    That idea on the little tap wrench is great. That makes it so much more stable and controllable with the handle fixed. Another good one from Rob! Thank you.

    I got a similar set a couple of months ago and i like your idea to centre the handle. Using only the point on a centre drill is far better than using it to the second chamfer as its 120° and fits the normal drill perfectly, if you go to the next chanfer its 90° and the drill can start cutting off centre. A dimple in the bolt you put in will help to alighn it if using the lathe or drill press. and also fileing a small flat on the crossbar will hold better.

    Hey Rob, I'm not a big fan of these Banggood reviews, but in your case, you are one of the best sales pitches i've come across, I seem to order all the stuff you endorse, and have been happily satisfied with the good value, as I try to be frugal with a passion. Cheers and carry on with more of the same!, thanks.

    I am spoiled rotten for taps. In the workshop of my employer, it is considered it too risky to use a tap more than a few times. Thus, there's an abundance of lightly used top notch Sutton taps available for whoever wants them, and surprisingly there aren't many people who want them.

    G’day Rob good review on them I’ve used them and found them fine for most applications. Your right about the “T” type chucks I found you can’t get enough tightening pressure on them and the tap works loose, I tighten them up using a pair of pliers around the knurled bit. Good to see you again Rob kind regards John

      Hi John, The small cheapy "T" holders are not ideal, but will do the job (just). At least this one has more meat than most you get. You can't beat the wedge type tap holder I used in the video. Glad to hear the taps held up OK. Cheers Rob

    This is a nice and honest review, starting when you said, "this is not a ratchet set" which means the product name is not what the seller claims.
    It is my suspicion that Bang Good sells a lot of stuff that does not meet quality control. I guess it makes more sense to sell the stuff for cheap than recycle flawed products, in the end recycling tries the finished stuff like low quality raw materials and that destroys the money invested in production while requires more money to recover the raw materials (particularly for complex products). That being said, it is clear to me why sometimes people get garbage and others fairly well made stuff and thus the mixed reviews.
    I guess that given the level of success you have had it is probable that most products sent for review are picked from their stock and thus tend to be of fairly good quality. Nonetheless I also think that sometimes people expect that cheap products should perform like top quality ones, so purchases based on reviews and personal experience can have completely opposite results. I would recommend to lower expectations a bit and do not ask beyond what you get for the price.
    Thanks for the review .

      quality control in PRC is a paying option. you want cheap? you don't pay for QC and the manufacturer either ships everything to you, including duds, or they resell what they cannot send you, usually the worst or overruns, to local suppliers for independent resellers selling through Banggood, Wish, Aliexpress, etc. 😑
      if you want quality, you either pay for the level of QC you want. also you better have someone you trust on site for every single production run unless you work with a known tier-one or two manufacturer. most cheap arse chinese manufacturers have not a microgram of pride in what they make. caveat emptor is the name of the game.

      Hi Steve, Internet prices just keep getting cheaper on tooling. I only ever buy from the tool shop if I need the item right NOW. They have a lot of overheads for sure, but the mark up they put on is massive. Just shows what they make on this stuff. Anything less than 100% and I doubt they would even stock it, same as supermarkets. Cheers Rob

    Thanks for the heads up. I ordered two sets for about the price I would have to pay for 2 or 3 metric course taps at my local supplier. In the UK it is normally considered best to have three taps: 1st, 2nd & plug but I have not found it makes that much differences on the stuff I do. Sometimes I have to use metric fine and I guard those taps and dies as they hurt the wallet more. I broke a m4 coarse tap recently by using a blunt tapping drill, work hardening the m8 stainless steel bolt I was going to tap down the head with m4 and then snapping the tap. Wondered if I might recover by heating the bolt up, but was too busy so just got another. The scriber and cut off steel you highlighted a while back came and are good as you showed. Thanks for sharing!

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can anneal the work hardened bolt, but that will also destroy the hardness factor. So it's best not to do that, as re-tempering is bound to be unreliable and often prone to impact failure. That's why avoiding work hardening in the first place is the best practice by far. Do it as shown in the video and you will have no problem. Cheers Rob

      @@Xynudu The Banggood taps I ordered on the 30th arrived today (UK), 7th of September. Very good service by China post. Nice little mod. Rob. Maybe I'm not as fastidious as you but I have a half dozen or so 'T' Tap holders with that annoying sliding cross-bar. Simple fix? roll a tight fitting 'O-Ring' on either side and 'Bob's your uncle' - Tight fitting, adjustable and requires no tools to change it's position. Maybe I'm just a cheaper 'cheapskate' than you eh?

    Hi Rob. I recognised the printer shaft before you said what it was! I have a few of those in my metalwork stash. Amazing that you can get a decent tap set for $5 - totally amazing. It would cost me more in stamps and envelopes to send an empty envelope to China, I think. What do you recommend for power tapping? I've seen some with a chamfered lead in ('machine taps') which push the cuttings through the hole, and some with a spiral clearance which you mentioned - they pull the cuttings back out the hole like a twist drill does. Any opinion on which of those are right for power tapping on the lathe (and/or mill). Cheers, Craig

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Craig, I'm not a great fan of power tapping, so I'm not the right person to speak to. A broken tap is a thing to ruin your day and power tapping just ups the ante IMHO. So it's not for me. Can't help you with this one. Spiral taps are used extensively by industry and from all accounts were designed for machine operation. So they are probably your best bet. Cheers Rob.

    nice review. I decided to order an identical "looking" set from ali express figuring it would be decent enough. The machining on the threads on all except the m8 was terrible. I should have just used the link you provided on the banggood set. The threads on the taps had sections where the thread wasn't even fully cut. Hopefully the quality of those from banggood is still good though. See ya.

    Rob not all carbon taps are black, i have a set of UK made Presto BA thread taps that are carbon steel & they look the same as the ones you are reviewing even down to the color & surface finish. I also have a set of German taps but they have them made in China & also look in appearance to the ones you are reviewing, these are also carbon steel. All of my other tap sets are UK or US made HSS taps & you can certainly tell the difference in appearance to the carbon taps, even more so when you test the performance of the carbon v the Hss. I know Banggood do sell HSS taps & they highlight that in the specs on those taps & are more expensive. But still cheap in comparison to UK or US made HSS taps.

    • @Xynudu
      @Xynudu  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I realise that and stated that the ones I have were shiny under the final finish. Thanks for expanding on that. HSS comes in many grades and I suspect these are probably on the low end, but the one I tried seemed to cut fine and make a clean thread of the correct size. It also showed a bit of flex, which my two carbon sets don't. They snap as their first warning ;)
      The two BG taps I bought previously are marked HSS. These ones are not. But that isn't a true indicator as some of my taps from brand names aren't marked either.
      Anyway, at the end of the day this set seems like it will do the job for most light use. Can't expect too much for potato chip money.
      Cheers Rob
