Yep, definitely a smallie for the first one. Their color/patterns can vary quite a bit just like largemouth depending on the habitat. Sometimes they are a real dark brown and sometimes they are a much lighter tan with more vivid patterns. Iowa isn't super well known for its fisheries, but there are some great ones, and it is easy to take for granted how much variety there is here. You get a little bit of everything. Some of those northern species like smallmouth, walleye, pike, musky, perch, but you also get great catfish, and largemouth.
Dude that’s awesome that you got to fish up here in Iowa! Iowa has some pretty cool fish in my opinion, weird locations of them too! I once saw a pike: In a pond!
Fished that can four straight years while attending U.of Iowa. Would buy 3 dozen minnows from Fin and Feather and have a blast. Never knew what you'd catch but most anglers go after those hybrids and walleye. You most likely hooked into a giant carp. Probably snagged, happens all the time. Thanks for the update on my favorite spot 30 years ago.
Thanks man, yeah I’m not sure at all what the one that got away was, all I know is when it realized it was hooked it started running. It was cut down in the video a little but it pulled drag in long stretches for about a minute and half off and on. A little clickbaitish for an intro but believe me when I say I was the most disappointed to not see what it was lol.
Yo vivo aki en coralville y boy a pescar a este lugar compro mis señuelos en find and feather yo pienso que era un big white bass yo saqué uno grande ahí casi 30 pulgadas saludos y bendiciones amigo 😊
Great video and great fish! I started my own TH-cam fishing channel a couple of months ago (I’m in Tulsa) and I really enjoyed your video. Keep up the good work!
Thats my favorite fishing spot and if you go out there with shrimp you will cach something.also there are roomers of a flat hed so big at that point that you need a chain to pull him in
glad to see you old lovers get together again - if you wear a glove on the hand you hold the fish with you won't drop it's head into the rocks again.....
That is according to the internet, not personal experience. Supposedly up to that dam, because it’s the last one before the Mississippi River, anything in the Mississippi can or does live in that section of the Iowa river. Thanks for the info!
good fishing....few years I fished this place, I only fish and release but seen a lot of my own people keeping them...it's too polluted please don't eat from this spillway....so many run off sewage running into the river OMG! no no no
Lol well hopefully they didn’t eat it then but I’m at least glad they were open to that and didn’t intend to harvest unless they were going to eat. I know that place has to be fished a lot.
Yea, our river is full of sweet surprises. Those "teens" that were fishing there actually have a YT channel @TheAvidFishermen. The fishing has only gotten better since this video released with every hybrid Striped Bass averaging 9+lbs and lots of double digits. The fish you lost either was a Double dig wiper or a paddle fish

Going to Iowa this coming semester any tips?
Nice walleye. Man I wanted to see what that big fish was. That 1st fish was a Sm bass, congrats on your 1st one and the drum. I never got a drum.

Great video man! I love random unplanned fishing trips. The bass looks like a small mouth to me.

Good to know, thanks for the info!
What lure were you using?
Berkeley jointed Flicker Shad

Walleye is the best eating freshwater fish ever.
I have seen a lot of poles bending and the line taking off but then the fish comes unhooked... in my experience it's been gar

The tug is my drug...
That is likely a meanmouth spotxsmallmouth hybrid (first fish)
Do you have an alarm clock on your rod?
I fish that same dam downtown
The last big one is carp fish!

But then my hands won’t smell like walleye
Where was this at....
Downtown Iowa City
Worked at the powerhouse and was able to fish that part
Where exactly is this place I would like to fish there

Never reel while your drag is releasing line. You will put twists into your line.
Never heard of paddle fish being in the Iowa River and lived here for 42yrs.

@@certifieddinks3943 Oh there is Paddle fish in the river there at the dam. My son has caught them. You catch them by snagging them

The sewage statement is so not true. I live down here and work at the university.
@@melrosehawkins8294 I wouldn't eat those hybrids or whitebass or walleyes, etc....will fish for others for fun though
A buffalo carp? It’s either a buffalo or a carp. Buffalo is a native species. A Carp is an invasive species.
Is anyone catching anything right now?
That big fish was rather a catfish or a pike
