Around 7 years ago when I was 15, this was probably one of the first tutorials I ever watched when I became interested in being a DJ. I may not be scratching as much today. But, I'm playing in a club every weekend and love it! Thank you so much for making these videos, I don't know where or what I'd be doing without all these tutorials you made!
Nishy P my pleasure :)
I got into DJ'ing in 2007. Your videos literally changed my life. I cannot be anymore serious. Thank you.
Absolutely the best online teacher ever! Don't sell out mate!!!!!
He did not :)
This Guy IS the best i watch his tutorial since 2008 and he teaches a lot of things in details
Keep the good working man and thank you for what you doing
(Sorry for my English 😅)
Always go for direct drive turntables, don't buy belt drive. all the best

dj tutor
amazing!! after 6years of playing on vinyl, 10years learning and producing, tried some scratching...
But what I've never figured out by myself is, to move the hand along with the sample... Geez, no wonder I was having trouble staying in touch with the first beat !!! Thanx man, your skillz and knowhow are just briliant
Here I am 27 going back to your videos to learn how to do stuff again. I just recently got the XDJ -XZ-N after not playing for 6-7 years. Iv been watching you since I was like 16 to learn how to play. Thank you for your knowledge and way of explaining things.
This is a certified TH-cam classic!
I can remember the camera at the time was resting on the sofa on top of a pillow!...lol
hey! I'm german from argentine... I learn a lot with your lessons, im beginner with the scratching... thnk's for all. bye!
I was 12 when i watched this, i had my first ever set up stanton t50s and wanted to just go wild with it and learn everything i was dead excited. I'm now turning 27. The memories.
he's like the Gordon Ramsay of being a DJ
The gems this man has taught us all, for FREE…what a guy ❤
i got a numark ns7. I got the syncing going nicely. i support u because i need to learn this stuff now b4 too many ppl in my area get better than me. Good job.
“DJ Tutorial” is such a good DJ name
“DJ Tutorial ft MCs How2 and Top-Tip”
dropping jungle for 13 years, its high time i learned how to scratch. thank you my brutha. peace and respect.
Top Notch. I offer lessons on how to play, scratch, phrase, and so on. I found your tutorial very well put together. I try to explain to my students exactly what you are saying. It's hard for me to describe
A master tutor, he does the best DJ/Turntable tutorials
I just started. I bought 2 x Technics SL-1210 MK2. They are known for the good quality and is in many places clubs etc the standard turntables used. They bit exspensive though but given the quality and reputation they should be easy to sell if u change ur mind!
On my mixer D(JM300) there is no options for the cross fader such as how fast it 'opens' for the sounds etc which i already miss alot cuz it is a bit too soft. But without doubt, the Technics 1210 mk2 is a very good buy
i do not have the first idea where to start, this was very useful thank you
oh dear i wanted to send u mail a moment ago. but then i thought.. "hey search scratching beginners in youtube.. there are so many videos für beginners.." and wtf... i found ur video.. u are a MASTER man... i love your helpful videos!!
Dude i can't give enough props to you, it seems you cover all topics about djing haha. Thanks again man =)
This is long division where CDJ/MP3 is the calculator. Yeah, the electronic age has made things much easier, but it takes some true skill to scratch old school. As always, awesome videos!
most on line record shops will post good Breaks pl's to you, on these lp's you will get music and samples suitable for scratching and beat juggling.
Thank you sir and FYI I always start with your tutorials , love them all :)
Yes, at the end of the day to anything, if you wanted you could scratch to classical music!!
johnathan
I watched this video around the time I got into it back in 2006 awesome video. Thank you
just wanted to say that i love all your videos, great job and thanks!
Nice video! I had no idea of scratching what so ever, this was enlightening.
iv been djing for a few months now. got all my gear from the states. pretty cheap since the canadian dollar was kicking ass. but these lessons are great keep up the helpfull and good work cheers from canada
In a way yes, because to stop it from skipping it must be set at the correct height. type in " q bert", he gives a good description.
if you get the CD that you used to install serato, there's a track on it called "scratch sentence" if you stick that in serato the first sound is pretty much what he's got
This guy is my hero! Somehow I completely understand everything he says.
Very Informative, very well explained. Great video!
@steve702 Got my RMX 2 days ago. Scratching is totally different because the track won't stop if you hold your finger on the jog wheel. Take advantage of your hot cues. Make a loop on your other deck so you can practice as long as you want. I quite like the intro to "I want to get high" by Cypress Hill. But another good song is a Drum and bass track called "Rapture" by Sparfunk & Joe Solo. There is a break about 3 minutes in that speeds up. Get a rhythm going then make it faster.
Cool video mate, very good teacher. I play the guitar and have no desire to scratch lol. But I have always wondered how you guys do this and I am very impressed. Thanks for your time
thanks alot for taking the time out of your day to spread these skills.
Hey man, your tutorials are great!!! I'm a Dj for about 8 years, but still things u tell are usefull to me :) Keep on bringin' this stufffFFFF!!!!!
@smoshmouth Yup, just search serato scratch live and you'll see what its all about. In serato you "load" the digital track you would like to play on the deck you wish to play it on. Serato is also compatible with most popular digital audio formats. Serato also has the option to play an actual vinyl by routing the signal from the needle directly to your mixer, as if the serato interference wasnt even there.
Great lesson. Now play the video and press 6 ;). Thanks man, good tutorials you have!
This is an awesome guide! Thanks for posting it,it really helps!
You are a great teacher jonathan. thanx for showing aspiring deejays the ropes. Cheers mate!
well done mate... keep on keepin' on!
Nice, look at all the hits you got just from showing people the basics. Mad cool on your end, you get kudos.
-DJ Antomattei of Tokyo
Thought I'd try to learn how to scratch, and of course ellaskins has it covered! You are an absolute legend, mate!
Simple but Effective advice. Cheers 👍🏻
I found that sample on a scratch record called Roulette 2...its got like 30 minutes of samples along with that one...no clue why people are giving u thumbs down rather than helping you out /shrug
i don't think iv'e seen anyone scratch like this. but his vids are still great.
I love u. This is the kinda people the world needs.
One of the first videos I saw on youtube
love your tutorials! you are a good coach
One of the best . If not the best .
NHAC BEATS thanks
One of my Dj friends is a brilliant turntablist and Ive seen him make scratch sounds using actuall word samples as opposed to using a sample of a scratch, I would say it depends on the Dj. Also he uses alot of sound effect samples.
17 years ago, you are the man
cheers mate
learned a lot
more then i did when i was at school
gracias por tu aporte sera de mucho ayudo para los que queremos aprender ha hacerlo... thanks very much
BRAVO! never heard/see a better explanation of it!
your stuff is great, always wanted to learn how to scratch, never really got my head around it.
i myself started turntablism about 7-8 years ago and i think you explained it well :)
Thanks 4 your help, I've been practising scratching, hopefully will put some in my next tenminmix.
Hey man, I would recommend Hee Haw Brayks (first one) by DJ Butchwax (aka DJ Flare) and Superseal Breaks by DJ Q-Bert. Hee Haw has one entire side made up of hundreads of samples with all the classic sounds repeated numerous times. Also Superseal is a skipless skratch record which has many cool samples to skratch with. All the best!
I don't have real turntables but this helps immensely, I just have to judge the "speed" of what's playing and the sensitivity I put on the pressure plates. Thanks :)
The two are fine, but to get (if you wish) the sound to sound as it should you need to be going at exactly the same speed as the turn table.
You look soo much like Richard Hammond from TopGear =D
Great Tuts you have, old but Gold ;)
excellent clear introduction, thanks for making that vid! I gotta give this a shot.
I dig this tutorial. Thanks for the tip...
Wow. I think even I can follow you. Thank you. I love music and would love to develop the talent to make my own. God Bless you.
this helped a lot when i first started djing thanks dude
the vinyl has a series of different scratchable "noise". If you just press play... (for an example)its varies of the word fresh . . . the word 1 2 3 or perhaps more. the other sounds are just solid "noise". When you move the crossfader, you actually are "cutting" the word/noise.
My explaination is not clear, but i hope it helps
Very good lesson! thanks for your teaching!!!
excellent explanation & teacher. I'd love to hang out with this guy! two thumbs up
Ohh.. thank you for this! Please, post more!
Could be a few things, 1 you need more weight on the arm, so ajust the weight at the back of the arm to go all the way forward
2 Make shure the complete unit that the arm is atached to is set al the correct height( you will see this by the black rubber going around the arm rest.
3 With some cartriges they come with a small weight fitted just below the headshell, see if that,s there.
4 Set you anty skating.
Try to log on th Q bert on youtube , he too has a few vids!
all the best Johnathan
It helps to get you'r finger to stick better to the 12"
But you could always use hand cream.
I think ur quality man thank u very much wish u cud teach 1 on 1 as I'm not good watching videos n remembering but I'm learning to scratch n I watch ur videos very closely n it helps n I enjoy the music
Awesome, ye sumone told me to take off the counter weight to scratch so now i know, thanks alot your a legend!
=]
Type in DJ Q-bert to learn to scratch. This is NOT the first scratch you should learn. A. he is using a channel fader not cross fader B. The first scratch you learn is a Baby Scratch which is without the fader and sounds much better than this. Credit to this bloke for giving his time up for so many tutorials. Almost all the equipment reviews I've watched have been done by this chap and he know's his stuff with DJ'ing. And a man after my own heart, vinyl purist.
you are freakin awesome at tutorial's! bravo!
cheers mate..very easy to understand nice and slow good teacher.. tanx :)
No way your back didn't hurt from this lol great vid
The best teacher on youtube :D
agree 👍
yo you are the man,
thanks, that's what it's all about . Breaking it down.
johnathan
WOW that was a better tutorial than i thought it was going to be. this is from somebody who does not know jack shit, very clear and concise thank you!
I’m watching this in 2018,still great
Keep up the great videos!!!!
thanks man this is a perfect tutorial .... well done.... very helpfull
Always helpful, thanks for the video skins!
Thanks for the tips amigo!
DUUUU !!! THis is really good for people eho wanna do this amazing teqnique
unquestionable!!! Records are better then CDs and ever been!
it's not only dependent on the drive type...one very important thing is the tonearm...i got some really shitty reloop-tts and the needle is jumping all the time although i got some good systems for scratching
on technics tts the needle doesn't jump
Yea i need to find one too especially with Ahh and Fresh samples
Hey Man that was great, Thanks bro Rock on
great tutorial :D really nice
This is a great tutorial, thanks for posting!
the "fresh" sound only lasts about 3-4 secs and is basicly just a sound. However this particular sound he uses is ony of the most used cuz it sounds great and gives is optimal for scratching to beats! U can recognize it all the way back to the beginning in the 80's
Great video with some good tops. Thanks
toDJineQ, thanks for the comment , ok i do it to help my finger get better grip oo the vinyl, but you can use hand cream too.
j
thanks. ive always wanted to know how they did those voices when i see those battles on movies and stuff!
