- Coronation Street: A classic encounter between the imperious Annie Walker, landlady of The Rovers Return Inn (played by the wonderful Doris Speed) and her 'indisposed' cleaning lady, Hilda Ogden (Jean Alexander).
Needless to say Mrs Walker sallies forth and wins the argument. A superb script, brought brilliantly to life. RIP Doris Speed - very sadly missed.

And we haven't seen brilliant acting and script writing like that in the street for about 15 years now and never will again ...
Bet Lynch ready to fight there, with Alf Roberts for backup,.
Stick 2 instead 1
Two of the finest soap actors of all time.
Gosh the writing in those days of Corrie was amazing!
RIP Jean Alexander - a fine actress - Hilda was one of the best characters to ever grace those cobbles.
Agree
Richard Chapman Agreed. Also Doris Speed was wonderful as Annie Walker. Both she and Jean Alexander were great adversaries as Annie and Hilda.
the original battle axe............... i would love to have seen hilda and blanche hunt at it or may be even doubling up on some poor unfortunate
They don't make um like this anymore? A joy to watch Annie & Hilda at full belt wonderful
R.I.P Jean much missed by all true fans.
This is got to be one of the best arguments from coronation street to date, Doris Speed with her sharp tongue and a touch of humor. She single handedly managed to criticize and put her in her place with just a few words thanks to her large vocabulary and wit, very fluid in her nature.
"Neither the time, nor the place, to discuss your emoluments" classic line!
"don't come in here bawling like a fish wife !!"
I never knew what the word emoluments meant.I had to look it up on google!
'Don't look exactly at death's door to me. In fact, you look very robust, and you sound it.' I'd love to use that line...
Brilliant delivered her line brilliantly an while pulling a proper pint. She played this character perfectly
WE MIGHT DESCRIBE YOU AS A PROFESSIONAL CLEANER... 😁
I AM A PROFESSIONAL CLEANER!!!!
Good old smug and classy Annie. Corrie legend personified 😂
Jean Alexander - this country's finest character actress of the era; and she created, in Hilda Ogden, one of fictional drama's true greats, to rank with the Steptoes, Tony Hancock, et al.
john larkin completely agree. She was a legend.
its like a ping pong game of verbal abuse..mouthy Hilda left with egg on her face as Mrs Walker holds her refined (all be it smug) dignity..wonderful stuff...Classic Corrie xxx
Jean Alexander was a superb actress. These characters underpin the foundations of Corrie. The current cast owe these actors their futures
Jean Alexander ... the Dame who sadly never was.
...and £2 short you are going to stay". God they don't write scripts like this anymore
Yes - having been brought up with Coronation Street, I still remember that statement, even tho' I was only 5 when I watched it..........
£2 like 2p these days, different worlds apart 😳😨😱😂🤣😂🤣😂
The Golden age of Corrie. I can not watch 21st century corrie - sadly it is now a pale imitation of what was once a powerhouse in British TV drama. Doris Speed and Jean Alexander lived and breathed their characters and delivered the dialogue expertly.
Absolutely wonderful brilliant superb and every actors actresses magnificent example of there art,
Just wonderful
Two legends. Doris Speed was Thatcher with a sense of humour.
Yes, 😁. To think, Doris Speed was a life long socialist and probably despised everything Thatcher stood for in real life. Great actress.
@@Bertie_and_Dot Well Doris used to speak with a Lancashire accent at the beginning of the Street, then she got progressively posher. She was a dyed in the wool Socialist in real life.
Those were the days .. before if filled with serial killers, revenge attacks and general nastiness
it's from 1977, just finished watching it.
Annie Walker was a powerhouse. Sharp as a drawing pin 📌 Nobody persist with bad behaviour in the Rovers after she declared "That is quite enough!" (apart from maybe Elsie Tanner, but some people can't be helped!)
Annie was just enjoying this to absolute pieces, wasn't she, betraying every unkind thought she'd ever had about Stan but couching it strictly in reference to his alleged work for the day, but I'm sure what really, truly, tickled Annie's soul, though she'd never admit it, of course, was the chance to get her digs in against Hilda, too... refined, yet just as catty as the rest of them. Take a lesson, people: this is acting, this is writing, this is sheer TALENT on both sides of the camera, and this has mostly disappeared today. This is sheer brilliance.
Pure comedy gold
Annie and Hilda were such great characters.
The very Godly Mr Ogden!
they looked homely these old episodes.there not the same nowadays
They looked REAL, as opposed to being dolled up to allow the viewers to see glamour where glamour isn't meant to exist.
There is a scene with Annie walker and Hilda Ogden from The Streets 30th Birthday with Cilla Black. It's a clip from 1970..absolutely brilliant!! sums up the relationship and characters of Annie and Hilda perfectly. Superb!
That busybody Hilda was common as muck, always with her airs and graces thinking she was a cut above. I'm glad Mrs Walker treated her with the disdain she deserved.
Messylin I think Hilda suffered from an inferiority complex and was always fantasising about being in a better place socially. She was proud of her working class roots but often felt she (and Stan) were looked down upon by the likes of Annie Walker. Hilda aspired to have what she perceived Annie to have in the way of refinement and intelligence. However, when confronted with her lack of these things by the way of “fancy words” she lobbed them back from whence they came. Annie was a snob, no better than Hilda, except for her posh accent and possibly a better education. Hilda’s intelligence was a street-wise acquisition; and therefore Annie always felt superior.
this is great. i think they may had to of done a few takes for this scene as they look as if there laughing. the smirk on Bet Lynch's face is great too. Alf looks on.
we might describe you as a professional cleaner lol
Awesome
LOL, Oh that Stan, he reminds me of my Dad,
Higher up in godliness. Cleaner 💓
Corrie had some great characters. Ena Sharples, Elsie Tanner, Annie Walker, Martha Longhurst, Minnie Caldwell, Stan & Hilda Ogden, Bet Lynch, Alec Gilroy etc. When they had decent storylines and less of the sensationalist stuff they have now. Not that I watch it anymore. I don't care for it. Same with Emmerdale, modernised & spoiled.
Anie Walker always reminded me of an older Maggie Thatcher, even dressing in blue and patronizing everybody!
dramaticguy Couldn't but agree entirely there. 😁
Poor old Stan, in trouble again
Annie Walker and Hilda Ogden. I will describe Annie Walker as a very posh Landlady of the rovers return and she is one of my favourite characters and I do like Annie Walker and my opinion on Hilda Ogden is she is a very funny character from the 90s and she was known as a very loud character. Hilda and the well-known Elsie Tanner were mostly remembered for arguing as neighbours. I think Hilda is mostly remembered as wearing hair curlers and she was a Fessional cleaner but I think acting has changed since the 90s these days Coronation Street is mostly about relationships and sex and some other stuff but still I think Coronation Street is still a good programme but in the 90s century it was better than today but still it’s a good programme I think.
She was a right snob that Annie Walker.
1:23 Weeeee might discribe you as a professional cleaner. Lol
I AM A PROFESSIONAL CLEANER!!!
Stan is in for it
what year was this?
What year is this
1977 if I'm not wrong
Shame. The script writers are not capable anymore of writing material such as this. Too afraid of offending this one and that one....so basically crap scripts are the result......All soaps are the same..........
Back when Corrie as worth watching. Utter shite now.
Utter Shite , Couldn't Agree More ! Me Sister had it on the Other Day ,and I Didn't recognise anyone,! 😮😮
@@FrankyForster-du8rk I haven’t watched it for over 20years. I did watch the old eps on itv2 ages ago. Throats when it was worth watching. All the old characters Loved it back then.
