  • Check out how we paid $8,112 towards debt in 3 months! The Debt Avalanche method is working for us so far, and in this video I share an update on the debt avalanche method. I also detail ways we saved money in our budget to save enough money to pay the credit card and pay off one of our cars.
    Using the debt avalanche vs the debt snowball enables us to pay the debt off faster and with less money. However, the debt snowball provides psychological wins that spark motivation to keep on paying off debt.
    We have credit card debt, consumer loan debt, car loans, and a mortgage. We had a good jump start to the year and positioned to start paying off debt quickly. Paying off debt fast is so motivating!
    This is part 3 in the Minimalism and Money Series:

    Love that what you tracked is actually doable for the average person! I’ve watched SO many budget videos where people were spending $500 a month on subscriptions that they weren’t aware of then had some massive snowball. Yeah....nope. These are actually things I can track! I’ve done a lot of them but never thought of tracking it. Love that idea!

      Hello guys, I was introduced to Fixmyfinance01@ gmail com while researching getting late payments removed from my credit report. I was reluctant at first but gave it a try by sending a mail to them. I was very surprised to see the improvement made on my credit report last month. They cleaned my credit reports and even helped me clear my debts, now my credit score is excellent and I got approved for a $15k limit credit card recently

    well done! i honestly cant believe how much you have turned your life around. When i watched the very first video you posted, i really didn't think you would be able to do it.... it seemed like such a big task, i thought you would give up after a couple of weeks. Its so inspiring to see how far you have come and how dedicated you are to it. Amazing how something can start with tidying up a home school room, and become something where you manage to start paying off debt and really change your life style. You seem like such a lovely person with so much dedication, well done on everything you are accomplishing!!!!

    That high interest rate credit card. Every time you make a significant payment you should ask again for a cut in rate.also look at trying to find a lower interest rate credit card that you can transfer it to.if you find one you might want to call them again and mention you're going to transfer the amount to another card unless they will lower the rate. Use a little blackmail. Good luck and congratulations

      When we paid off our debt years ago our credit card would not work with me on the rate so I transferred. I ended up dropping it because of that, I didn't ever want to deal with them again. They say it drops your credit score to cancel them, but it was only a little and was temporary. Free cards drop you after awhile if you never use them anyways so best to just cut them up when they are zero.

    • @rachelh8064
      @rachelh8064 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes!! Transfer that balance to a different company if they wont lower it. You could get a year or more of NO interest to pay it off and pay down that much more of the total debt.

    • @tammychristiansen4033
      @tammychristiansen4033 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      After it’s paid off, I’d use it once a year for one purchase a year and pay it off right away to keep it for your credit score but not pay any interest. 25 years will have a positive impact.
      I know some will say cut it up. I say lock it up in a drawer and use it once a year.

    • @candicewaller403
      @candicewaller403 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed! Transfer to a lower interest card with a promotional no-interest period. Beyond 5-7 years, the length of time the account has been open has a very tiny affect on your overall score anyway (that part of your score is based on the average age of ALL your credit accounts together, and as long as that average is longer than 5 years you're good, 7 is better). Don't let this card hold you hostage.

    Congrats! Last month I made the final payment on my credit card. In 5 years, I paid off 25,000 of credit card debt. I worked 2 jobs, said no to eating out, didn't go on vacation, etc. It's been so worth it though because now my money goes to where I want it to go. I still have my car payment and a little bit on my student loan but those will be paid off within a year. Keep going! It is worth it!

    My husband and boys are in the garage spring cleaning scraping metal for money. Throwing trash out and posting items for sell. We did not go on vacation this spring break saving money. We feel like the spring cleaning is giving us less stress, more money and more space. Please try a credit union or your bank to transfer your credit card debt with them to a lower interest. Remember not to be loyal to a brand but to your money. That money is covering your family. I always used our tax return to catch up on bills and update our home. I've bought new bedroom sets cash, new couches cash, new tile cash, a new needed refrigerator cash, needed new washer and dryer cash. I've paid off cars and paid off credit cards. I do wish we took a few more family trips but bought less materialistic items. We are more minimal now.

    We have kept things in the car -- nutrition bar, liquid nutritional drinks, etc. Helps keep things going until you can get them home and feed them right. Maybe a jar of peanut butter, nutritious crackers, fruit cups might be more realistic with kids. Things that will keep but are nutritious as well. When my kids were little, I often just grabbed lunch meat, cheese and a loaf of bread to make sandwiches on the fly. We would stop somewhere and make the sandwiches.

    Your videos have really inspired me to manage my money more carefully. For example I put away 500€ every month to my savings account. That's about a third of my income in a month, one third is used for rent, electricity etc. and then I use the rest on fuel, groceries and clothes. If anything is left I get to use it as I wish or I save it for future travelling.
    I've also started to only use cash instead of paying for everything with my card. All I use my card for is fuel, simply because it's more convenient that way.

    We also started a debt pay off this year. It started well, but we hit a wall with unexpected medical and dental bills to the tune of $7700 out of pocket. Hello from Australia!
    Really loved the video and found it very encouraging. I have a lot to learn! One suggestion.... you could cut your boys hair. I have 3 boys and my husband and cut their hair monthly. ( it would cost me about 90$/month to have it cut). To be home it is Not my favourite thing. And I don't feel as though I am particularly good at it. But..... it ends up saving me a little over 1,000$ every year.
    It is also not too bad practicing on little boys because they don't yet notice if you make a mistake.... and worse come to worse.... buzz it and try again next month. ☺️
    Enjoy the PA spring! I used to live in south central PA and I miss the spring weather!
    Thanks again,
    🌸~ Katie

    These are great tips! Congratulations on knocking a little over $8k off of your debt. I have never gotten a credit card and I won't do it for this reason. I know myself and I knew that I would end up using it way more then i should have. It's very easily done! So we have always lived by our means. I used to wonder why we weren't able to do all the things that everyone else was able to do even though we made more than them. I finally realized that they had multiple credit cards and that was how they were able to do it lol. Sometimes I have wished that I had one when we were really struggling and the kids needed clothes or something else. But what we ended up doing this year was putting $2000 in the bank and getting ourselves caught up on our bills. Then setting a certain amount out every week just for our bills and actually having a budget. It has helped out sooo much. I love these videos along with your others. I have started becoming a minimalist and I believe that once you start that it's easier to do the same with your money. It's crazy how we over spend on all the shiny things lol.

    Someone else may have suggested this, I'm not running through the comments to see. Have you considered finding a credit card with a lower interest and transferring your balance to that card? Many cards will completely waive your interest for the first couple months and then if you find one lower than 29.99 percent you'll be accruing interest, but it would be less than the current card.

    Do a Balance Transfer. 29.99% is insane. Open a new credit card with like 10-12% interest and transfer the balance from that debt onto the now much lower interest card. I had my mom do this a couple of years ago and she paid it off sooooo much faster. This way you can tell that company to buzz off next month!

    Very impressive! Although I'm nearing the end of my debt story, I think videos like this are important to keep people motivated. Great job with your money decisions. I also like the avalanche approach. Also, what you've done with your house is amazing. That is a massive turn around in a very short amount of time. I get frustrated with my progress and start to think I'll never get there, but you prove that its possible! Thank you for showing your work and process.

    Three cheers to you🎉. Most people pay cash for their day to day here in Switzerland. I used to do the Dave Ramsey cash envelope and it worked great for me too. I now feel comfortable enough to have the "cash envelope" on my phone in form of a budget app which keeps me on track. This gives let's me use my debit card for groceries shopping and the cash in my purse is my personal spending money. The rest sits in the bank to be used as assigned for. No more overspending. I feel more comfortable not caring so much cash with me all the time. Love the video. Looking forward to the next.

    I do the digital sinking fund as well! I have a separate savings account that I put money into for car insurance and utilities because these are not paid on a monthly basis, they are anywhere from 2-6 month charges. It makes no sense taking out cash for utilities when I would just have to deposit it again in order to pay the bill. Im not comfortable sending cash through the mail... and if I was writing a check the money would need to be in the account regardless. I keep a google sheets (basically googles version of excel) document with all my bills and account balances. That way I know that I have put the money into the savings account sinking fund when it has a checkmark next to it. I can just look at that account number and it shows me that I have $X for Thing A and $X for Thing B, etc. It a great idea to keep the money separate too so that it doenst accidentally get spent or "I could just reimburse it later" attitude.

    I am enjoying this series.You are doing amazing on building your life as a minimalist. You look a lot more relaxed.
    I use to feel guilty about eating out. Now I incorporate it into the meal plan. I like having the night off from cooking and cleaning. Here is a hopefully helpful tip: Periodically we review our automobile insurance to see if we can get it less elsewhere. Also to make sure we don't have unnecessary coverage or lower deductibles than what you need.

    My husband and I went through the Dave Ramsey class and when we received the 1,200 stimulus checks we used this extra money plus our tax returns to pay of credit card bills and our cat bill and I too use only cash. But I split up my grocery budget into envelopes and go shopping every two weeks. At the end of the month if we have anything left over it goes towards savings.

You wished for a debt free live and you going to do this in a rate of 8 x 3 months if you keep this up. ( I know there's no tax return the coming months but the thought!) Oh wow, so incredibily happy for you and your family. The relieve is huge is it. That's how I feel, so relieved. And I didn't made those debts. We are powergirls, dear. Yay!

    Great video, Erica! I’m new to your channel and have been binge-watching the series on decluttering. I’m on the same journey you are: paying off debt and working towards minimalism (☺️), though I started out with focusing on debt. I’m down to just a mortgage now (paid off a credit card and car loan - total about $15,000 in 2-1/2 years). I’m older than you 😉 and retired from homeschooling and working part-time, so it wasn’t easy to pay that debt off (esp. with family pressuring me to “go shopping” with them, etc.), but it was so worth it. I’ll be adding $3,000 to my already increased mortgage payment in August, thanks to an inheritance from my sweet dad. The rest of that $ has to go into maintenance on our condo. Sinking funds have changed my life! I keep track of them in a paper notebook. I used to worry and stress thinking we would be in big trouble if we had an emergency, because we only had a couple hundred dollars in savings. When we had a couple thousand, I still fretted. Then I learned about sinking funds. I listed all the future expenses we were facing, listed all 12 plus Emergency in my notebook and divided the $ up, starting with $1,000 for emergencies. I felt so relieved when I got done, even though we didn’t have $1 more than before. Just knowing I had a plan, and there was $ in savings to go toward those expenses gave me so much peace of mind..........Decluttering, on the other hand is a lot harder. That is wearing me out, but it too is worth it! I start and stop with that one, but your videos have got me determined to GET THERE this time. Hubby and I have taken two carloads to the thrift store with another nearly ready. THANKS, Erica, for your inspiring channel!! ❤️🙏🏼🥰

    Great move paying off the car! And I think it's TOTALLY the right move to pay off that crazy 30% interest rate credit card next! After that, I would pay off the 9% consumer loan next. There's not a big difference in the percentage rates between that and the 11% credit card, and it would get paid off so much faster than the second credit card, since you only owe $5000 on it! Then you'd only have two left, and that would feel so much better than three!

    Good job Erica. My goal would be to put all the money to those highway robbers charging 29 % first before the other cards. All I have to say about being debt free is that if i wasn't I would be screwed right now with a broken ankle. Out of work for 6-12 easy the doc said. My boyfriend use to be like. ... you have money in savings... no kidding. Just in case of something like this. I will be using all my sick, personal, vacation time for the next 4 weeks.(already used 2 weeks) After that all the bill money must come out of my pocket. Imagine if I only had a small sinking fund. I wouldn't make it past 1 month with no pay let alone 6 + weeks. Keep up the good work. My other suggestion is to dabble in couponing. I have a few awesome you tubers who can show you how to get many necessary items free or dirt cheap. Start with the easy stuff -toothpaste , toothbrushes, mouthwash and razors. Thank God I coupon hoarded before this accident because we have dipped in my stock pile for paper plates, toilet paper, hand lotion, trash bags, laundry cleaners, household cleaners. You name it. My goal was to stock pile 6 months worth. So after 3 out of work I will have 3 plus months supplies left. This is the thing that has me laughing at the Corona virus toilet paper runners. I already got mine. And for dirt cheap. 😁

    It's not for everybody but consider doing a no spend....time period for you to decide. I have been doing it for three months and it is great. Instead of discretionary money, my husband and I get an allowance of $60 a month to spend on whatever we like...I am a thrifter so my money goes far. That means only necessary spending. I'm going to try for a year but the great thing is that you can do it exactly how you like it.

    Good job. Once you are out of credit card debt learn how to use those cards to make money. Free cash rewards credit cards are great. You use but keep track of what you spend and you pay in full when the bill comes. Take the rewards and pour back to pay any other credit card.

    Erica, I have budgeted my money this way for probably close to 20 years. I started with a notebook ledger and later moved to Excel. (I’ve never turned it into a bar graph though. Can’t wait to “nerd out” and do that now 😅). At times it can feel so cumbersome, but honestly I don’t know how people get through life without a system like this. One note on credit cards- as my husband and I each have a credit card that gives us cash back we often use the card when we know we have the cash to back up the purchase. Then I immediately set the money aside in the bill paying account so that it is there when the bill comes due. It takes a lot of discipline, but then the whole system takes discipline doesn’t it. - Best to you! I look forward to your progress every week.

    Great job! We’re doing the debt snowball. Honestly, either way it doesn’t matter which process you decide to use (avalanche vs. snowball). If you’re aggressively attacking your debt you will save money on interest either way. We use the debt snowball because I love seeing how many debts we have paid off in such a small amount of time. I do love the idea of sinking funds. Keep up the great work!

    We stopped eating out for a long time and saved money. Even fast food is extremely expensive compared to cooking basic groceries at home.

    You could try shifting some of the credit card debt to a 0% card. They usually have 18-24 months interest free. X

    I don't know if you guys us USAA but if you don't you should! As a military family, you should have as many accounts with them as possible as they often have great rates (including intrest free credit card offers to can transfer balance to. Another option they have are low interest rate personal loan to consolidate credit card debt. Pull as much as you can out of that high rate card and pay off what's left aggressively.

    Loved this. And kudos for sticking to the avalanche, which I've tried numerous times but failed. I'm apparently a Snowball kinda person. :) I am really enjoying your updates, pls keep them coming!

    Rewatching this video in June. I wonder how the avalanche has been going these next three months. I would love to see another progress update soon.
