Many may wonder why many Thai vocabs similar to southern Chinese dialects. Thai (Tai or Dai) is part of Tai-Kadai language family originated in modern day Guangxi and northern Vietnam. Zhuang of Guangxi and Dai of Yunnan are closely related to Thai. Not only numbers but 70-80% of Tai lexicons are very similar to Chinese and other Sino-Tibetan languages. Most people with a background of speaking Southern Chinese dialects would have almost no problems with these Thai numbers even if we haven't learn them because they just sound really similar. In Southern Min (閩南語) / Taiwanese (臺語): 一 jit 二 li / nueng 三 sa 四 si 五 gor 六 lak 七 chhit 八 poei 九 gao 十 tsap In Cantonese: 一 yat 二 yee 三 sam 四 sei 五 ng 六 lok 七 jet 八 paet 九 gaao 十 sip It is widely believed that the modern-day Thais originally came from what is today Yunnan Province (雲南省) in Southern China - where the ethnic Dai people (傣族) still live - more than 700 years ago. There might have been some interaction between the Thais and the Chinese people which has led to the borrowing of these numbers and a few other words such as 雞 (gai). Linguists who had originally thought Thai, Lao and Hmong was in the same language family as Chinese more than 30 years ago have now debunked this theory. According to the United Nations Organization for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Chinese language belongs to the same language family as Tibetan and Burmese (Myanmar), as well as many other languages spoken in Northeast India, Northeast Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Western China.
Phil Phil Not true. Both the Sino-Korean and Sino-Japanese numerical system in Korea & Japan are used more widely over the Native Korean and Japanese numerical system; there is also a Sino-Vietnamese numerical system but it has largely fallen out of use. Linguists studying Tai-Kadai languages have long debunked any form of genetic relationship between Thai and Chinese; since only the Tai branch of languages has numbers which are similar sounding to the numbers in some Southern Chinese dialects - the Kadai branch of languages (spoken by the Sui, Kam and Hlai/Li peoples) on the other hand have largely preserved their own native numerical system.
