Followed your lead I put the carriage bolts on the inside, I got the same tractor supply box, put bigger bolts so I could use the big washers silicone caulk around the clamp holes and a bead around the lid ( hopefully it will be water proof).
Have the same carrier and just purchased the same cargo box from Tractor Supply. I bought a piece of 3/8" plywood which I will cut to fit the contours of the interior and bolt through the plywood to the carrier using a 3/8" X 1 1/2" carriage head bolts , fender washers on the bottom side and nylock nuts.
Thank you for the video.. I got the idea for a long vacation and keeping things secure when the SUV is moving plus giving me a peace of mind that things are safe + keeping things a bit more harder to steal
Thanks for the great video. We just bought a B Plus RV that has almost no outside storage. This will be perfect. Amazon wants $110 for the hitch and TS wants $130 for the box. Still a bargain.
Good idea! I've got the same box and I've tried it on my cargo carrier as well and found out it's not as wide as the inside dimensions of the cargo carrier is, si I ended up using an old full size truck tool box that fits perfectly! I still use the poly box for heavier tools on my utility trailer and it works great for that application! Great video! Hopefully it helps others decide on how to mount a box on their cargo carriers.
Thanks for the video. I just ordered the same carrier last night for my 18 Camry with a class 2. I didn’t know what I was going to use to contain cargo. Didn’t really want to go with tubs or bags. I was thinking of flipping those tray bolts before I saw your video. Will do it for sure. Did a stock check at TSC and they have those boxes in stock locally. Excited to get it set up.
Doesn’t look like you’ll need it, but Aluminum bar instead of washers would give you a lot more surface area. Easy to work with and can use smaller bolts.
Note : use small portions of flat metal to help distribute the clamping weight. I subscribed I about to start the van life and I need storage ! I am going to totally use this idea thank you very much for sharing ! I need a place to store my lead acid batteries for my solar and tools/ misc “lead acid needs to be vented” I don’t have the money for lithium yet! So this will work out amazing and doesn’t kill my pockets!! Thank you very much!
That is so encouraging I get paid in a few days I’m pretty excited to get going! It would be cool one day to meet up and I could learn a thing or two from you since I’m new! Thank you so much again!
2014 Toyota Sienna se the front wheel drive version. I have it gutted and installed a clothes hanger and new sub floor so far just waiting on payday to move forward I have a hitch coming and rear suspension stiffeners coming as well!
The hitch and suspension upgrade should be here wed and I get paid that day as well! So I can probably finish up the inside I sold some weights today and will be buying a small quiet generator today used of course so I’m excited:).
Great Idea - thanks for the video. How has this held up? Any use in sub-zero temps? Deforming in heat? There is one critical review of the box on tractor supply suggesting it fell apart when hot.
Nice! What's the max tongue weight rating on your hitch? I'm shopping for one to add to my car for a similar setup and am wondering if 200 lbs is enough.
I found my cargo rack would bounce while Driving. Caused the car to be difficult to keep going straight. This affects economy too. Solution= bungee cord that rack to the rear of the car to reduce oscillations. My trip to quartzsite from Louisiana was terrible I added the bungee cords my return trip was excellent. It made the car feel like it just didn't want to go down the center of my Lane. Hope this helps.
Mine doesn’t move. There is a screw in bolt that tightens the bar. If I put a socket to it it won’t move at all. Steady as she goes! Great solution though.
Hey CJ! I don’t know about the wheels although I had considered getting a little 300 lb camper that can be towed by a motorcycle. But decided on the box instead. The cargo carrier I got at etrailer. Awesome people there! How’s Louisiana?
@@ChasinSimplicity thanks! Just ordered the cargo crate, but doing a smaller box just because i found for for $16 by Sterlite. Just need for a few things but down the road may pick up that tractor supply. I was wondering if you recall what size bolts you bought? And if you d had nah issues with loosened bolts/nuts throughout the time you’ve had it Thanks!
Hiya. No issues with the bolts getting loose. Ever. Used nyloc nuts and they don’t back off. Size I couldn’t say I just went to ace hardware and got nice heavy duty bolts and graduated sizing washers
I’ve drug it through mud back roads and rain etc across the country. The only thing I have seen get in is dust. It’s not airtight by any stretch so I just put stuff in it that I don’t care much about! Stuff that usually stays dirty anyway. Like tarps, sealed containers. Etc
Oilfield guy here. Pro tip: store your stuff inside black hefty trash bags inside the box. Then it doesn’t quite matter about dust/water intrusion. FYI: I’ve only ever had dust intrusion. Never water, although I did throw some extra silicone around the seal. I’ve had this box in the back of every work truck I’ve had since ‘08. Sun faded, but still good as new.
Yessir! I knew I wanted to do something. I watched a bunch of your videos. Then I was like ok he spent too much for my taste. Somehow I can do it cheaper. It’s not as nice as yours but it does serve my purpose. I need to link you in the video and throw up a card. I missed the drawing today I hope that someone that needed it won!
I scanned through the comments and didn’t see it mentioned. The U-bolt that you have anchored in the middle of the box. You have the metal plate on the wrong side. It should be used inside the box and acts like a big two hole washer and distributes the load across the span of the u-bolt. Other than that, it looks like a good setup.
@@ChasinSimplicity do you have a link to this u-bolt? and the size of blot and washer? i already got the hitch and the box, just wait for this last piece
Hi there! I unfortunately do not have links for the bolts or even remember the size at this point it’s been so long since I built it. It was easy though. The grate on the platform has so many holes it made it incredibly easy to find something that fit. I just went to the local ace hardware. Purchased the u bolts and washers (several washers of progressive size) and then a nylock nut for each one. If you take the grate with you at least in your trunk you could test fit the ubolts in the parking lot. I hope this helps! Good luck on the build.
@@brianlee5942 My apologies, I don't have a video of the cargo carrier I built. My comment was a mocking of the slapchop commercial on TV. This video covers the bases perfectly for a cargo carrier & is much better than the one I built. Sorry for causing confusion.
Hey, Mr. CS...(I don't know your first name). Great looking set up and I hope it works for you. But IF you get tired of the vehicle thing then swing by Tennessee and buy my sweet little Jayco 14 footer. Cute as can be and it's going cheap. I was thinking about a Prius but I've now decided on a Promaster City with a Wayfarer kit. I have to sell my camper first. Anybody in TN want to buy my camper? Have fun at the RTR and we want to see lots of vids....:-)
Ha! First name is Galvain. (It’s old French). If I go full time again I would consider a trailer. Jayco makes great stuff but I would probably get a scamp or casita style and do it up. Who knows I change my mind hourly. Tennessee is a great state. My great great great grandpa fought at the battle of franklin in the civil war.
What a cool name, Galvain! A fiberglass trailer would be the way to go for sure. But mine is a cutie and selling for about 18k less...:-) Actually, though, your set up now with the cargo carrier is really nice. Happy trails...:-)
Nice box. You could have used that long flat u bracket washer that you have on the bottom, you could have used it on the top as a long thin washer.
Good point! Maybe on the next one.
Followed your lead I put the carriage bolts on the inside, I got the same tractor supply box, put bigger bolts so I could use the big washers silicone caulk around the clamp holes and a bead around the lid ( hopefully it will be water proof).

Did a nearly identical set up without knowing it but then went with your advice on the box. Love it so far! Thx!
Happy to hear it working out. Mine has been very useful!
Fantastic. Great implemention and solution. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Love the idea! Hope all has been well - cheers!
Thank you!
I needed to do this, heading on a family trip from Louisiana to Colorado. We drive xl suv and still find a way to run out of roo.
I hope the trip went well! This box has held up well over the years
👌💭..nice thing about that plastic box is that it's light, & the almost flat top can be a meal prep table. Just what I'm looking for; multipurpose!
I am glad you like. I use it as a chair sometimes

Have you had any trouble with water getting in while driving in a storm?
Never. Dry as a bone. Been great two years later
How is the exhaust in the car? Does it point down or at the box? I’m looking to do something like this for my Miata to carry my golf clubs
I believe it pointed towards it but there was a ton of space so it never concerned me personally on that car.
Great Idea - thanks for the video. How has this held up? Any use in sub-zero temps? Deforming in heat? There is one critical review of the box on tractor supply suggesting it fell apart when hot.
I’ve camped with it all over the USA no issues whatsoever. Hot. Cold. Put it on my 4runner drug it through mud. No problem. Pretty hearty!
Sorry, I don't see the info for the hitch assembly? and do think there is a swing arm option for the trey?
I got the hitch from etrailer. They are vehicle specific. I think a company called rolla? Makes a swing arm option.
Good idea. I may have to try on my mustang. Ty for sharing. TC🌷
Thank you for watching. Let me know how it turns out if you decide to do this!
Thank you! Glad you mention the fuel economy while empty.
Did youtube removed the links?
I just checked and looks like they are still there. The random bolts and such I did not have a link for. Just the carrier and the box!
When you get a chance let me know how this ended up working out. Great video. 👍🏼

Agreed! We shall see!
Might have better stability if you put a long piece of wood inside the box with the hardware through it
That’s actually a great idea. I have drug it across the country twice now and it’s still perfect so it did work!
Chasin' Simplicity I just bought this box yesterday and will be doing the same thing. Tractor Supply actually had hardware sold by weight
