Awesome Interview! Hear me out on this Gary: You should call this "Goats and Beard" Podcast
John is truly a class act. What a humble and impressive guy!
I could listen to you both talk about Barkley for as long as it takes you to do a loop. I love the Jasmin bog shoe story but suspect as a vet that that isn’t even in the top 10 most disgusting things she’s had to do. Many thanks for sharing your insights 👏🙏
Great interview Gary and John, both of you are a huge inspiration to Myself, an Ultra Runner who has completed 76 Ultras. There is such a primal instinct that comes with our sport. We find different emotional and spiritual aspects of ourselves that We never knew existed otherwise.
Great interview, enjoyed the banter between you both! Favourite bit: "your kids asked me, why does Daddy look so much worse than Ihor?" [out of the mouths of babes...]
Wow, John Kelly still hasn't changed shirts since the race! ;o)
Wow. I love this. I’m one of the recreational marathoners John spoke of and I’ve always respected the effort and planning that goes into something like this, but hearing about those spreadsheets helps to put it into perspective even more. Go John! Representing TN well!
the candy breakdown is hilarious
This could have been 3 hours long and still would have been too short of a podcast! Two absolute legends!
Another excellent interview! Gary’s interviews are the best and John was very interesting to listen to. Congrats to John on his third finish!
Living in the UK, I had to Google “little debbie christmas tree cakes”!
Oldest Barkley finisher, come on Gary, the people want to see it... 😉
Goo goo clusters! Had them on a trip to Florida in ‘96 and on all my subsequent visits to US have never found a trace of them or anyone who’d heard of them so thought they’d gone or I’d misremembered. Sounds like I was just visiting the wrong states 😀
Can confirm- goo goo clusters are excellent. Will use them in up coming races. Obviously, THAT is the secret to success.
across all interviews; someone who has experience in the interview topic should be mandatory....good play guys
Awesome show. Brilliant interview. Thank you so much Gary and John. 🏃♂️👍😀
this needed to be longer
Amazing interview thank you for that Barkley "candy". It was a real treat for those of us that can't get enough Barkley fixes
Thanks Greg and John for a great interview. Loved to hear from yall
It works, until it doesn't work, then you improvise!
Have to imagine that John is a frequent customer of the Mast Store candy barrels after that nutrition breakdown.
I wonder whether and how one can make a living of ultrarunning. I mean, for example, how much money does John get from La Sportiva for finishing a third time?
Not very many ultra runners make a full time living at it. Not many runners do, period. John has a full time job as a data scientist, Gary is a run coach and race director, etc. but most people who make a living at it have multiple streams of income through sponsorships and social media.
I am an obese, fat ass 32-year-old male who doesn’t exercise and eats like shit, but goddamnit. Every time I look at a ladder from now on, I’m gonna be thinking to myself, “don’t pull a John Kelly 😊 “
😂
What a legend. Great effort John.
great interview! well worth a watch
Lol
Awesome to listen!! Gary, you should go there, run 6 seconds, turn around, and grab the gate. I think Laz would laugh along!
Very excited! Love listening to John's wisdom!!
the cheap blur is more distracting :)
I'm not a fan of the background blur either
I love a Pay Day because they don't melt in the heat and lots of protein and carbs. Oatmeal Cream Pie is legit racing fuel.
Great gentleman 😊
Next year will have to be harder, 👏👏
Is there drug testing for this ultra?
I think we’re seeing exactly what Canadians have to give up for free healthcare, not very free at all.
