  • Today we’ll travel 15 km from our main yard in Sharjah Industrial Area 15 to Al Layyah, Sharjah, to tackle a challenging construction project under the constraints of limited space and the need to protect existing structures. This 37-minute video will capture the mobilization and application of a pair of KOBELCO SK350 medium excavators-turned-piling rigs in action.
Our journey begins with the KOBELCO SK350 medium excavator, already loaded onto a low-bed truck and hauled by a Volvo 460 prime mover. At first glance, something is off with the excavator- where’s the stick (or arm)? The stick has been chucked away and replaced with an auger drive/rotary head for the specific application the excavator is about to do. Once we arrive on the site, we understand the scope of the project today: to reinforce the foundation below the existing bridge. BUT here’s the drill- the low clearance at the work area, the ground conditions, and the potential risk to the existing bridge structure pose as the main antagonists to this project.
This is where our innovative solution comes in: let’s send two medium KOBELCO SK350 excavators equipped with specialized attachments instead of a specialized piling rig. The first, fitted with an ABI MBA 3100 auger drive/rotary head, skillfully bores into the ground, prepping it for the steel beams crucial for foundation support. Following closely is the second excavator, armed with an ABI HVR 45 Z hydraulic vibratory piledriving unit. This machine holds the steel pile steady, driving it precisely into the foundation, where the bored holes were. Why excavators? We chose these 35-ton machines over the heavier 60-ton piling rigs for their low ground pressure and maximum height of just 7 meters - perfect for working in tight spaces without compromising the surrounding environment.
    Data for nerds:
** ABI MBA 3100 auger drive tech specs:
    Torque: 3100 daNm
    Max oil pressure: 300 bar
Required oil per rotation: 7.5 l/rotation
    Max revolutions: 48 rpm
    Operating weight: 930 kg
** ABI HVR 45 Z add-on hydraulic vibratory piledriving head tech specs:
    Torque: 300 kN
    Pull force: 40 kN
    Operating pressure: 32 MPa
    Oil flow rate: 130 l/min
    Operating weight: 1160 kg
