  • You've probably seen online cages that're small, oddly shaped, may be a bit questionable on amazon. But why are they considered bad? Today in this review and educational video, I explain why some amazon cages are inappropriate and what people have mentioned when purchasing them in their own amazon reviews. Let's check them out!

      Some people think if a creature is just moving around then they think activity = happiness. They also project their feelings on to the animal "I like this new cage so my animal _must_ love it too!"

      @ArtyCeeCee And to see them defending the whole ‘small cage’ thing by referring to the RSPCA.... but they completely ignore the fact that the RSPCA hamster book *clearly* says that a cage should be 75cm x 40cm lmao (though most people recommended 80cm x 50cm). "Reviewing Rodent Torture Chambers on Amazon."
    How clueless do you have to be to think those cages are big enough? They look cramped. These people ought to imagine a house with the same scaling. Having no gap between your staircase and the exercise bike designed for someone below 4 foot, no banister railing on the stairs, and a bed that isn't big enough to roll over in.
    A hallway that is so small and narrow, you have to army crawl, and you cannot turn around without getting stuck. A basement with such low ceilings, that you have to crouch. Your house being made entirely of glass, whilst living in an area, prone to earthquakes.
    All that, whilst being suffocated with a plastic bag.

    Since I was a little girl, my dream was always to run an animal rescue. I started to rescue and bond guinea pigs when I was sixteen, but only today, several years later, I was able to rescue my first hamster!! I named her Munchie, in honor of you, because watching your videos has shown me that I'm capable of giving her the best life possible. She looked dead in the photos on craigslist. This poor girl came in a cage that was smaller than 1'x6", with a 4.5" wheel inside. She's in a DIY cage tonight, with 9" of bedding, timothy hay, and the newspaper she came on. Sadly, as her case was an emergency in my eyes, her wheel has only been upgraded to a 9" wheel. I splurged and spent $200 on chewy for her. I can't wait to see how her coat changes as she finally has proper nutrition and room to roam. She has terrible mats and the worst teeth I've seen. We'll see her vet at the end of the month!!

    23:06 I know for a fact this is true. I own three hamsters and each one of them are completely different, personality wise. I know they can feel complex emotion as well because my hamster Toph does this chattering sound when he's pissed off. They also recognize people, my hamsters will come up to when during free time and ask for food, but won't with anybody else. Also, if I hand them to somebody new, they'll act differently then when I pick them up. So if anybody who saids that hamsters are simple, they've never been around a hamster before.

I wish we were like the UK and Germany where they have better cages and the bare minimum of floor space is higher. I’ve been trying to get a better cage for my hamster, she currently is in a 110 quart bin, but the best cages available are only sold in the UK. I hope they take down those cages online that are not suitable but unfortunately they will still sell them regardless.

      We may have some better cages but I struggled finding a big enough cage at first. The good thing about America is that you have bigger bins to make cages out of (there’s rarely any that get over 450 let alone 620) that I’ve seen! So really eBay or Second hand sites is where I can find decent sized cages! But I get what you mean and I think all countries can improve the cages we sell!

    People who are having problems with the small ferplast cage are really not very clever. Of course they're too small and yes if I lived in a tiny cage I'd bite my way out. They are a brilliant cage as part of a bigger set up. I use mine as a hamster bedroom or toilet room in combination with a savic hamster heaven. @wolfie ツ Legally there is nothing an animal rescue like this one can actually do. A too small cage is not illegal, neither is housing hamsters together. Proper government agencies do not know proper husbandry. Rescues like this one are using the tools they have (social media) to spread the word.
      They cannot just go and cause some huge change. That’s down to the governments, etc. The only time the SPCA and law can get involved is obvious abuse (torturing animals, etc).
      It’s not as easy as you would think.

    please help me, so i got a female 8 week old syrian hamster 4 days ago and on the first night she came out of bed at around 7 and seemed very comfortable, washing herself in front of me etc and ever since she’s only been coming out at 9-9:30 for about 20 minutes (still seeming comfortable btw) and , then goes back to her hide/bed and comes out again when i am asleep. so i was wondering is this just because she’s young or just settling in or is there a safe way to get her into a sleeping routine cause i want to spend some time with her. thanks 🥰

    how can people be this absolutely oblivious?? how do you look at a wheel that's smaller than your hamster and think it's good?? how do you put your pet in a box they can't even pace around in and think it's great and say they love it?? How do you not know basic pet care before buying a living breathing creature who's life depends on you??? aaahhh

    Hi Munchie! I have got a gerbil who always runs at the edge of the wheel, even though he has enough space to do so easily in the middle of the surface (8 cm of width). In fact, of the three gerbils that I have, the other two run in the middle perfectly fine. This one, though, only wants to run at the edge, and seems as if he would fall anytime, but never does. He even seems to run facing outwards instead of running straight. On top of that, this gerbil poops a lot while running on the wheel, whereas the other two gerbils don't do that. Do you have an explanation for his behaviour? I haven't found any information about it on the internet. Thank you!! I enjoy your videos very much! :)

    Hey I don't know if you could do this but there's a page on Facebook called "Hammpy Hamsters" and would love to get your feedback and thoughts on how they live and there diet please could you do this? I'm very worried that young people will see the bright colours and the cute designs and assume that what those hamsters are getting is appropriate

    My Syrian had all he could ever wish for in his ikea detolf, so many chew toys and a massive wheel, and so much bedding... yet he chewed out of the wooden side whilst I was at hospital and escaped, I glued (non toxic) square piece of glass onto the side where he ate his way out, although he never did it again, I don’t know if he was just an adventurous soul because there wasn’t anything wrong with his behaviour, he was never aggressive or upset, or he just missed me at the hospital!

    • @rockinrootbeer1795
      @rockinrootbeer1795 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are many different 20 gal sized tanks, even long 20 gal tanks (which have the most square inches of surface space) only provides 360 square inches. Watch more of Munchie's videos if you want to know more about proper habitats, she explains the minimum requirements in almost every cage review video.

    • @MunchiesPlace
      @MunchiesPlace  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      20 gal long is 360 sq inches. 20 gal high is 288 sq inches. These are not appropriate for hamsters that need a minimum of 450 sq inches. Try 30 gal breeder for dwarfs, 40 gal breeder for Syrians or try 110qt sterilite bin cage for dwarf and 200qt sterilite bin cage for syrians. Detolf DIY enclosure and Niteangel bigger world are appropriate for dwarfs and syrians. Offerup/FB Market/CL sell used tanks or enclosures. I'd sugges starting there. Wire enclosure suitable for dwarfs are the Mickey XL Cage and the Hamster Haven cage from Savic. Savic Hamster Plaza and Prevue 528 are more suitable for Syrians.

    As a quick note, you often talk about "plummeting", implying it will hurt a Hamster. Although they rarely enjoy it, falling becomes less dangerous as animals get smaller, those under 1kg are almost immune to being harmed by falling, assuming they don't fall onto anything sharp. NOT that I'm encouraging these terrible cages.
