered by those who went to Osaka, Japan and could talk to the engineering department. Look at all those video and you will find the answer of this choices. Which videographer uses a flash to make video?
you do know that Panasonic sells an XLR adapter that connects to the HOT shoe right? I just happen to own that accessory and used it on past panasonic bodies, audio is kind of an important in video.
Yes. Time limits. Did I say time limits? The reason I bought Panasonic in the past was for no time limits. I'd never buy a time crippled camera. Take note Panasonic. What are you doing? Look at the competition.
Panasonic rented the "Canon Cripple Hammer"

At least, now the panasonic micro 4/3 lineup has its revival 😅
1080p time limit is absurd. This camera is just going to drive people nuts.
Damn you. I'm looking for people to talk me out of it and you agree with me, kind of terrible, kind of want it LOL.

At least your being objective with your take, unlike certain youtubers...
All the TH-camrs got a nice airplane ticket to Japan. It's disgusting
Great video, I totally agree.
But why are you doing it In your dressing gown?
it is cold, I like to keep warm
Flat cameras are only good with small lenses.
A pancake lens on my S5II? A travel camera with all the features I need.
If you’re not going anywhere with humidity above 20% or dust
What are the benefits? Feel like people have a small 1500 camera already... in their pocket. I was hoping for a better designed, and slightly smaller S5. We'll see what happens next year.
Have you ever used it?
My bet is that they have a deal with Leica - they couldn't make the camera we all wanted - the lumix exchangable lens version of the Q.
The most adequate review, I agree with the author 100%
This looks like a fun camera step up from smart phone photos and maybe even an EDC camera. Like you, I kinda like it, even with all the flaws... I'll. wait a while
You can buy a second hand S5ii for less money.
S5ii smokes this thing and the grip will fell 100x better.
Yeah but as an S5ii owner I will get this as an EDC camera to take out and use for youtube and Instagram. This camera is a great camera for non camera junkies.
will be great for a street cam, however, having such narrow use case by definition is for camera junkies 😁
Is that some kind of magic robe? :D

All good points!

The only reason why I watched your video was because of the robe. 😅

Lol they did this on purpose so that the can sell the S9x or S92 with all those features typical lumix strategy

all those guys from sales channels not focus on
be sure to click on every single one of my affiliate links 😂
@@CharlieVN yep, all to Japan, tell same story.

If it was water proof, it wouldn't even be a good action cam.
🤣🤣🤣
"It might not be for you"... or anybody
I think it was designed by the accounts department
Good point!
Omg the grip is the worst!!!
I'm glad you see it too. I had a hard time holding my XT20. Got rid of that fast. I hate terrible grips. I won't buy a camera like that.

Don't be so hard because you don't received a review unit... 😅
nevermind the review unit, I want a trip to japan!
@@CharlieVN It sure would have been worth it.
Who’s buying this to film over 15 minutes straight? A bunch of babies 👶 guys want a arri in an iPhone body
Ах ты хитрый лис 😃😃😃 Согласен с каждым словом. 👍👍👍

I get that they are trying to segment, but 1080p limit is kind of inexcusable
It's a garbage camera
S9 is trash.
I guarantee it will sell better than the S5ii/x
