I live in E TN, Cherokee country. Just two days ago I spoke with a Cherokee bowyer about this very design. You did absolutely every thing he told me about, and I might add, you did it flawlessly. True to form, history and culture. You are a very talented young man, and I am an old man, but a new subscriber !!!
I got turned onto Bow making over 20 years ago when I discovered a book written by David Walentine “ making Indian bows the old way” and I was intrigued because I always wanted to learn how Native Americans did it but nobody seemed to know. I tillered a few hickory short self bows with very heavy draw weights (probably more heavy than necessary) around 70-80# at 45”. They shot well but I just lost the free time to do it anymore because of other commitments. It’s great to see others like yourself are still keeping the bow making knowledge alive. It’s part of Native American culture that has been lost! Keep the videos coming!!
This is one of my favorite bow types... The other favorite has longer willow leaf shape tips just a little longer than the diamond tips... Both bows are the same other than the tips .. I like to 55 or 60# and usually draw somewhere around 26" using pinch grip... My bow is a really dark brown Osage...
I am fascinated by your careful, Zen like approach. I too am a craftsman but after watching you I have to take a step back and savor the experience. Quality work, just watch it unfold. Thanks.
Hands down my favourite channel, subject matter, everything. After owning a few production bows I am chomping at the bit to come across a primitive bow in the flesh or make my own. Love the content!!
@@organicarchery So much truth in that. I have a two year old son and want to pass down trades like archery and bowyership. And with getting my first ever deer not six days ago, woodsmanship and hunting will find their way to him as well. Fingers crossed for the next generation.
Hi, I live in Italy and I'm making bows (long an tall bows) as a beginner. I've found your videos very useful, thanks. The first video I watched is the one about Otzi iceman bow....Otzi lived not far away from my region !
Love the work man. You've got a family off grid in Montana watching. My oldest boy is 5 and we shoot our bows together most days. Someday we'll take these lessons you're teaching and build a couple of bows together! Thank you.
I'm from Maine and I'm an advid Longbow hunter. I have never made a bow like this and want to start making bows...Glad I found your channel ! Outstanding !
Love this series! I ordered the referenced encyclopedia too, Building a like you do has to be great therapy….just making bowstrings puts me in a good place. I can imagine a bow!
Absolutely STUNNING workmanship! I can't believe how silent it shoots and fast! 🏹 Osage is King and you just made a fantastic bow with it. One that I know without a doubt anyone would be proud to own. 🙌
Enjoying your builds tremendously! The one part you left out of this one was building the string, I thought it was very technical and almost as interesting as the bow itself last time, IMO. Amazing work sir.
I have never made a self Bow but I have an Osage stave that is very slim and watching this I think that I will try and make this type from what I have. Thanks for sharing.
That’s awesome! The Catawba tribe from which that bow originated from was from actually in the area I grew up. Wow that’s amazing. Awesome job Young man !!!
Thats my favorite style bow, bendy handle bow eastern style. Just finished a 64” 48#’s@28 fire hardened shagbark hickory bow with asymmetrical nocks lenape style. I like mine a bit longer being 6’1”. For me 62 and up
I very much appreciated & enjoyed this video. Have never made a bow from Osage, or one with a bending handle. Now, I might give it a shot. Looking forward to your next video.
Just happened across your channel and glad I did, I’ve always wanted to try my hand at making a bow. That was fun to watch you build, and it seems to shoot great! New subscriber here. God bless!
another great video I started out hunting traditional many many moons ago my wife has been encouraging me to get back to it and your videos have kindled a fire to begin the search for a new Bow, thank you!! Haha that same fly was in your last video
Beautiful work, thats my favorite style of bow and nocks. Just someone about a simple bend on the handle bow. Elegant and beautiful. I am currently working on a shagbark hickory bow similar to that one. Its 70 inches long though
Hard to beat a good bendy-handle! Many of my personal bows are long. Seventy inches is a great length. The bow I’ve killed the most deer with is 74” long.
Another great bow. I know it takes talent, but you make look so easy. Doing research must be the key for the bow to resemble what Naive Americans used.
All said and done, this design has always been my favorite, mostly due to it’s simplicity. I use this fully bending design on high crowned wood/staves like saplings. Great video man. I’m liking the series
I'm in the process of making a longbow from osage (my first attempt). Your shop setup is amazing and well thought out. I'm using a draw knife and rolled up towel against my hip and it's kicking my ass. Your videos give me inspiration and lots of hope that I can eventually end up with a bow suitable for hunting whitetail here in east texas.
It's a great bow wood, but don't overlook the excellent bows that can be made from ash, hickory, maple, oak, hackberry, elm, and other whitewoods! Nearly everywhere (with some exceptions) has a decent bow wood that's native to the region.
Looks very nice. I´m happy you started your TH-cam-chanel. A pleasure to see you at work. :) The second book is very nice, too. (If you haven´t read it jet.) ;)
Another bow build already? Awesome : )!.... I like how you to my eye are perfecting those designs and make them so beautiful.... : ). I noticed the other three "explanation videos" for the Ötzi bow build are gone unfortunately... I liked those.

I love your bow very very very much think that was great. When I saw you cut the straw line down the stage and then scrape that one half off about passed out just cause I thought man you could make two bows out of that one save but anyway, so I think it’s great that, just a nice nice shooting bow I love sage of course here in South Carolina it’s hard you can’t just cut it down anywhere just doesn’t grow here pretty much. Do you have other wood here but we. have an archery program here locally for disabled veterans and first responders so I have joined at archer group, but I’m getting better even though I have difficulties they have very very good day. Thank you. I really love the way the grain was just perfectly flat on like that is literally my favorite wood in the world as it would worker which I’ve never actually use it
I made a bow like this one this last week from an Osage log I cut in Missouri. Mines a bit rougher and primitive but the same idea and length. You had a realy nice peace of wood to work with. That can be hard with osage, at least where I'm at. It makes for a cleaner end result but knots and wiggles add character and really toast your skill and techniques
Beautiful bow brother, another fine peace of craftsmanship. With proper care that should last someone quite awhile. I’m currently working on a Comanche inspired bow using Black locust. Blessings!

Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast when it comes to bowmaking!
I've watched this video before, but just now noticed the picture perfect layer sawn grain on the end of that already awesome Osage stave 👍
It was a really pristine stave!
Its not just about the design, what felt more astonishing that such simplistic design, yet those shots are pinpoint accurate and felt very powerful...
It doesn't take very much osage wood to make a respectable bow!
Beautiful bow! That osage orange is striking.

Osage orange is such a beautiful wood, and hard as a rock. What a work of art that bow is.
What a premium and fine tuned bow. Awesome job man.
That shows it's an art to build em,definitely not a lost one, that was an excellent shooter!!
