I loved how the movie was "boring"
Like a boring family holiday, I can remember holiday resorts just like it and she nailed the feeling and tone and look of the resort.
The subtlety of Mescal's performance just blew away. What an exceptional actor.
I didnt prepare myself for this film. I walked into a movie theater and just bought a ticket for Aftersun, because the poster seemed quite lovely. I almost fell asleep when this long shot of Callum doing Taichi on the balcony came, and then my instinct just ticked, and I was thoroughly intrigued to see what would happen next.
I was super sad when I came out of the theater, but I didnt quite get what happened. A friend explained it to me on my way home, and I burst into tears on the bus. This film is so powerful and beautifully made. I really enjoy your essay; thank you for sharing!

My mum had the same experience! But she turned it off halfway because she thought it was boring but cried when I told her what happened!
I didn’t understand the film neither until I watched an analysis and I started to cry once I got it. I’ll definitely have to watch it again . I went in completely blind and I actually don’t know if that was a good idea.

I read that strictly speaking Frankie Corio was 10, as her 11th birthday was shortly after arriving in Turkey.
This is a great dissection. Thank you. I took away that Callum’s depression and mental health issues stemmed from his childhood trauma involving his mother- which is something he tries not to repeat with Sophie, always extending love to her mother even though they are not together. He spits at himself in fury when Sophie describes her symptoms of depression because despite his best laid plans, his illness is hereditary and inter generational.
Also, the rave for me was adult Sophie’s internal state/feelings about her dad and his death. Where she tries to process it all. At the end she hugs him because she misses him and pushes him away because he left her and she’s mad. The setting is the rave to reflect their conversation where Callum says “i always want you to talk to me about the drugs you take, boys you neet etc.”
My interpretation was that, as an adult, Sophie saw someone that looked like her dad at a club and it led her to remember/revisit this final trip with him. The club sequences with her as an adult are interrupted by her waking up next to her wife, so I figured that the ones after that, with her embracing him, were a fantasy of what she wishes she could have done. He walks from the airport into the flashing lights of the club, because that's the next time Sophie "sees" him.
This film does such an incredible job of making you have these visceral emotions from moments you’re not experiencing. I felt that I was watching something I had lived and was actually reliving the emotions. Like I was waking some long forgotten memories that filled my entire being. Couldn’t agree more on the ending, amazing video.
Good essay and for sure one of the best films of 2022. I can't say that I "enjoyed" it as such; it evoked a certain bittersweet nostalgia for events that I never experienced, and some nebulous feelings that were strong yet difficult to articulate. Ultimately, I appreciated the film more than I enjoyed it.
That describes how I felt...sort of.
Mark Kermode made the same kind of remark, like remembering something you know didn't happen but felt like it did.

We constantly worry that something will happen. BUT IT DOES ... just the danger is inside the father as a danger to himself.
Honestly I didn't even think of the flashing sequences as a rave, I pictured the flashing scenes as the kind of.. jumble of memories in our heads and how when we recall something we are only recalling what we remembered last time. When Callum walks back into the rave away from the holiday, it represents how important that trip was to both of them that they remember it so vividly compared to every other memory they've had together since. Maybe the rave sequences are real events in Sophie and Callum's mind later on in life neither of them want to remember as much as they remembered that holiday so long ago.

I love your take. I think for me it definitely does represent a rave or night club setting. Calum makes it very clear he loves dancing and I think apart from occasionally spending time with Sophie, that is all he does back home. Because he feels like he does not belong anywhere else. I also think as much as it makes him happy, it somewhat makes him worse - an addiction - and like I said in the video, it becomes his dark place.
i watched this for the first time the other day and when it an honor to go into this blindly and feel the emotion and shock of sitting there and thinking about what i jsut watched

Very good review. I might watch it when I am feeling better but you have definitely piqued my interest and given me an appreciation for a film that I might also never watch due to the triggering nature of the subject matter. Showing the how the director lets the moments breathe and even linger to allow the a patient audience to absorb the nuance and brevity of what might otherwise be mundane if something I always admire. I cant help but think of the shotgun scene in Funny Games where you are not allowed to look away from the shock of the violence displayed. This is drastically different subject matter but the idea is the same. Some scenes require real time digestion rather than forcing an emotion on the audience that is used to maintain tempo and interest in the developing story. Terrence Malick is another who uses this well. Thanks again.
Such a well written comment, I loved reading it. I hope eventually you can watch this film. Also a very good comparison to that scene in Funny Games. That horrible scene goes on for such a long time and my jaw was on the floor the whole scene.

I think it is his breathing, actually, non-coinciding with the image. But lateer it catches up with him when he is shown sleeping in the morning, and Sophie is watching him.

I had the same experience the first viewing. I was always waiting for something shocking/terrible to happen so I missed half of the subtle storytelling. I enjoyed it though. It was only when I watched a video essay on the movie and saw the scene of Paul walking into the dark roaring ocean, I thought jesus christ....it all clicked. Interesting is that it worked even with this sort of delayed understanding, the movie's imagery was actually pretty strong and it stuck in my mind. So much that I will take a long time before I'll be ready for a rewatch.

It is definitively my 2022 favorite.
As a chronically depressed person myself, I understood the importance of Caleb staying joyful and high-spirited for his daughter... That's a very excruciating state to be in.
I read this on another essay, and stuck with me; after leaving her at the airport he goes to the rave and then drawns himself in the sea (he's wearing the same clothes). Also the positioning of the camera on both scenes (sea and airport) of him walking away towards blackness signifies his peril.

It's one of the best films I've seen period, I'd have gave it all the Oscars!
When you talked about the ending scene with Under Pressure I started to tear up again.
What was also great about the movie was it wasn't pretentious, at it's core it was very simply told and wasn't even preachy. A lesser skilled director would have included blatant exposition or lectures on depression. This movie trusts you to come to your own exclusion.
Originally I thought her father was still alive and she had lost him to a possible addiction, I don't agree with that take now but you could argue it's as valid as any other as the end result was the same: it doesn't matter how she remembers what her father is going through, all we know is that she lost him.

People are comparing Aftersun and C'mon C'mon, and I just want to say that Frankie Corio portraying Sophie is a lot more sympathetic and less annoying to me than Woody Norman playing Jesse.

The photography was pretentious and drew too much attention to itself. A total distraction. We streamed to consider the movie as a purchase. Not buying. Like watching the grass grow. It had a hand-held home movie look and feel. One of those artsy independent films, that is more about technique and being clever, than it is about narrative, which seems a muddled memory piece and banal in the extreme. There isn't a thing we can do about this father's despair, except wallow in it to no purpose. One tires of therapy sessions placed on celluloid. Better they pay the therapist by the hour, than me pay for the movie ticket. And how many of us can afford to return to the movie theater twice to get the point? There are some movies that should have been books and not films. This is one of them. Performances, outstanding, but not enough to elevate this film out of the despair it lays on with a trowel.

@@sonnyross1ter Thank you for taking the time to respond. We always read reviews of the films we want to see. "Aftersun" got great reviews. In fact, we were quite taken by the review at the Ebert Group website. We just felt let down. We picked up on the father's despair early on. My husband and I would pause the streaming service, from time to time, and discuss the film. But having figured out what was happening, and early on, the film seemed subtle, but relentless, which only made the despair that much harder to endure. Your video analysis was well thought out, and gave the film it's due. We just feel that repeat viewings would not be our preference, and since we have an extensive film collection, both foreign and domestic, we decided to pass. Again, your video essay was top-notch. Sorry to disagree, but keep up the good work.
if you are unable to understand one of the most beautiful films ever made, the problem is yours, not the film's. sometimes films are not products to be sold to the public, sometimes they are pure works of art. Picasso did not paint with the intention of selling his paintings. The director owes nothing to the spectators. if you like boring family comedies well… watch those
@@GoCinq5 We don't watch boring family comedies, anymore than we like adult dramas, where despair is laid on with a trowel and repeated endlessly, just in case the "spectator" wasn't able to pick up on it in the first ten minutes. We comprehended the father's despair right out the gate. We got it. So climb down off your supposedly high-artistic horse, and where the horses rear-end is presently in the saddle. It didn't take us 90 minutes to "understand" the father, the daughter or the movie. Sometimes subtlety is a tip-off that what we're looking at is anything, but subtle. And from beginning to end, we were treated to nothing more than turgid, long-take variations of what was abundantly clear from the beginning. Oh, my, middle-class misery. Middle-class-misery- vacation-time, complete with overly-self-conscious camera angles. I mean, let us all take a jumble of our bad childhood memories, drain them of any hope, add long pretentious hand-held camera shots to the mix, and instead of going to therapy, throw the whole jumbled mess onto a move screen. Give us a break. Not all human situations are worthy of placing on the screen, simply because someone experienced them or imagined them. What is tiring are film critics, who see way more movies than the average movie goer, and when one comes along that they believe original, artistic ... usually eclectic, supposedly subtle (usually tedious), deliberative pacing (so little original material, what is there has to be stretched to the breaking point) and topped off with so much directoral earnestness, the nihilistic seems are showing. Middle-class misery vacation time, complete with mud-bath. Pass the Kleenex, I'm about to cry uncontrollably.

I think it is entirely better than EEAAO. I also think EEAAO is massively overrated, for me it was just a solid film with pretty bad pacing, it felt much longer than it’s actual runtime. Great performances tho.
