Thank you Jean as always for your insights. I had the pleasure of watching two of your videos (was a bit behind) and you demystify a lot of cross stitch "facts/fiction" for us and it is very much appreciated. I have finally completed my first stitch on 28 count even weave (thanks to you) and really appreciated your video on mounting your work. I am glad your foot is healing well. Stay well.
You are welcome! I am a very new stitcher, so I think that I analyze how I do everything and I come up with new ways. Also be sure that the hook on your threader goes facing up in the eye and not facing down, and then your thread is less likely to fall off of it while you’re threading the needle.
Thank you for your discussion about needle sizes in relationship to fabric size. I was beginning to doubt myself after hearing so many Floss Tubers talk about needing your needle to be big enough to "push the fabric aside, so as not to fray your floss". That absolutely would leave a hole you could see - be able to know which hole you put an empty needle in!
When a cross stitch ground cloth is so abrasive as to cause the stitching threads to fray ... well ... I would just have to say, "wash that cloth before beginning and get the sizing out because there is no way cotton or linen cloth should be that rough!"
Since I’m a new-again stitcher, your explanation of threads per inch as opposed to stitches per inch very helpful. And as a long-time sewist, THANK you for clearly enunciating the word selvedge. I hear so many TH-camrs call it sAlvege. I always learn something from every episode, and I appreciate your time!
I made my first garment at age nine (a purple skirt with white rick rack) and grew up in a household where "store bought" clothes were unheard of ... learning about fabric was essential!
Thank you for sharing those tips. I'm back to cross stitch after a 25 plus year absence from it and so much has changed and there was so much I never learned! I wish my life's events permitted me to join the Redwood trip. Maybe next time!
Thank you for such interesting facts. Certainly helps us to stitch happy. So glad your foot is improving. Also really enjoying hearing about your forthcoming trips. Hope you are having a good summer.
Hi Jean, thanks again for another great video. Amazing tip about threading the needle with the hoop end! I used it already while watching you and oh my goodness the thread glided right thru the eye. I really appreciate this community, everyone is so helpful! Take care, Joanne
Glad your feeling better. Thank you for showing the needles I always get confused with the 26 and 22. About the double pointed needles that you mentioned I've tried them there not too bad. Stay safe.
Wow! About the threading tip…thanks for passing along this tip as I didn’t see it in the comments! Always something to learn no matter how many years we have or haven’t stitched! So glad that your recovery is coming along…like your haircut too! 😁 Happy stitching!
Thank you for sharing threading the needle with the loop first, was stitching while watch ur floss tube and I tried that method and WOW it was awesome…thank you and thanks to the lady that shared to you.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🐇
So happy you commented on a FB post about your floss tube channel. I have been working on catching up from the beginning. I have learned so much from you!!
Sunday morning is Jean Farish time for me here in Italy, and I hugely look forward to switching on my iPad and finding you there. A few weeks ago you were held up for some reason. Consternation! This morning another information-packed video, for which many thanks. Glad your foot is on the mend. Every good wish.
Hi Jean, really enjoyed your video, very informative and clear. As a new cross stitcher I appreciate any tutorial that increases my knowledge and understanding of all aspects of cross stitching. Thank you 😝👍🪡🪡 Linda uk
You are always such a wealth of information! You answer questions I didn't know I had, and I so appreciate how much I learn from you. Glad you are recovering well! 💛
Thank you for so much information that you give. You have given me a love for Samplers that I did not expect. I have started even reading about the history of the samplers because of some misinformation some people have about the Samplers. This is because of your teaching. I enjoy Roxie very much and have learned a lot. Again Thanks
I'm with Padma and have often wondered why those who stitch with the loop method tend to thread the two raw ends, into the needle, instead of the loop end (with or without using a threader). Stay safe and happy.
Hi, Jean! My thanks, as usual, for a very informative and entertaining video. I always learn something new from you, and I appreciate the calm, even-handed and clear way your present the information. It was also a pleasure seeing your beautiful America piece in the background! Have a blessed week ahead, and best wishes for continued healing. Meline
Thank you, thank you, for your in-depth explanation of the difference between the fabric, fabric counts, threads, etc. Your explanation to me this week was great and this video made it even clearer. I understand 👍😸 You are awesome Jean.
Jean, I observed that to do a loop start…you put one strand thru the eye of a needle and evened up the ends and made your start…it has always worked and I love it…needle sizes are always important, but in the dyeing process, the fabric might shrink and you would go to a smaller needle if that happens…as always your video’s are full of information…wishing you joy and happy stitching…have a complete recover with your foot…I have not been able to stitch during Covid because I didn’t want to be exposed where they do medical procedures…I will let you know if my surgeon will understand the lens criteria at 40 count linen…it should be interesting…lol❤️
I saw my surgeon yesterday…he said I will have to wear glasses any way because of the strokes 21 years ago(double vision)…and reading…I don’t think anyone had brought up the subject of 40 count cross stitching before…he was sweet about though❣️
Thanks for sharing...I have been using alot of different size Aida lately and some 18 count only need 2 strands and other types of 18 count needs 3 ....it has been interesting trying out threads and seeing what works for me...thanks as always ....glad to hear you ar feeling g better...please take care and be safe
Hi Jean! You said you thought if people subscribed they would be notified of your new videos. Actually they need to do another step and they need to click on the notification bell. You cannot do this on TV when you are watching TH-cam on your TV. You can go to your computer or your phone and click the bell icon next to Subzcribe and choose how to be notified. It took me awhile to realize that I could not see the bell on television and I had to go to the Internet version of TH-cam to find it.
Oh my goodness - Thank you for sharing the brilliant threading tip from Padma! Glad your foot is healing well. My healing journey is just beginning. I slipped and fell in the shower last week and broke my left wrist and sprained the MCL in my left knee. Can’t do any stitching right now but I get to catch up on a lot of FlossTube. I have been wanting to try Cosmo thread and was wondering if you could direct me to a good source. Thank you!
I hope you heal well and quickly! More and more cross stitch shops are selling Cosmo floss and there are some online retailers but right now, depending on where you live, you are more likely to find Cosmo in a quilt shop than a needlework shop. Here are some sources that I am pretty sure carry it: A Stitching Shop Denver, CO 303-727-8500 Tomorrow’s Heirlooms Glen Ellyn IL 630-790-1660 Farmers Attic Springville, PA www.farmersattic.com and www.etsy.com/shop/farmersattic
Thanks for another great video. I would like to clarify with regards to the selvage, is it included when measuring the required fabric, particularly the allowance/border (say 3 inches per side), where said selvage appears? Is that part of the 3 inch border or do we start measuring after the selvage area? I usually include it as part of the border is that ok? Any pros or cons? Thanks and stay safe Jean ❤
Great video always nice to get tips and helps even for us seasoned stitchers. I tend to use and 26 needle (Pats) mostly I am usually on 28ct. Or 32 ct. I think if the people as you say try the sizes the will quickly decide what brand and size they like. Take care......
Since I now look to you to do things related to cross stitch properly, I would like to know how you store WIPS…I currently have lots in ziplock bags(plastic), that are not zipped…I’m not really convinced that this is good for linen…thanks again Jean
I wonder about long term storage in plastic but will confess to relying on it for short term storage. That said, I have strong aversion to using the zip-loc bags commonly used for food storage to hold our WIPs ... not because they are harmful but because the unaware non-stitchers in our lives do not recognize them as important. I know of several times that family/friends have "helped" with clean up and tossed WIPs in regular zip-locs. I know that these examples are rare but why take a chance? I use the zippered mesh bags found in LNSs, office supply stores, big box stores, and of course Amazon and I use beautifully made project bags with a clear plastic window on one side so I know what's in it. I hope this helps!
Hello Jean, the stitching Redwood trip looks fabulous ! An unrelated question - I love your clip eye glasses. I assume they are magnifiers ? may I ask where you got them? Thank you!
Hi Jean glad you getting better I have a Question I stitch on 11 count Aida because of my eyes my Questions is can I get a even weave fabric that is the same count as the Aida I use? I know about magnifying glass and other thing I have a lot of trouble with then I would love to try even weave hope you can help Judy 🇦🇺♥️
Zweigart makes a 20-count linen which will be 10 stitches per inch when stitched over 2. It comes in a nice range of colors, too. I hope you find a fabric that you love!
I have another question to ask. As a newly stitcher I want to know something else about needles and that is how often do you generally change needles? I have a slight bend in the one I’m using now and am not bothered about it but am I making it harder on myself? Thank you in advance Jean. Hope the foot gets better quickly.
I change them when they become damaged. It's hard to know if you are making it more difficult to stitch when using a bent needle. I would be inclined to replace it. :)
Hi Jean…is there a particular brand of tapestry needle that is better than another for cross stitching? I use Bohin, but they are very hard to find! Thank you, and it’s good to see you are healing !
Jean, I have several sets of needles that I purchased for cross stitch. Will they say on the packaging if they are tapestry needles or embroidery needles?
I’m so happy to find your channel. I always learn something new.

You are welcome! I am a very new stitcher, so I think that I analyze how I do everything and I come up with new ways. Also be sure that the hook on your threader goes facing up in the eye and not facing down, and then your thread is less likely to fall off of it while you’re threading the needle.
