  • Meru is a town in eastern Kenya. It is the headquarters of Meru County and the seventh-largest urban center in the country. Meru forms a municipal council with a population of 240,900 residents
    Meru town is the Commercial capital of Northern and Eastern Kenya. It hosts a Central Bank of Kenya’s Currency Centre serving the North Eastern Half of Kenya. Meru has 22 bank branches. while several micro-finance institutions are also available. Mwalimu Cooperative Savings & Credit Society Limited, (Mwalimu Sacco), the largest Sacco in Kenya, maintains a branch in Meru. The town is the business and agricultural center for north-eastern Kenya.
    Meru County is one of the 47 counties of Kenya, located in the former Eastern Province. It borders Isiolo County to the North, Tharaka/Nithi County to the East, Nyeri County to the South West and Laikipia County to the West. It covers a total area of 7,006 Km2 out of which part of it 972.3Km2 is gazetted as forest.
    It has a population of 1.55 million people. Meru County is the home of the Ngaa people (Meru), who are related to other ethnicities living around the Mount Kenya region: the Kikuyu, Embu people and to some extent the Kamba people Also, peoples from the east coast of Kenya, along the Indian Ocean, like the Bajuni, Swahili, Mijikenda, and further inland, the Taita, Taveta and westwards to the Lake Victoria coast, the Kisii and Maragoli as well as other Luhya people, are all related to the Meru.
    Chuka is a town on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, in Kenya about 65 km south Of Meru Town. It falls within Tharaka-Nithi County and the former Eastern Province. Between 1992 and 2009, Chuka was the capital of Tharaka Nithi District (split off from Meru District). Tharaka Nithi District was further split into Meru South and Tharaka Districts with Chuka remaining the Capital of Meru South. Later, Meru South and Tharaka were amalgamated into Tharaka-Nithi County.
    Chuka Town is chiefly occupied by the Chuka people, one of the nine Meru dialect Speakers. They dwell on the south-eastern slopes of Mt. Kenya, and cover the area between the Thuci River in the south, and the Nithi River in the north. It is a common tradition with the Chuka that they have always been in the forests of Mt. Kenya hence they moved down to their present abode. Other versions of the Chuka migratory tradition say that they came out from Mbwa with the other Meru.
    The Chuka are believed to have sprung from the Tharaka, another of the meru subtribes. They have also a form of blood-brotherhood with the Igembe and the Tigania of the northern meru dialects. The Chuka are primarily Meru who, having climbed the first slopes of Mt. Kenya, clearing the forest for cultivation (even at present the fields of the Chuka are on the lower section of their country), mixed with the aboriginal inhabitants of the forest and established some kind of contact with the Embu. These aboriginal forest inhabitants seem to have been the Gumba, now only remembered by some traditions and described as very small people. It seems certain that they were a pygmy race.
    Colleges have recently blossomed in Chuka and its vicinity with Chuka University being the major.new development, headed by Prof. Njoka. W
    Tharaka-Nithi County is one of the 47 counties of Kenya located in Kenya's former Eastern Province. The county has an area of 2609 km2 and as of the 2019 census a population of 393,177.
    Tharaka-Nithi County is the home to the Chuka, Muthambi, Mwimbi and Tharaka sections of the Ameru (Meru) community. The people of Tharaka-Nithi County are nowo predominantly Christian with the Catholics, the Presbyterian, and the Methodists being the predominant religion..
    The county consists of three constituencies: Maara, Chuka/Igambang'ombe, Tharaka.
    In 1992 Meru District, sometimes called "Greater Meru" was broken up into four pieces, Meru Central, Meru North, Meru South and Tharaka; with Meru South (also known as Nithi District) combined with Tharaka into a new Tharaka-Nithi District. In 1998, the Tharaka Nithi District was split into two districts, Nithi and Tharaka, but the Kenya Supreme Court decision of 2009 declared that split unconstitutional. Subsequently, under the revised constitution of 2010, Tharaka-Nithi became a county
    Nkubu is a town in Kenya. It is located on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, within Meru County. It falls in one of the most-fertile and best-watered parts of Africa, with tea, coffee and dairy farming as the main economic activities in the area. It is also the lead town in South Imenti Constituency.
    The town is a trade hub with several businesses, and several banks: Equity Bank, Family Bank, Cooperative bank, Kenya Commercial Bank and anumber of Sacco.

Both tribes claim to have come from Egypt and the claims place them to the reign of Pharaoh Mentuhotep or Muntu. Tigania in both languages means to separate, it came from when they parted in Egypt. I visited Chuka and I thought I was in Ogembo. The environment and people look the same. My family is Kisii and we have married 3 women from Meru.

    The guy explaining did not quite get your question. Tharaka-Nithi county comprises of the following sections (subtribes/dialects) of the Ameru: the Chuka (Chuka Igambangome constituency), the Mwimbi, the Muthambi (Maara constituency, and the Tharaka (Tharaka constituency). Meru county compries, from the far North: the Igembe, the Tigania, the Imenti, and the Mitine. Interestingly, each big river separates these communities. At Nchiru, near Meru University, you missed the Njuri Ncheke Court/Parliament. Njuri Ncheke is the supreme court of the Ameru.

    Thanks Afrikan Traveller for another fine content.Sorry to hear that your family was affected by the Tribal clashes of 2007/08.I believe Kenya can learn from Tanzania in overcoming Tribalism by encouraging the use of Kiswahili as our main language.Tanzania has being able to unite 120 Tribes to one Nation and we in Kenya still having trouble with 45 Tribes.A good example is the current fallout in Kenya Kwanza and Azimio over the running mates Tribe

    • @kariuki8
      @kariuki8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AfrikanTraveller May hope also .Right now Kenyan biggest challenge is taming the run-a-way corruption that is creating poverty.Remember poverty is leading cause of violence including Tribalism since when tribes believe they are being denied their fair share of resources they will turn to violence to claim the resources.

    • @kariuki8
      @kariuki8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamessitati7396 Very true Mwalimu Nyerere identified tribalism as the biggest challenge young African Nations will face after Independence and put strategies in place like getting rid of Tribal Chiefs,.encouraged Kiswahili as the communication language in all aspects of Tanzanians activities.Tanzania ID or Passports one was not asked for their Tribes.This fostered National unity

      No offense, what is in Nebraska? Like attractions etc? I have driven through Nebraska I-80 along with Wyoming, Kansas through I-70. And those have been the most boring drives I have done in US. A bunch of corn farms and Wyoming is just plain. On the hand,Colorado west from Denver was the best and scenic I have ever had in US also plenty of attractions.
