Movies often portray Sir Winston’s speeches as bombastic and emphatic, but in reality his tone was reserved and deliberate. Gary Oldman did a fantastic Churchill, but he, like many others before him, fell into the trap of delivering a Churchill speech with vigor and shouting. In reality, Winston’s words spoke for themselves, they rode in on a wave of pure prose, not of emphatic noise. That was the true brilliance of his tongue.

I humbly submit my contrary view. I believe that what we are used to hearing are recordings done years after the initial delivery to Parliament. I have been led to believe that the original submissions were more vivacious than the later recordings.

Some recordings we have were made 9 years after he made the speeches, he obviously wouldn’t feel or give the speech in the same manner as if the enemy was days away from taking the island.

What would I have done if I lived in Germany back then and knew or heard of the Concentration Camps, would I have spoken out knowing I could be killed. Now as far as Germany standing up to Hitler, I am not sure most did, there was a weakness in the people, but then that purposelessness became strength, became stronger by following someone as captivating as Hitler, inspired by his voice, his Speeches,
Winston was different, not crazy, well, may he drank too much, loved women too much, he was flawed, ok...... but he knew that there was only one way out and that was Onward, Straight Ahead, there was no looking back, just Marching onward and believing in, hoping for Victory!
      Never, Never, Never Give Up!
And I think when Hitler heard his voice, his speeches, he may have been taken aback, someone was actually standing up to him where so many had folded like a house of cards.
We need great men and women today, strong warriors as the battle wages on!

As a 64 year old Englishman born in 1957, I was not born until after World War 2. But my parents lived through the war and as children we were told by our parents and taught in school about the War and in particular Winston Churchill's part. His speeches to the nation and stoicism were very widely regarded as responsible for keeping the moral of this country up when it was on its knees.
It saddens me that this hero is not fully appreciated by most of the millennial generations. That most of them don't realise that they owe their freedom to Winston Churchill and that generation who gave their lives . A time when freedom meant more than safety.

The voice is not Churchill's. The speech was originally delivered by Churchill in the House of Commons which, at that time, was not wired for sound recording. Churchill privately recorded several of his war time speeches after the war for posterity at his Chartwell home in Kent. Radio actor Norman Shelley's voice was used to broadcast some of Churchill's speeches - including 'We shall fight them on the beaches' and "Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat", Shelley would take his own false teeth out for the part. At the height of the war the British Council had additionally asked Shelley to impersonate Churchill for broadcasts in America.
In 1990 an American speech research group called Sensimetrics tested 20 of the speeches that Decca and EMI sell under Churchill's name. The speech patterns on three recordings were found to be different. They were the disputed speeches originally made in Parliament in 1940: the Dunkirk speech, the 'Finest Hour' speech, and the one made on 13 May, when Churchill promised 'blood, toil, tears and sweat'.

War is a cruel place and do we needed somebody who would do cruel things but Churchill got us through the war he was not brought to power to look forward he was brought into power because he was a bully in some ways and would do anything in his power so save democracy no matter what people thought of him for it . In someways Churchill made one of the biggest sacrifices ever made in history because what country as ever given up all the territory it owned to give the world something good (and no other country before that time has given up everything it owned for the good of other nations even enemy's)

Thank you for the uploading. Perhaps you can tell me: as far as I know, at the time in Parliament there wasn't equipment for recording speeches. This partly explains why the recordings of the other 2 famous speeches ("Their finest hour" and "We shall fight on the beaches") were done, not by WC himself, but rather by Norman Shelley, the best impersonator of Churchill's voice, at the time. So my question: is it also Norman Shelley's voice that we hear in this recording?... Shared on Google+

Churchill was a fantastic war leader, but as a child growing up in the fifties in the north east of England we used to boo him when he appeared on the news reels at the local cinema we cheered when Eisenhower made a appearance, it was many years later that I found out why we treated him with scorn, his treatment of the coal miners in Wales when they were on strike a last resort i might add to get better conditions and to curtail the amount of fatalities that were occurring to our brother coal miners, get the rats back down their holes was his answer to settling their grievances, that response from a Tory would not surprise the Labour party voting Welshmen, but if compassion had been added to his long list of attributes maybe just maybe those kids sitting on the wooden benches at the local flea pit would have heralded his appearance on the screen with cheers instead of jeers.

You all can harp and criticize Churchill all you want. He inherited a government that had appeased and capitulated at every turn for 20 years. Then when the war was won he was sacked by the very people he saved. A tragic hero will never receive his true accolades.

Winston Churchhill stood up, publicly to tyranny. He was not afraid to say what needed to be said and he said it, he said it in the face of great odds stacked against him and the British Empire. But he stood strong and never gave up, he decided freedom whatever the cost was worth fighting for. If we do not develop that sort of back bone, and if we are not prepared to stand up for our Rights and Freedoms, where ever you are in the world, you will loose them, make no mistake and you will live in tyranny and regret. That day will come.

While Switzerland was just thinking to make chocolate, while the whole mainland was surrending to Hitler's brute force (Italy too, with the worst choice made by Mussolini due to the isolationism after the Ethiopian war), while USSR's only move was the aggression to Finland, men like Churchill and Roosevelt decided to carry on the battle for the principles humans fought for and were fading, defended the principles of our society, of western society
