Gorgeous Scale Jet With 1 Flaw - Arrows MiG-29 64mm

  • The Arrows MiG-29 64mm is actually a fantastic jet once you put a little bit of work into it. Mostly the nozzles, and maybe the nose spring if you want to stiffen it up. But mostly the nozzles. The lack of thrust from the stock nozzles is very underwhelming and super unfortunate. Hopefully we'll see fewer RC jets coming out with obscenely oversized nozzles - it has a very real performance impact, definitely not in a good way. But thankfully it's not hard to mod to fix it - and you'll have a jet that you absolutely love.

    Thanks for your insights John. I have this jet but am waaaay out of the skill set to fly it yet (I simply got it do to it being a real bargain used at $200). Other reviews didn’t seem to go as far as you did in describing its flight nature, so its nice to have a bit more insight on how to get more out of this airframe if and when I come back around to it.
    Whats more, is your insight on the performance of the 64’s with specific nozzles. The parts for my Arrow’s 29 will be going into some scratch builds, so based off your info I might be able to expect far better results in my designs than anticipated!

    • @TwoBrosRC

      We went more in-depth with this vid because it needed to be covered. The lacking thrust is something other reviewers should have mentioned. HobbyZone sent this to us but it wouldn't have been an accurate review if we didn't mention the problems the jet has. While not something you couldn't overcome, they're still issues that needed to be discussed and addressed.
      Also, the roll rate is absolutely abysmal without using the stabilators ala full scale. So definitely use a receiver with 7+ channels for this one. We recommend the AR8360T in the description.
      The jet performs really well with the nozzle upgrade from Kallend - definitely don't try to use those motors without nozzles matching the exhaust diameter. Otherwise it'll just be poor performance again.

  • @johnhutson3917

    For me the nozzle modification was explained very briefly and wasn't clear. Showing the cut-off originals then the the new printed nozzles before fitting would help. Not sure what you meant by gluing the foam from the interior of the old nozzles. I don't have this particular model but am considering a similar modification to my own design EDF jet.

    Can't wait to see the B1 and what you do with yours. I bypassed the stock gyro on mine and have a great setup with a slow movement of elevator up 5% during wing sweep, and it Flys so smooth but haven't tried arrobatics with it yet, but other than that I would rate it at a close 10 out of 10 as long as the setup is right

    • @TwoBrosRC

      It had a troubled development history and the distributor didn't do right by the initial customers. We'll cover that and how it flies, and how we bypassed the stock gyro too - along with running everything to an AR10360T for our own stabilized gyro setup.

      I've heard alot of people have wrecked there B1 flying it on the stock gyro and or trying to figure out how to configure the the setup for it. If you can include a setup for people that would help them out tremendously. The b1 is mor forgiving on the wing sweep compared to the freewing F14 because it has weights in the wings to help with the CG on wing sweep. I have the F14 that I'm still playing with gyro gains because it oscillates bad at full throttle after putting the new 2150 kv motors in it

    Awesome flying, i got one of the preorder units and it didnt have any added weight at least that i could find. i want to get to learn flying with a further aft cg, shall i do any adjustments to the as3x settings?

    • @TwoBrosRC

      This is a good jet to learn to fly a tail heavier setup on - just add a little bit of weight to the rear at a time until the jet balances about 10 to 20mm behind the CG recommendation. Then keep pushing it as you get comfortable and move it back until it's closer to 30mm behind. That should be the true neutral position on this jet.
      AS3X settings should be dialed in and adjusted each time you change the CG.

      @@TwoBrosRC should the gains be increased? im not too familiar on what the different settings cause, couldnt find good tutorials for it either

    • @TwoBrosRC

      Generally they need to be increased at slower speeds and decreased at higher speeds. That's why we use a throttle to the gain channel mix that reduces gains as throttle is increased.

  • @looneytunes47

    As with the Arrows F-15 Eagle with the Twin 64mm EDF,s both these planes are weak on thrust and horrible on batteries...Had they just went with a single 80mm edf in the middle of the fuse and retained the dual nozzles out the back you would gain thrust and get better flying duration....which they shoulda already learned on the F-15 they previously made.

  • @qnoorani

    good find john. i have this jet and it's flown pretty good with 3300s out the box. how did you determine this btw? i wonder what other EDFs are suffering from this. also, is anyone able to print this so that i can purchase since I don't own a 3D printer?

    • @TwoBrosRC

      It (the thrust issue with incorrect nozzle diameter) was extensively discussed on RC Groups. Also, friends of ours have flown it and we've seen it have poor stock performance before flying it ourselves. Other FMS jets like the Rafale 80mm suffer from this same issue.
