  • Travel to Lake Chiemsee by steam train - Chiemsee-Railway
The legendary steam train dating back to 1887 snorts and whistles its way along the 1.8 km route from Prien station down to Prien/Stock harbour.
Embark on a journey back in time, take a seat in the original lounge car and listen to the puffing of the steam locomotive.
Lake Chiemsee is easily accessible and is an excursion that combines many attractions and destinations: a steam railway, trip on a paddle steamer, island hopping, the magnificent palace of the fairytale King Ludwig II, a monastery with freestanding bell tower, rambling fishing village, beautiful coves and picturesque landscapes.
Set out on a day-trip and discover the many highlights of Lake Chiemsee.
Your day at Lake Chiemsee could look like this...
Climb aboard the historic steam railway whilst it huffs and puffs its way down to the harbour in Prien/Stock. Then jump on the steam boat and head out to the "Bavarian Sea". The scenic crossing takes you over to unique islands.
Once on Herreninsel, visit the magnificent palace of the fairytale King Ludwig II. Don't forget to explore the island's natural beauty during a short walk. With a bit of luck, you might spot a deer wandering around.
Too far for you? Then you should at least explore the beautiful palace garden and water features.
Not enough? Then hop straight back onto the boat and continue to Fraueninsel. Saunter through the pretty fishing village and admire the Frauenwörth monastery.
On the return journey to Prien, round off an eventful day with stunning views of the Bavarian mountains.
Like a delightful painting. Lake Chiemsee. The islands. The mountains. Picture-book Bavaria. Let yourself by carried away - on the steam ship, to the islands, over to Herrenchiemsee Palace.
Affectionately referred to as the "Bavarian Sea", Chiemsee is Bavaria's largest lake, covering an area of 80 square kilometres, with a circumference of approx. 64 km and a maximum depth of 73.4 m.
Lake Chiemsee was originally 250 m deep, but the Tiroler Achen river to the south has been shifting sand and clay from the mountains into the lake for thousands of years. If you were to stack the annual deposits of suspended matter on top of each other, they would amount to a 42 m high football pitch.
But there's no need for you to hurry to visit the lake: it's expected to survive for another 7,000 to 8,000 years. Plenty of time for you to discover it at your leisure!
Baroque splendour lures visitors to Herreninsel
The fairytale palace of fairytale King Ludwig II
The famous Herrenchiemsee Palace is the final and most magnificent edifice built by fairytale King Ludwig II. The palace was intended to surpass its historic predecessor, the Palace of Versailles built by Sun King Louis XIV. Even though it was never completed, Herrenchiemsee is a perfect example of splendour and beauty.
The Royal Palace is about a 15-minute walk from the pier on Herreninsel. The Palace attracts visitors like a magnet, with its grandiose Great Hall of Mirrors, many fascinating state rooms, breathtaking marble State Staircase and surprising "magic table".
Guided tours take place throughout the day, allowing access to around 20 magnificent rooms. At the end of the tour, you can take a horse-drawn carriage back to the pier.
    Royal tranquillity and majestic views
Those venturing further from the fairytale palace will discover the quiet corners of this beautiful island. Wander through the Palace Gardens and admire the glittering water features. Or recharge your batteries whilst walking through the calm, shady deciduous woods. Enjoy the wonderful views of the lake and nearby mountains from the lakeside path.
