Lupita had a MOMENT in 2014 that very rarely happens for fresh new actresses. She came on the scene swinging, everyone talking about her beauty, her grace and elegance. Designers were clobbering to dress her. It just felt right that year for her to win the Oscar. We haven't had an actress hold the general public's eye like that since her in my opinion.

I remember a friend asking me how 12 Years a Slave was a few hours after I saw it and replying that I could never watch it again. I cried like a baby! Nyongo deserved that Oscar!
In my opinion I think that Oprah should had been been nominated for The Butler in supporting actress. I think that Lawrence was miscast as the wife and Adams and her should have switched roles. Lupita Nyongo was absolutely heartbreaking as Patsy in 12 years a Slave
The Academy snubbing Lupita for "Us" was a travesty. The film wasn't the best, but her performance as a set of clones was supreme. The Academy definitely shows clear bias towards horror films. It's crazy. Unfortunately, Lupita's starring in another horror film. It's another sequel to "A Quiet Place," which comes out this June. I've heard very great things about her performance in it, but the chances that she'll be recognized and awarded are slim to none. I also read that she has recently signed on to star in a film with Chloe Grace Moretz. It's a story about two female MMA fighters. Lupita's supposed to portray an older former champion who's motivated to reclaim her title, and Chloe is supposed to portray an up-and-coming phenom. Maybe that'll be the film that gets Lupita back on these award committees' radar.
What a great year for film. So many great movies. Gravity Captain phillips Her Gravity Philomena Saving mr banks All is lost Nebraska Wolf of wall Street
Hi Brian! Great video as always. In light of retrospective Oscar races, will you be making a video on Participant Media shutting down? I feel like this should be talked about, considering how important it was to the previous award cycles.
At that time, J-Law was on her rising career and already won an Oscar for SLP and Lupita was a newcomer that stole the movie. People loves newcomers over someone who already won an award.
Lawrence was not miscast; she was perfectly cast for that role because she was playing an immature hot wife who has no clue what she wants, and it was completely believable in that period of time. I don’t get what is so special about Lupita in that slave movie because she literally does nothing; she has a minor role compared to JLaw in AH. The fact that her Oscar clip scene feels so forced and fake, yet she gets praise and JLaw gets criticized for giving an impressive performance.
LUPITA was helped by the fact that it was a Cinderella story, her character being heartbreaking in a best picture film and she WAS THE FASHION MOMENT THAT YEAR. But seeing how Emma Stone, Frances Mcdormand, Christoph Walz, Day Lewis won another acting Oscars so easily I think THIS RACE WAS VEEERY TIGHT. Doesn't look like that in retrospect maybe but if we get the fact I would be surprised if it was only few votes as it shows that they don't give a dn if you already and recently have won
Yep, unfortunately Us is the only juicy role she's played since TYAS, the rest have been kinda lack-lustre... cross fingers for A Quiet Place:Day One!!
My winner would be June Squibb,I'm fine with Lupita's win but I don't think it's one for the ages, she doesn't really give much dimension to Patsy,I really like Roberts and Hawkins but for me Lawrence is not good in AH,firstly she is miscast and OTT and becomes unbelievable as a person.
what i think really sucks, and this is coming from some who really loves the Lupita win, is that if Jennifer had won she would have gotten soo much hate and backlash of horrible people, more than she got a few years later and that would have had nothing to do with the film or her performance, just because people loves to hate on popular woman, just ask Anne Hathaway i really like Jennifers performance and especially the part she really is a supporting player, which i think she should do more; she was fun and the idea was that she was young. but Lupita was amazing really, its hard to think it was really her first huge role on a film and she nailed it; its really a crime this still its her only nomination, when she should have at least one more... btw, Lupita walking upstage was like seeing some levitate, she never look more beautifull btw, their pic backstage "fighting" for the Oscar is hilarius
At the time, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was a voting body of around 100 starf***ers who loved getting wined and dined. Now it's a few hundred - and they've diversified - but still, I can't understand why people take them seriously. Their credibility is on par with the Golden Raspberries. Anytime they award something of quality, it's purely by accident.
Amy was sooooo so good in this movie, though... I can't imagine someone else playing that character. They should've gotten someone around Adams' age to play Rosalyn, maybe older, even.
Lupita was #1 for me! But I felt Sally Hawkins was a solid #2. She really matched Cate Blanchett that year in “Blue Jasmine”. Hawkins Ginger was a perfect offset for Cate's Jasmine! Really great lived-in performance by Hawkins! Julia Roberts I felt was category fraud, she’s just as much if not more lead than Meryl Streep was in “August Osage County”.
I thought Silver Linings Playbook and Jen's performance in it were both incredibly overrated, with neither worth a rewatch, but I did enjoy American Hustle, and I thought Jen was so much better in a "less is more" type of way. Her pig-headed pathetic yet fun character absolutely stole the show, and that line about her deflecting blame the microwave burning and going "Thank Gawd for me" is so quotable. She was the best part of the movie for me. Lupita in 12YaS had to give such an emotionally raw performance and convey devestation, heartbreak and torment mostly without dialogue. It was stomach churing to watch, but after the movie was over I didn't recall her character having any kind of closure or character arc. She just seemed to play the part of the forgotten sufferer. So that oscar ceremony was really about popularity or performance. I personally wanted to give the win to Jen because I preferred her fun performance and character, but I also had to admit Lupita gave a much more groundbreaking and heavy hitting performance that had to have sapped her soul, so she deserved the win in a performance over popularity way, which is what art really should be, quality over quantity. It didn't help Jen's case that she had just won the year before either. Trying to balance the popularity factor.
Lupita should have never lost anything the Jennifer it was a far superior performance and she should have swept awards season. Not to take away from Jennifer as she was awesome too.
This is why Twister, Friday the 13th and Back to the Future are ALL they have as output. Movies that weren't much to begin with, but nevertheless originals that shine brightly due to the current generation in the business.
You really should've done the best actor category and how both chiwetel and leo lost?! Also, Jonah should've won supporting. Wasn't my fav amy Adams role but still would've liked to see her win.
I’ve been postponing watching 12 Years a Slave. I am too sensitive, so I know it’ll be emotionally heavy to watch. Women Talking is the heaviest film I’ve ever seen, but I didn’t know that prior to watching it. Otherwise I may have postponed it also.
American Hustle could have easily won in many other years few big Oscar's like actress, supporting actress, costumes maybe even picture. The problem was that in 2013 Blanchett gave what was already then received as an all timer performance, Great Gatsby had one of the flashiest costumes in the last two dacades and was a box office hit, and 12 Years a Slave was too much for Oscars to ignore. Which left Lawrence as the best place to reward the film at the time and it was close but Nyongos narrative and even more Oscary film prevailed.
Colorism is still a barrier for her for lead roles and black women in general are stuck in Supporting hell. So, while it is nice to finally see some breakthrough with A Quiet Place (and no doubt she will crush that), the Academy still has issues with the horror genre.
She would've taken it had she not won the previous year. I wish it would've went to Riva instead so that she would've won here and Lupita would've gotten more traction for Us and could've and should've won.
In my humble opinion no it’s not. I can however say it honestly having watched it. I kept waiting for the greatness to hit me . The hype was extraordinary the movie not so much.
That Lawrence performance in American Hustle is among the worst oscar nominated performances I’ve seen. Thank god they got it right with giving Nyong’o the prize instead.
Lupita won due to politics and the need for diversity. It is that simple. What was fascinating is how people kept trying to read meaning and nuance into a performance that was basically getting beat up for 10 minutes. They were not treating her as an actress, but as a symbol. Lawrence won the majority of the major critics awards and simply had a harder, more complex performance. She saved the film from a supporting role. It is just more memorable. If someone can explain what Lupita did that a dozen other actresses could not have done, let me know. But I remember people being so desperate to explain how allegedly brilliant she was that they would point to things like her humming while playing with a doll in the background. At that point it was no longer an acting debate. It was special pleading. And Lawrence knew it. She was not even allowed to campaign and openly did not want to win. She knew what the backlash would be.
“Mega talented”? Lawrence? Year 2012, I went to the theatre to watch “Hunger Games”, I was bored and forgot about it immediately, except for ONE THING, and me and my friend went to see “SLP”, and just couldn’t seat there, we walked out in middle of the film, that was boring and forgot about it immediately, except for ONE THING. Lawrence. I was shocked how this girl even got into movies, so wooden, zero charisma and obviously serious miscast in both movies. And when I heard that she won the Oscar for that, I couldn’t believe it! What the hell! In the world where actors like Leo still being overlooked for years this girl takes home big prize🤦♀️ So undeserved! Of course she fell on the way to the stage😂 Years and years I still was bitter about it, and answer came in the moment when HW was exposed and he as I find out was producer of this movie. And everything made sense. Of course. He bought that the way he did for Gwyneth and SiL🚩🚩🚩🚩 No wonder her career went downhill after giant elephant got busted and no longer could get her up 😊 MO
She should have won 2x by now- but as usual yet again, another supporting perfomance about slavery won. 2014 were a safe Oscar’s. JLaw on American Hustle is hilariously wicked- something fresh and new, but I guess screaming for a soap is more compelling- but that’s the thing with supporting categories; are tiresome obligatory charity for the underdogs. I mean, even Julia was the second more stronger after JLaw.
Gee, I wonder why 12YAS won. I also wonder why Ellen was the host (We saw your boobs). Probably the same reason that American Sniper didn't win Best Picture.
I read somewhere that Angelina Jolie was offered Jennifer’s role in AH. I can’t shake the thought of such great casting, she would’ve been great in the part and would’ve absolutely snatched the Oscar.

I was delighted that Lupita won the Oscar over Jennifer. While both performances were fantastic, Lupita's was slightly more memorable to me.
There was nothing special about Lupita's acting.
It was the usual slavery story
@@tdad8683An excellent slavery story was 12 Years a Slave 🙂
I'm so glad that people have soured on American Hustle, I felt so alone back in the day as a hater when the movie came out
Costume design was the only quality feature
@@thankyoujodiand the music! But besides that it’s just not that good imo

Hi Brian! Great video as always. In light of retrospective Oscar races, will you be making a video on Participant Media shutting down? I feel like this should be talked about, considering how important it was to the previous award cycles.
I applauded so loudly when Christoph Waltz announced Lupita as the winner. It was so well deserved.
Lupita has such an infectious smile. 🥰😚💝💕
excellent debate! Hugs from Brazil!
At that time, J-Law was on her rising career and already won an Oscar for SLP and Lupita was a newcomer that stole the movie. People loves newcomers over someone who already won an award.
I remember that lee daniels the butler movie. Oprah was getting in for best supporting actress everywhere. The hype for the movie just died out
I always thought Jennifer Lawrence was embarrassingly miscast in American Hustle.
@@RooneyJones her getting a beatdown from Fassbender scene itself was enough for Lupita's win, imo
@@RooneyJones I disagree.
I do like her American Hustle performance but not enough for back to back Oscar wins. They made the right call
I’ve been waiting for this!!!
MY LUPITA!!!
When Jennifer Lawrence is dancing and dusting and her hair, and the Wings song. Holy Jesus!! And the scene with Amy Adam’s in the bathroom. Adore.
Lovely video as always! I’ve never commented this but I love how you introduce yourself with your full name ❤
I was so disappointed with the BAFTAs for giving Jennifer Lawrence best supporting actress for American hustle instead of lupita
I remember this race being so close. And I was so conflicted because I loved (and still love) both of those women.
Unrelated, but congratulations to Alfonso.
The best type of video. Please do more
Lupita not getting nominated for Us is absolute bs
Plzz do a video of birdman over boyhood.
Yep, unfortunately Us is the only juicy role she's played since TYAS, the rest have been kinda lack-lustre... cross fingers for A Quiet Place:Day One!!
Please do Matthew McConaughey or Eddie Redman race for best actor
Thanks, Brian. I agree totally. Lupita was unbeatable in that amazing role!
My winner would be June Squibb,I'm fine with Lupita's win but I don't think it's one for the ages, she doesn't really give much dimension to Patsy,I really like Roberts and Hawkins but for me Lawrence is not good in AH,firstly she is miscast and OTT and becomes unbelievable as a person.
what i think really sucks, and this is coming from some who really loves the Lupita win, is that if Jennifer had won she would have gotten soo much hate and backlash of horrible people, more than she got a few years later and that would have had nothing to do with the film or her performance, just because people loves to hate on popular woman, just ask Anne Hathaway
i really like Jennifers performance and especially the part she really is a supporting player, which i think she should do more; she was fun and the idea was that she was young. but Lupita was amazing really, its hard to think it was really her first huge role on a film and she nailed it; its really a crime this still its her only nomination, when she should have at least one more... btw, Lupita walking upstage was like seeing some levitate, she never look more beautifull
btw, their pic backstage "fighting" for the Oscar is hilarius
Chiwetel should have won best actor instead of mathew mccouanghey.
Agreed
Either him or DiCaprio.
@@poett8875 Yes!
The golden globes ain't shit giving jennifer Lawrence that best supporting actress award instead of lupita
Lawrence was so miscast in American Hustle. She was too young. Adams and her should have switched roles.
Wrong.
Amy was sooooo so good in this movie, though... I can't imagine someone else playing that character. They should've gotten someone around Adams' age to play Rosalyn, maybe older, even.
I STRONGLY DISAGREE
Not sure about American Hustle…but she was kinda miscast/too young for her role in Silver Linings Playbook. 🤷🏻♂️
Wrong! Jennifer was perfect..but the other actresses are actually too old 😂
Lupita was #1 for me!
Can you do a Oscar nomination ranking for Renee Zellweger Plz.
Can u do for Michelle Yeoh vs Cate Blanchett ?
You really should've done the best actor category and how both chiwetel and leo lost?! Also, Jonah should've won supporting. Wasn't my fav amy Adams role but still would've liked to see her win.
Lupita Nyong'O deserved to win in 2019 again for Us!! Either her or Alfre Woodard in Clemency.
She was not looking right as 30 something
Cate actually holds the record for most wins for a single film in the acting catagory with 42 wins!
What film?
@@MichaelSmith-zx5lwblue Jasmine
Lupita had the better role plain and simple.
The Awesomeness that Is (JLaw) Continues 👊😎✊
Jennifer Lawrence anytime - All The time 😊👍 My Favorite Actress!!! 👍👊😊✊♈🍁♈
Is American Hustle worth the watch? I’ve always meant to watch it but it’s slipped my mind time and time again 😂
In my humble opinion no it’s not. I can however say it honestly having watched it. I kept waiting for the greatness to hit me . The hype was extraordinary the movie not so much.
If you like costumes, sure.
@@thankyoujodi Good soundtrack, too. But to me, the film felt like a montage of deleted scenes.
That Lawrence performance in American Hustle is among the worst oscar nominated performances I’ve seen. Thank god they got it right with giving Nyong’o the prize instead.
So glad Lupita won!!!!! Jennifer is SO OVERRATED!!!!!! Lupita ROCKS!!!!!!
I love sandra bullock!
Reason 3 is the one. If Jessica Chastain won the previous year, I'm feeling pretty certain Jennifer Lawrence would've won this race.
Julia Roberts was really good at august osage county esp the eat your fish scene, compared to Jennifer Lawrence, Julia is next to lupita
The better performance won
I was excited to see American Hustle, but what a letdown.
In the world where actors like Leo still being overlooked for years this girl takes home big prize🤦♀️
So undeserved! Of course she fell on the way to the stage😂
Years and years I still was bitter about it, and answer came in the moment when HW was exposed and he as I find out was producer of this movie. And everything made sense. Of course. He bought that the way he did for Gwyneth and SiL🚩🚩🚩🚩
No wonder her career went downhill after giant elephant got busted and no longer could get her up 😊
MO
She should have won 2x by now- but as usual yet again, another supporting perfomance about slavery won. 2014 were a safe Oscar’s. JLaw on American Hustle is hilariously wicked- something fresh and new, but I guess screaming for a soap is more compelling- but that’s the thing with supporting categories; are tiresome obligatory charity for the underdogs. I mean, even Julia was the second more stronger after JLaw.
Julia Roberts did the best among all the nominees.
Unrelated but i hope mcqueen wins director for blitz 🎉
Gee, I wonder why 12YAS won. I also wonder why Ellen was the host (We saw your boobs). Probably the same reason that American Sniper didn't win Best Picture.
I don’t know what you are talking about 😅 I think JL performance is so over the top and… just bad. Plus she obviously was miscast
I read somewhere that Angelina Jolie was offered Jennifer’s role in AH. I can’t shake the thought of such great casting, she would’ve been great in the part and would’ve absolutely snatched the Oscar.
I actually loved Julia’s performance the most out of all 5. Lupita was 3rd and Lawrence last. She was miscast
Why are we asking why? She was never a good actress. Mediocre maybe but never great.
Another award that Harvey paid for. Jennifer is an amazing actress, but Emmanuelle Riva was nominated for Amour and that should’ve been the winner.
Weinstein wasn't even a producer for American Hustle 😒 Why would he help the competition?
@@ellieh0397 No, I’m talking about “Silver Linings”, which is also mentioned in this video.
@@Nick-us6tz my bad, sorry. I actually don't mind her win there, she was the best part of Silver linings for me and it was nice seeing someone so young get it
@@ellieh0397 I do mind it because all those young actresses winning in Harvey’s films was 90 % of the times people getting paid off to vote for his movies. If they ever have the bravery to investigate they will see the pattern that they all followed.
Honestly it’s interesting think what would happen if Weinstein didn’t have that much pull at the time
Julia Roberts brought the best performance. My only issue is that it's a lead performance. I´m not a fan of Lupita performance, a bit overacting. Lawrence performance was funny at least.
Emma Stone... Again 😂
Jennifer Lawrence was HORRIBLE in American Hustle. Yet another of her way over the top "look at me everyone, I'm acting!! I'm acting REALLY hard here" performances. Not to mention she was way too young for that role. Talk about a miscast. Literally the most overrated actress in Hollywood history. 🤮🤮
An idea
Worst Foreign Language Film that won Oscar. The Answer a Jean Jaques Annaud film Black and Whit in Color. Possible the worst win in any cathegory ever. Learn about 1977 Oscar. The worst film with the best campaign strategy. Fake but works.
For this Hawkins should won, was the best by todo far (well I haven't seen or pay attention to Roberts)
Lawrence was always overrated and only won her oscars with a certain Miramax owner's influence. Lupita was deserving of hers.
I was more impressed with Jennifer's role in American Hustle.
Lupita's role was nothing special, just the usual whooping seen in slave movies.
