  • The Binturong looks like the mix between a bear, a cat, and a monkey, but they’re more than the sum of their weird-looking parts.

It's actually a smart question. Lots of humans cook bready substances in the forest. Are they messing with the heads of these creatures? Probably not. Almost everything has a better sense of smell than people. Although male Ocelots can be lured to certain areas by certain branded perfume, which apparently smells enough like their mates to interest them.

Well, that’s funny about the popcorn because it’s actual name “binturong” in Talag-Lut Malay literally means “kettle popped rice from the anus”... “bintu” being a local puffed/popped rice snack made with a black iron kettle over a fire with rice grains popping in heated palm oil, and “rong” being anything coming from your backside, like “Bup-rong” being a poo, “Elu-rong” being diarrhea, and “Papat-rong” meaning breaking wind/flatulence. So “binturong” or popped corn(rice) - ass, is a pretty adept nomenclature for a mammal that makes a savory popcorn-like scent with its anal scent glands.

If we just reject palm oil, the people there will find other plants to cultivate on the land, or even cut down more forest trees for the living.

So stoked to have found this video! I saw one of these years ago at the San Diego zoo and couldn’t remember what it was called or even how to describe it to search for it. Bear/cat/monkey sounds about right

There's also a variety of a Cassia called Senna didymobotrya, whose leaves and early blooms smell just like movie popcorn. I've often wondered what the plant was trying to attract that likes the smell.

Do the Devil's coach horse beetle, Ocypus olens! I see them around my place outside of Olympia Washington but I guess that they are found around the world. When I've had the time to watch one they kind of remind me of an insect honey badger.

Too many comments to scroll through so I have to share my mother's experience at a zoo in Palawan I think. So there was a bearcat there, and she expected it to roar. Instead it gave out a mew - that's the cat part of it

What are the chances the next video I watch (this one) would be discussing the same thing? It's honestly a really weird coincidence, hearing Maillard reaction twice within the same 10 minutes...*

I have to disagree with your last point. We need to drastically change our way of life. You cannot produce all the amount of palm oil that is currently required sustainably. Also, you cannot cover the current demand for plant oil with other oil sources, since palm oil is supposed to be the most efficient. So, we need to reduce the volume of consumed goods per capita in the "western societies", which is ridiculously high and change the economic growth model. This might seem like an impossible task, but if we want to be realistic, that's our goal
