I remember first watching this back in the summer of 2013 when I was living in Asheville, sleeping all day, staying awake all night, smoking way too much weed, and just tripping out to....life. It was a weird stasis of sorts, but I needed time to just be...and heal a bit. It was like some weird liminal dissociative year of my life distinct from everything that came before and after. And this film & songs....takes me right back to the vibe of that time. Crazy to think that was a decade ago....
i’m a relatively young AnCo fan (only turned 20 about 2 months ago), started listening when I was about 13 or 14 and have since listened to all their albums at least a few times over and continue to enjoy their new work despite it seeming to be sorta unpopular with a lot of the oldheads on the fanbase. anyways, I only discovered this wonderful little film around a year and a half ago and have watched it a couple of times. while it definitely doesnt have much of a story to parse with it more serving as one big music video to an album, there’s something about What Happened? as the closer and the visuals with it that instills a really weird unplaceable sadness in me. among many other reasons, animal collective’s ability to instill emotions in me with seemingly no source with their music is why they’ve cemented themselves as my favorite band for so many years.
My ex and I used to take psychedelics/dissociatives and watch this. We would get so into it. Especially me, I'd want to put my face right up to the screen and take it all in. Listening to it right now with headpones on gives me an incredibly serene experience, although the video is chaotic for some. I absolutely love this and I'm so glad it was created.
they opened with screens when i saw them on the time skiffs tour! it was incredible, i was not expecting it at all and i think the few of us that recognized it were geeking
It has been a while since I've seen this. First time re-watching it sober, it's still good. The 28:00 to 30:00 sequence still puts a huge grin on my face. I can't help it. Not quite as impactful as The Wall, but it's up there somewhere. It also hit me the other day that AnCo and The Beach Boys share so much musically. Strawberry Jam was Pet Sounds.
The only thing this kind of reminds me of is The Oregonian. However, this truly is a very unique experience. Makes me feel like I'm tripping without even having taken anything
This reminds me why I'm a little disappointed by their new direction. They've gone from "like nothing you've ever heard before" to "Like something you've ever heard before"
After hearing time skiffs (a complete bore of an album) and then coming back to this is so saddening. They were so fucking good and their new sound is just bleh

ODDSAC is easily one of the highlights of Animal Collective’s career and it bums me out that more people (even hardcore fans!) haven’t seen it.
