Of my 8 great-grandparents, 7 arrived from Ireland between 1847-1867. Ellis Island was not open yet so most landed in New York. But they were also looking for a new life.

I can't speak for your immigrant ancestors, but I'm grateful that mine who came through Ellis Island from present-day Slovakia, Poland and Ukraine to work in the coal mines in PA had the courage to be "hopeful wanderers." I consider myself to be one of their many lucky beneficiaries!

Lovely to hear these personal stories. Perhaps especially resonates with me because my grand father too came to America through Ellis Island. He came from Norway and married my grandmother, conceived in Norway and born in America. My Mom's family was Scottish-Irish-Celtic in tradition although they came through Ellis Island long before, eventually moved from the East coast to California, where I was born as a fourth generation Californian. Either way, roots in America go back to Ellis Island on both sides of the family as I imagine is the case for many who through immigration, became Americans today.
