Originally shown on Charlie Brooker's 'Screenwipe', here is Matt Berry with a heartfelt tribute to the late Ronnie Hazlehurst, and his contribution to writing and arranging TV themes.
I had the honour of meet Ronnie as a 15 year old student...in December 1982...as part lf a school project. I interviewed him. Very generous wirh his time. A true great.
Ronnie Hazlewood's gift for background music/incidental music is also special : the way he times the rhythm and the notes precisely to the action. A very clever man.
The 'Sorry' theme tune is remarkably simple yet effective and the Ronnie Corbett caricature is perfect. I loved the title sequence from day one. The very last episode opens up with the greatest tv series of all time and Corbett's partner, Ronnie Barker appeared in the greatest sitcom of all time (Porridge) which spawned two Xmas specials, a movie, a sequel and a hit record!
It's a pity that, although it is a great theme, it's actually a common misconception that Ronnie Hazlehurst composed it. Gaynor Colbourn and Hugh Wisdom composed it - mainly Colbourn. Colbourn also arranged it. Hazlehurst conducted it but did not compose or arrange it. (Apologies for being a pedant - I only found out today that it isn't a Hazlehurst composition .... I feel so betrayed ...)
Ronnie incorporated almost every show's title into the melody. Yes - Min - is - ter The - last - of - the - sum - mer - wine etc. With Some Mothers Do 'Ave' Em, he not only did that, but the melody also spells out the title in Morse code. The man was a genius
Me too!! I still can't believe it was John Sullivan and still imagine Rodney with the cans on, in front of a microphone, wearing that red checked jacket, sheet of lyrics in hand.

Absolutely 💯 brilliant. Well done I knew Ronnie really as a friend for over 15 years.
Ronnie was Musical Director of at least three Eurovisions too. There's a lovely overture he composed used on all of them, 1974, 1977 and 1992.

Great to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks John Sullivan sounds like Rodney when he sings the OFAH theme!

Ha ha! In my minds eye it it was always Rodney singing the Only Fools and Horses theme too 😆

Thanks, I was looking forward to a good quality of this interview!
What about the Two Ronnie’s theme music...absolute masterpiece!
Cool fact for Some Mother's... the rhythm for the melody is based on the morse code for the full title
❤️🎩
This is not the Matt Berry voice I know. 🤔
You and he were... buddies, weren't you?
Lol, John Sullivan does sound exactly like Rodney.
I always thought it was Nick Lindhurst singing it
A wonderful tribute, but I am disappointed that Matt actually has a normal voice ...
Me too, whenever I hear his voice on absolute radio, I always think of James Mason
Abso-lute eigh-tiees!
You and he were, *buddies* , weren't you?
