Catching Tiny Fish With Tiny Rods

  • Every fisherman today has a big fish story, but in ancient Japan, the tiniest fish was the biggest catch. Tanago fishing is a Japanese tradition dating back to samurai over 200 years ago. A tanago fish can be as small as the nail of a pinky finger; in order to catch one, a fisherman must have a hook, bait, and a very special fishing rod called Edo Wazao, handmade from natural bamboo. Twin brothers Toryo and Shuhei Tosaku are the 8th generation of their family to keep up the precious craft of Edo Wazao. With less than ten skilled craftsmen left, the brothers are hoping carry on the legacy of their ancestors.

Hey man, it's not that bad. I know that you think that you are bad because you can't catch bigger fish but it's just bad luck overall. If you catch enough of them you can have a good meal! If you can't, it's always a good feeling when you let the little fellas go. You are a good fisherman because even if you caught only one fish in your entire life means that you know how it's done. Have a good day!

I love taking my smallest ultralight spinning setup, tying on my smallest jig and catching fry. It's a lot of fun when the lunker bass aren't biting. So far the smallest I've caught was a little 3" largemouth.
The action is really good too. It's just bite after bite after bite.

When i was a little kid growing up in Bangladesh around age 5-6 I used to catch so many of these tiny fish. Would be a fishing line on a long shaft with a weight and a floater made of reed. When the floater dipped a little under water meant that you got a bite and you'd pull at an angle and get your fish.

not to be that guy but i can literally name close to a thousand species a fish that are smaller than tanago, so to call it the one of smallest fish in the world is slightly misleading just because of the numerous species of fish at a smaller size, especially the fact that some are significantly smaller. id estimate (info on tanakia tanago size not well documented) somewhere around ≈5000% smaller (see. boraras micros ≈13 mm , barboides gracilis ≈18 mm , paedocypris progenetica ≈7.8mm , schindleria brevipinguis ≈ 8mm).

The evaporation ponds by my house get some bass that are like 3-4 inches. Its actually a lot of fun to fish scaled down because you can see and feel them nibbling your baits. I totally get this (:

My smallest fish was a bluegill about the size of a ping pong ball. It took me about 30min to catch it, watching it like a hawk, and tbh I was as hyped as I was when I caught my 75Ib yellowfin tuna.

Im guessing that the Japanese think that many things done in western culture are pointless, but it really strains credulity for me to think that there are people out there that invest significant amounts of time doing this. I guess I just dont get it. If I go fishing its to catch something with enough meat on it to be worthwhile.

In ancient Japan, the leaders and elites wouldn't have much time to actually go to a river or lake and fish. Many people find fishing relaxing. So having a small decorative pond, which was common, and tiny fish in those ponds, some fishing lover was bound to come up with the idea. Probably spread pretty quickly.
