- Matt Blakely welcomed us into his realm and talked about the outboards he uses on the Billy Talent tour. The conversation took place at the Nova Rock Festival, directly from the FOH. It features two of our very important devices, the Dictator Vari-u Compressor and the Empress EQ. Matt is an excellent storyteller; we hope you enjoy it.

Man, I have been learning about music and I think these sound engineers don't get enough credit!
I was at that show. The only thing I can say that wasn’t perfect was the kick, it was a little too loud/subby. Kinda took over the PA at times. I was standing just a couple of meters in front of the two FOH tents, right in the middle of the stage. But the vocals were on point!!!!
I assume he also mixed the at Rock im Park two weeks ago, sounded phenomenal!
Does every band at a festival get their own sound guy and to bring their console & racks? How does does work?
Typically the bands that are on early will be mixed by the 'house' engineer or by their own engineer using the house console. Headliners will bring their own engineer, console, racks etc.
During the day there usually isn't enough time or space at festival to be setting up a load of racks for a band that isn't headlining.
Really depends on the band though and what they bring!
@@ryanbird109 thanks!
In the case of headliner bands, yes, they have their own engineer and a complete setup. If it's not a headliner act, they usually use the default FOH mixer with some additional personal racks, but they also have their own engineer.
Many concerts get recorded and put on youtube, do the FOH Engineers do the recording mix aswell or is the Broadcast mixer in hand for that?
Because many recordings from band shows sound awfull in recordings or on broadcast.
I got the chance to meet Matt at GMM 2022. Great guy!
