I didn’t see where you lay out your expenses. Maybe I missed that. Even cheap housing is expensive today. That’s the biggie. People don’t live near to their jobs to use a bike. A car is the next biggie.

Housing is defined my biggest expense by far. You're right that many people live far from work... but that is a choice. But yeah, housing and transportation is about 50% of the average persons spending. For me, housing is almost 2/3 of my costs
